AtariDump ,

This is great (seriously).

What remains to be seen is how long it takes between announcement and update of Matter devices.

AtariDump ,

Is that George Michael from Arrested Development?

AtariDump ,

If I watch it once and might want to see it again, I download it.

This was if it gets censored or removed I have a copy.

AtariDump ,

If you’re steaming on your local network you should be able to disable transcoding on your clients.

AtariDump , (edited )

Everyone knows you need to harvest it from smoke detectors like the Nuclear Eagle Boy Scout did.

AtariDump ,

Go RAID 6 and save some disks for backups.

AtariDump ,

Sad that he died in 2016.

AtariDump ,

The easiest and cheapest solution is don’t allow transcoding.

The easiest way to do that is separate your 720/1080p videos from your 4k videos. Limit 4k access to the users that can play 4k

AtariDump ,

People talk about the cost of storage space but neglect the cost of electricity to constantly transcode video files. And it’s not like the output is saved for the next time; you need to do it every time.

Plus, I’d bet most people sit too far from their TV to be able to see the actual different between 1080p and 4k.

HDR? Sure. But 4k? Doubtful.

I keep two libraries - one that’s 720/1080p and a second that’s 4k only. My 4k content is severely limited to only things I REALLY want in 4k.

AtariDump ,

You can, but I’d venture a guess most people don’t.

AtariDump ,

Why?

AtariDump ,

I’ll ask the questions I ask Jellyfin users that, if they’re all (or mostly) yes will get me (and a lot of other people) to switch:

Does Jellyfin have:

Music filtering/smart playlists?
Sonic analysis of music to generate smart playlists?
Good 4k/x265 performance?
A third party (or built in) utility that shows me streaming usage per person? (Think Tautulli)
Allows me to limit remote users to streaming from a single IP address at a time?
Let’s me watch something together with another remote user?
Has an app for most any device (like Plex or Emby) that does NOT require sideloading?
Has built in native DVR steaming/recording support?
Two factor authentication?
Doesn’t default new clients to 720p for remote streaming?
Easy login of other devices by entering in a randomly generated four character code?

AtariDump ,

Server OS?

Whatever one you’re most comfortable with.

Client OS?

There’s a lot of different factors for this one.

AtariDump ,

What problem are you trying to solve?

https://xyproblem.info/

AtariDump ,

What CPU do you have?

I’ve run Jellyfin without transcoding from a raspberry pi for 2-3 streams without stuttering.

AtariDump ,

That will happen, yes, but the bigger question then is what’s wrong with the video file.

AtariDump ,

There was a teacher who did that; anyone whose plant grew failed.

AtariDump , (edited )

AppleTV

Roku

Firestick

Édit: Downvoted for a legitimate answer? This is why people don’t want to post/help when people ask questions.

AtariDump , (edited )

So what box do you think exists that will play protected and non-protected content with a 10ft interface?

Only thing left I can think of is the Nvidia shield.

Edit: Downvotes but no responses. Very telling.

AtariDump ,

Thank you.

AtariDump ,

Block it sooner than later; the older they get the more they run like crap.

AtariDump ,

Bumble was unique because everyone on the dating apps is a bot except you.

AtariDump , (edited )

If all you’re looking to do is setup a Jellyfin server that won’t do any transcoding, you could very easily use a raspberry pi with an external Hard Drive.

https://xyproblem.info/

AtariDump , (edited )

Pretty much, so long as your clients support the bitrate and resolution. (As others have said) see below

AtariDump ,

So, not officially.

Which would be enough for me to not use an officially unsupported OS.

AtariDump ,

Agreed

AtariDump ,

Hey, it happens. That’s why it’s great to be able to ask others for suggestions :)

AtariDump ,

Why is it a bad idea?

What the breakdown of cost of Pi (and accessories) vs mini pc? What’s the power consumption breakdown?

I’m certainly not say it has to be a Pi; I’m trying to point out that a Pi could host a Jellyfin server without transcoding.

AtariDump ,

How much does it cost in power to run the Pi? The computer?

I’ve got a Pi3B running Plex and, with one stream and no transcoding, there is no choppiness to any video.

AtariDump ,

You should have two PiHoles.

AtariDump ,

You only set one DHCP server. DHCP hands out both PiHoles as DNS servers on the network.

Name resolution is handled by DNS and not DHCP.

AtariDump ,

…if the query times out, try the next, until out of name servers, then repeat trying all the name servers until a maximum number of retries are
made.)

Queries are going to time out and fall over to the other DNS server.

AtariDump ,
