The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a substitute and that’s a problem?

Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the .

That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.

Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?

IDK if we're really missing any software features, but I feel like it's a good opportunity for a Lemmy plugin

Especially with Lemmy getting support for plugins soon, I don't see the need for making a new platform

A new sorting method for "unanswered" is a cool idea. I'm not sure if it's quite as simple as just finding posts with 0 comments, because people can put additional questions in the comments but it's still unanswered. Also how do you sort them for posts with the same number of comments/answers. But this is definitely something that a plugin could handle.

I saw someone else suggested we could just put "[unanswered]" in the title and then edit the title to "[answered]"

Or use Cloudflare (properly)

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Then they aren't using it properly

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

tl;dr: apps should login with the username die4ever@programming.dev similar to email, instead of choosing instance programming.dev and then typing in die4ever for username separately

yea that probably would be simpler, I'm sure some apps already do this

It's there now, the crawler found you. Congrats!

Plugins for fediverse platforms.

Where is this up to? Is anyone thinking along these lines?

I've seen @db0 espouse such (eg https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/8581651) (sorry for the tag if annoying).

I've certainly thought of it myself ... because it's a pretty obvious idea for an ecosystem aiming for richness and sustainability.

Seems a perfect fit for reusable moderation tooling too, rather than each new platforms having that trouble.

This is essentially 's idea it seems.

When it comes to moderation tooling I'm honestly a little confused that there isn't more work or noise around a developing a sideloaded tool.

Yeah we just need volunteers to dedicate their time to it. But it's a lot easier to complain than it is to contribute.

Yeah it's like trying to delete a torrent that you created lol, deleting stuff from the Internet is not so easy. Even websites that claim to allow you to delete stuff may still be backed up by The Wayback Machine or similar, or even just a random user who liked your post and downloaded it.

I would like improvements here, but you should probably still be careful about anything you post if you're worried about being able to delete it, no matter what site you're on.

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

You're framing it as if this is a bad thing that Lemmy can only see some of the agupe content, but wait until you see how much content non federated platforms can see from each other! I really don't see how some content is worse than none, if you really want all of it then make an account over there like every other social network in the past requires you to browse on their site/app. It'll probably improve over time but it really sounds like you're upset that it already sometimes works instead of not at all.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

use Kbin's search and search for @community_name@server, it's the same as Lemmy except you use an @ sign at the front instead of an ! sign

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Defederation messes with this though, we need more ways to control the content without relying on defederation

It makes me feel like I should be making the post to multiple communities, but then I feel like I'm spamming

This stuff is funny, but that's the problem, Redditors love funny events like The Snap, and they love drama and controversy

You can see it's not hurting Reddit at all maybe even helping them

https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/

The real solution is to share links to Lemmy communities as replacements and just leave Reddit, turn off whatever auto moderation tools they have and just let the place burn, or maybe even worse be overly strict on moderation lol
