A pedestrian being hit by a small car or big car is likely ruined either way.

Vehicle size actually has a huge effect on the severity of vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

I find that full-size SUVs and pickup trucks pose a particular danger for pedestrians.
A pedestrian hit by a full-size SUV is twice as likely to die than a pedestrian hit by
a car under similar circumstances, while being hit by a pickup truck rather than a
car increases the death probability by 68%. I find that high-front-end vehicle designs
are particularly culpable for the higher pedestrian death rate attributable to large
vehicles. A 10 cm increase in the front-end height of a vehicle increases the risk of
pedestrian death by 22%.

Best Buy Membership "discount" (lemmy.world)

So I was shopping with my wife today and I said "oh let's see if my membership helps out." So we went and added the same item to each of our carts, and to our surprise, the total was the same! So what is it exactly that I'm paying for in this membership if the items "original price" is higher for me than it is for regular...

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

This is about trackers as in devices which can geolocate, such as Apple's airtags, not privacy-invading data collection in apps. Google obviously wouldn't care to address the latter.

The worse part is, what infrastructure does get built isn't used because it's mostly useless, and people use this lack of use as justification for not building more.

There's so much missing history in early tech. This article reminds me of Ahoy's video on YouTube about the first video game.

Sure all privately-owned cars are problematic, but I think it's ridiculous to suggest that small vehicles have the same impact as massive SUVs/trucks.

Bigger cars are not only more damaging in crashes with pedestrians/cyclists (which you've mentioned but seem to think is unimportant?!) but they also cause more accidents because of poor visibility and longer stopping distances. Also, environmentally-speaking, larger vehicles have a much bigger impact than small cars. Not only are they less fuel-efficient, they also cause more damage to roads leading to more frequent need for repairs.

I agree that ultimately reducing the total number of privately-owned vehicles should be the main goal, but we can also simultaneously strive for smaller cars for the vehicles that are on our roads.

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah fuck all cars, you're definitely preaching to the choir there, but if we could get rid of them I'd start with the huge trucks and SUVs first. Your points all remain valid without equating all cars.

Like I truly wish everyone were vegan, but if someone's gonna eat meat I'd rather they eat a chicken stir-fry than an EpicMealTime-type monstrosity.

Same with cars, I wish everyone would drop this inefficient, antisocial method of transportation, but I'd also rather someone drive a Prius than a Hummer.

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

you can't transition away from just large cars, you still won't have the carless infrastructure in place anyway

I don't disagree with this, but that's not the point I was trying to make. Maybe I wasn't clear enough, since your paragraph re:veganism addresses an entire other issue than the one I was trying to highlight.

Let me clarify: Vegans, like anti-car folks, are politically extreme compared to the mainstream views. As a vegan, in my ideal world no one would eat meat. Similarly, in my ideal world no one would drive cars. However, we don't live in my ideal worlds (far from it).

I don't condone eating meat, nor do I condone driving cars. But for most people, these are normal, everyday things and they get defensive if they feel attacked for doing them.

As an anti-car person, you probably have more in common ideologically with a Prius driver than a Hummer driver. Equating the Prius driver with the Hummer driver is, in my experience, more likely to generate a negative reaction in the Prius driver where they see you as an enemy, and the Hummer as an ally.

I'd rather create more anti-car sentiment than accidentally contribute to motor vehicle solidarity.

Evkob ,

Using pre-transition pictures of someone for a dumb meme is honestly pretty inconsiderate.

If you truly want to write code from scratch, you first need to create the universe.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

That's a fair criticism, but I wouldn't recommend Windows as a daily driver to 95% of people either. If you like/care/know about computers, use Linux, otherwise I'd recommend MacOS over Windows (unless said person uses their computer for gaming, in which case Windows'll give you the least hassle)

Evkob ,

Evkob ,

I would describe myself as firmly "in the middle", and I honestly don't disagree with your points overall. However, I think Windows isn't really "easier to use" than most Linux distros, it's just what most people are used to.

That doesn't take away from your argument, as being familiar with an OS will make it easier to use and that's completely valid, but someone who's used Linux all their life would similarly face struggles using Windows. User inertia is a huge factor contributing to Windows' marketshare.

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I'm also a motorcyclist (hold the motor) and my experience is very similar to yours.

I almost got hit a few weeks back by a car driver trying to turn right on red whilst on a fucking Facetime call, with the phone held up right in front of their face. If I hadn't been in a rush I would have let them have an earful.

Like, please don't ever use your phone while driving, but if you absolutely have to be a despicable human being, can you at least look away from the screen when navigating through intersections??

Evkob ,

Everyone says this kind of stuff about any and every social issue. It drives me insane, do people not realize that it's a self-fulfilling prophecy? If everyone I heard say "there's no point fighting it" got together and fought it, they'd easily win.

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I appreciate you calling out the use of the term "normie". Communities that frequently use such terms always end up with an unhealthy "us vs them" mentality.

Like I'm not surprised people don't react well to someone bringing up privacy issues if said person starts the conversation with the mentality of "how do I enlighten this normie?"

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Another point: for equivalent models. Car manufacturers over the past two decades have been dropping the more affordable sedans and such from their lineups, favouring their more expensive SUVs.

I didn't have a phone until I was 16 despite most of my peers getting one around 12/13. I didn't get bullied for not having a phone, in fact no one really made any comments on it other than an occasional "wow, I couldn't live without my phone!"

Granted, this was over ten years ago, and was probably the first generation of teenagers where cell phones were near-ubiquitous. I don't know if kids nowadays would get bullied just for not having a phone, but it would severely limit their social interactions. Riding your bike and knocking at your friends' doors randomly, or going to the mall and expecting you'll find some people you know there, these are from a bygone era.

I type things in for her because she’s a really bad typist, but she tells me what to write…

At the risk of being that asshole who tells a parent how to raise their child based off a single post online, how do you expect her to become a better typist if you do it for her? She's 13, she's probably not gonna be that good at anything, she's at the age where she's supposed to be learning things (and that includes skills like typing).

Maybe I'm just projecting my own parents' shortcomings onto you, but they often just did things for me instead of helping me learn. I think I would be a better, more well-rounded human today if they had pushed me to be a bit more independent. I'm sure you're doing this out of love for your daughter, but I think you might not be doing her any favours by doing a portion of the work yourself. If she decides to pursue post-secondary education, are you still going to type her essays for her? What about if she gets a job that involves typing?

Self hosted open source simultaneous multiuser password safe with .deb or .rpm and an end user webui/android app

I'm looking into different self hosted open source multiuser password safes and while there are many options I haven't found one with a .deb or .rpm install - only a whole bunch of docker compose....

Evkob ,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

A quick search led me to Passbolt which has multiple user support, native installs for both Debian and Fedora (you'll need to add their repo manually, though) and an Android app, so it seems to fit all your criteria.

Just curious, are there any specific reasons you wish to avoid docker?

ACTUAL IMPORTANT ADDITION:

Okay, in saying the following, I recognize that this is going to sound pretty "out there", especially if you're someone who is younger on the internet.

And I will preface what I am about to say with some credentials: I am an Internet Old. I am also someone who is paid professionally to work in the horror genre from time to time. I am also someone who has studied psychology, as well as studying some NLP-type shit (that I do not find ethical in the slightest, as an aside, and I quickly noped out of)...

I also want to let you know upfront that what I will tell you is NOT to make you worry or feel afraid. I am sharing this info only so that you can "see through the curtain" as it were, and recognize media and stories like this for what it actually is.

The tl;dr is - please be very criticial of any online horror story that does not provide a sense of catharsis or release at the end, or at the very least a sense of closure or ending. Or anything that is about someone giving up control.

Why? Because creepypasta stories like this may seem merely surreal and/or hilarious to you, but shit like this is actually subliminally priming you to be more easily manipulated and controlled.

And a lot of these types of stories are absolutely aimed at teens and pre-teens, or college kids, fyi. There is also a really good video by Ann Reardon about of stories being told over brightly coloured baking videos. Mostly though, these stories are about and aimed at WOMEN.

Basically, this story is linking a fear response (a sewer man! - that sounds bad and weird at first) with a violent action - or a taking away of rights/possessions (the coffee that gets poured in the sewer) that comes from someone with power (the soldier) who is "solving a problem" (thinking rationally - how would coffee dumped in the sewer fucking help anyone?!?!) where the victim (the woman) is shown how the solider is "right" to do what he did.

The subliminal lesson here is that the solider does what he wants to do, because "he knows better" than the civilian girl. This story basically ends on the action of "the soldier did the right thing" and there is no real catharsis or sense of ending. You know, the kind of message that implies "be scared, rely on those in power". The idea that we should just comply.

And, as a thought exercise: the story would be so, so much different if it were a sweet little old lady that took the coffee. The initial scare/weirdness factor could still be there, but it wouldn't have that same 'heaviness' feeling to it, you know?

Please just think smartly about media, okay?

Anyone who thinks spending 44 billion dollars on shutting up a teenager constitutes a "genius plan" is already fully on-board the Musk cult. I don't think there's really much reinforcement happening.

I agree we shouldn't pretend he's anything less than a dumb asshole who got caught with his pants down.

I really don't understand why people always specify foreign investment. What difference does it make to me as a tenant if my slumlord has their Canadian citizenship or not?

Housing shouldn't be an investment at all, regardless of the would-be investors' nationality.

I am too dumb brain for programming :(

I've tried a few times in the past to get into it but I just get overwhelmed. I'm frankly amazed by and so thankful for all the programmers who contribute to all of the great libre software I use. I am stuck at the level of knowing more about computers than essentially everyone I know or encounter, while simultaneously being a complete and utter noob to anyone who actually understands computing. I just know how to use search engines and follow instructions written by people smarter than me.

Personally I feel like if you have to ask, I'd lean towards caution and not sending it. I mean, best case she gets a chuckle out of it, worse case it kinda creeps her out.

If you're unambiguously an ally and she has seen proof of/knows this, most trans people I know would be fine with it. I'm not sure the risk/reward is worth it though (and tbh I'd say the same for sending memes to any coworkers one's not on more familiar terms with)
