I run arch and use the KDE beta package repo. Literally no problems. No idea what everyone is talking about here.

This. Fahrenheit is by far the better temperature scale for talking about environmental temps

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

TV weather people saying that the temp will be in the 80s is less useful to me than if they tell me if it will be 27°C for example

Well this isn't really an accurate comparison. If they know an exact temperature, they would say it in both measurements. But they don't. So "in the 80s" is the perfect range. Preparing for 80 degrees is almost identical to how you would prepare for 89 degrees. There's no metric equivalent. The "20s" is way too big of a range. 20 vs 29 is a huge difference. Also, with it being base 10, you don't really need more information. 80 is 80% hot. Think of the hottest weather you've been in. 80 degrees is about 80% of that. And before you say "I've been in 115 degree weather". Yeah, so have I, I lived in arizona, and 115 is honestly not too much different than 100. After 100 it doesn't matter much. Same with below 0. But the 0-100 range, each degree matters quite a bit

What freedom do you have that you think this is infringing on?

You really don't see the answer to this or are you just being intentionally ignorant. Would you feel the same way if the government banned lemmy?

Fal ,

Did you just not question my post or are you just intentionally not answering it?

The arch wiki is the gold standard for Linux, not just arch. But it definitely talks specifically about arch.

So, there are built in install scripts now. There's no GUI installer, but it's 1 command to get a full arch setup installed with a desktop environment. Arch is a 100% reasonable choice for a new user.

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Steam is not in the AUR. Arch's main repos have way more than Ubuntu and Debian. And then the aur is a better alternative to installing from source or doing other hacks

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

I haven't had an arch update break shit in almost a decade.

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Arch has an installer script now. It's literally 1 command and you get a fully working system

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

This means, that there isn’t that much testing before the release. This can cause lots of problems for the end user.

Lol you're buying into the FUD. ubuntu doesn't test every possible combination of packages, nor do they test how updates actually impact the user. Generally updates are always good for users. They fix bugs. 99% of the time someone comes to a linux forum asking about an issue, the answer is "this was fixed in the latest kernel, try updating". But because they're using distros that use ancient, 3 year old kernels, they can't.

Unless you have a staging computer where you stage your updates, you're living in an illusion about "stability", and using ancient tools with ancient bugs for no reason

Rofl they named it "Arya"? How utterly mask-off can you get? That's not even a dog whistle. That's a swastika tattoo on your forehead

Wtf? No. What relevance does theranos have to this company? Does the interviewer ask the same thing to any other bio tech CEO?

Headlines aren't supposed to be deep cuts to geeksquad lingo that's only explained in the body.

I remember software etc. They had a big event for the dreamcast being released. 9/9/99. I wore that free shirt with the date that I got there from playing sonic adventure for like 15 years

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

I'm always doing this when I have to use gnome and it does nothing. So annoying

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

I have to if I want to use linux at work =[ I agree, I hate it

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Linux support is brand new and they want a small subset of things that they can be sure are compliant =[

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Yeah I can install whatever I want, I do have root, we just have an agent that checks certain things before allowing VPN access.

So I do have konsole and Kate installed, but yakuake doesn't work very well with gnome and I need my drop down terminal

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Yeah I use guake, but it doesn't have the Ctrl shift k that I miss that was the point of this thread =D

Also kde is way better about this than gnome. Especially kde 6.

Discord is blurry because it's an electron app, and electron isn't native Wayland. You can make it work with --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Nothing to do with the hardware. It's the lack of fractional scaling support and not knowing the workarounds

For a minute I thought this was an ecco the dolphin deep cut

Cisco now supports developers running Linux feiw

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

For anyone reading this, please don't follow this advice. It's terrible and basically security through obscurity

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

You know just enough to do it the wrong way apparently

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Sitting on a chair that you can't put your feet on the ground is extremely uncomfortable. Even if they have a bar to put them on at the base, it's still a very awkward position

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Using a distro that isn't a rolling release for a desktop is absolutely stupid

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Anything to jerk off the CCP, right? And I'll bet they don't even pay you.

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Gnome is awful. It's almost as bad as windows. Basically 0 customization, and getting worse every release. I can't even fathom how you would voluntarily switch from plasma to gnome and not immediately switch back

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Literally every distro has dolphin in the repos

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Don't use gnome especially with Wayland. Plasma > 5.27 has awesome Wayland integration. Try fedora tumbleweed

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

It's not automatically installed on gnome, because gnome sucks. But any KDE distro will have it, and any distro ever will have it in the repos

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

I’m not even saying you should give it another shot, but please just don’t act like your personal preferences are objectively accurate.

I'm forced to use it at work if I want to use linux. You really can't, and to customize even a little bit you need lots of extra tools and maybe even access the css. For example, https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1160/dash-to-panel/ is the only way to get a usable task bar. And calling it usable is being very generous.

The gnome devs are extremely opinionated in removing configuration and features. It's honestly disgusting

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

KDE is amazing and you should give it a try. It's unbelievably customizable, and is so much more seamless. Having to use gnome is almost as frustrating as having to use macos. And in a lot of the same ways. Like, trying to get a usable task bar in gnome is infuriating.

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

I'm forced to use gnome at work. It's horrible

Posted a response to another person, but I think it's identifying her as trans that's my biggest hesitation; I almost guarantee she would appreciate the meme. I probably should have been more explicit in my question, but I don't how personal it is for people to be identified as trans even in a neutral/positive context.

Fal ,
@Fal@yiffit.net avatar

Personally I feel like if you have to ask, I’d lean towards caution and not sending it.

That's exactly why I don't plan to =].

most trans people I know would be fine with it

I should have been more explicit with my question, as that's kind of what I was getting at. If most trans people are comfortable being identified as trans even if it's in a neutral/positive context
