HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

I work at in a place that has 1000s of these piece of shit probooks. There is so much marketing about environmentalism yet these laptops are e-waste after 4 years if they even last that long. No one repairs any thing.

It would be very very bad for world if the folks at Kaspersky turned to black hat activity

What is it that makes Adobe so sort after? It seems that most people just use the basic tools.

Ah that means Adobe truly has us by the balls.

Its embarrassing that people are downvoting a post providing context. They're acting like you are here defending the cyber truck.

I do this when eating food I don't like and I used to be a very fussy eater. I was at my friends house and she cooked food and I was forcing it down to be polite and she asked if I liked the food. I said yeah its really good and she burst out laughing because apparently my face looked like I was eating a war head. She said I can tell when you don't like something because you always scrunch your face. Apparently I used to do it in conversations as well.

Doesn't the US mine a lot of its own cobalt. If this is being caused by a boom in demand its probably from Chinese electric vehicle demand.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Oh my bad. I was completely wrong about America producing cobalt locally. It does seem they import most from Africa.

I did get figures that support my statement that most of the demand is driven by China. I checked through 2021, 2022 and 2023 and China is a large majority of the demand and demand increase. America makes up less than 10% of global ev sales and their demand is not "booming" when compared with the Chinese ev demand increases.

Here's a paragraph that outlines what I'm saying. Ev now accounts for almost half of all cobalt demand and is increasing year on year.

the passenger segment accounted for 87% of EV demand in 2023 and is the largest demand
driver over the forecast period. Global passenger EV sales rose to 13.8 million
units in 2023, up 33% y/y – a fall from 58% y/y growth in 2022. Of this, China (7.9 million), EU
(3.5 million) and the US (1.4 million) accounted for 93% of sales. - cobalt institute market report 2023.

@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

It doesn't matter because China will get to that level soon. They're progressing very rapidly through a booming research and espionage sector

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

My bad. I swear I had seen articles saying Chinese cpus were catching up. I went back and looked at those articles and the articles basically provide 0 evidence or benchmarks so you're probably right that there is a significant gap that isn't likely to close anytime soon.

The alternative is the guy gets no coconut and has nothing to do.

Israel using Meta's WhatsApp to kill Palestinians in Gaza through AI system (www.middleeastmonitor.com)

According to software engineer and blogger, Paul Biggar, however, one key detail on the methods employed by the Lavender system that is often overlooked is the involvement of the messaging platform, WhatsApp. A major determining factor of the system’s identification is simply if an individual is in a WhatsApp group containing...

They really don't provide enough to back up the insane claims they're making. I would take all this with a massive grain of salt as it's most likely bullshit wartime propaganda designed to stir people up.

Fizz ,

Makes sense. There is no way you let a foreign adversary control an app that serves 100m of your citizens emotionally charged shortform content.

That would similar to the ccp owning every major American news network combined.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Im curious if you think it would be OK for ccp to own to own CNN and fox news and control broadcasting for hundreds of millions of Americans.

Fizz ,

I never said the us was any better. im very aware of the us influence on the internet. But there is a big difference between the us and China and say the us and britan or the us and (any small country that isn't allied with the us but is to small to go independent).

Adversarial nations that are big enough to break free of FAANG company already have. Russia and China do not what the us dominating their social media landscapes. Why would the us allow China to dominates its social media landscape when they can ban it and supplement it with companies that are within their governments arms reach.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

If I was American or the American government I would be.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

It is creepy on a personal level. But it makes sense for an influential nation like America to own their own media. From a national security point it makes sense because American corporations have to comply with the American government. This also extends to America's allies who also operate in the space by as much smaller players.

Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract (www.nbcnews.com)

"Google issued a stern warning to its employees, with the company’s vice president of global security, Chris Rackow, saying, “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again,” according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC."

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Is it not perfectly fine to fire people who think it's OK to come into an office and disrupt work for 9 hours and force law enforcement to be called. I can't think of a single place that wouldn't sack me on the spot for doing that.

I'm not fully aware of us protest laws but i was under the impression to protest you had to do it on public property. Seems like this is blown out of proportion because the writer agrees with the cause.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Would a union be able to do this? I feel like a union doing this would be just as bad but Google might hesitate to fire them due to union backlash.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

I am pretty sure they could sue for wrongful termination if they conducted their protest properly and respectfully. You can't fire someone for exercising a right.

When I read they they were losing money per search I immediately thought of speedy Pete's search engine. Which was probably British guy in his shed who would return you your search results because the search engine only worked for a few hours a day and took 3-10mins to get a single result.

Tarallo - selfhostable FOSS Trello alternative (feddit.it)

Hi! For the ones of you that use Trello, I made a simple to use and host alternative in PHP. It's not a complete alternative like other projects, and I mainly made it to be able to host it on free PHP web servers while having control over data/attachments. It also support a basic importer for Trello JSON exports....

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Actually a pretty cool project. Its smooth and works exactly how i would expect. Hopefully some companies use it and contribute money or code so you can keep improving it.

I was suprised to see a headline of 6k people fired over 4 years being called significant and then realised the only reason this article exists is because it's Twitter staff being fired and this journalist is obsessed with Twitter and thinks every person there is a special soul who should be indefinitely employed.

Elon specifically said he was going to reduce the size of Twitter. Firing 6k people is not a surprise nor is it negative news. The "job creator" in quotes probably refers to the 200k+ people employed across his 5 companies.

The focus should be on firing employees for trying to unionized because that's the only egregious part.

I'm pretty sure that a large company like Amazon has destroyed far more jobs than created. Because of the efficiency of their operation

I can see why this guy got a letter from from Ted. His idea of the internet fully replicating a human world I think would cause so much psychological damage to humanity. As if we aren't lonely and Isolated enough this guy wants to give us less reason to leave the house.

Android users who have a keen eye for design and detail, how is the whole stutter/lag situation? Esp. after a few years of use?

I haven't used an Android device since my last one, the Galaxy S8. Beautiful hardware, beautiful design, but it was plagued with animation stutters and dropped frames. I switched to an iPhone and an iPad around 6 years ago. And the animations were buttersmooth. It was almost unthinkable to achieve such a fluid interface on any...

Fizz ,

I've got an older s10 and the animations are smooth 99% of the time then I'll see a stutter when I'm loading something like a heavy webpage and scrolling.
