I’m ok with promoted spots in a store, but in the core OS UI, fuck that.

This Telsa owner sounds like the BBQ Becky of EVs.

Free stuff is great and all, but I imagine they’re using a stolen CC to pay for those subscriptions and they’re exploiting someone who’s not great at paying attention to their credit card bill.

You may want to report it so that someone isn’t getting fucked over.

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s probably using a stolen CC. I wouldn’t feel too great about using someone else’s credit card without their knowledge. I’d report it and try to get the card suspended.

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

They will boot your account if you contact CS and say “my account has been compromised?”

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but they don’t have contemporary best practices in place that would’ve reduced their exposure to this.

Ghostalmedia OP ,

I feel like Jellyfin is a better solution than something like Plex, but I still feel like there is a trade off. I’m not dealing with ads, accounts, and content appearing / disappearing. But I was the TV and media library’s sys admin in the house, and that came with a different set of inconveniences.

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

That's absolutely correct, and something to keep in mind in case you're already stressed out with work or lacking free time

Exactly. I’m exchanging some amount of money and time in order to watch stuff on my TV and phone. These days I’m exchanging a bit more money because I have less time.

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. Having been on the CS side of the house for stuff like this, I can’t imagine they would penalize the customer for coming forward. Customer service ain’t got time for that. They’re going to remove the card, reset the password, and maybe report the card.

Taking money from someone else’s bank account is a shitty thing to do. I don’t know why anyone here would be in support of not reporting this.

God I hate global protect. That product is not performant at all.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Last company worked for was using OpenVPN. It wasn’t great, but I would gladly take it over Global Protect.

I see a couple free projects on GitHub.

It’s only $99 if you want to submit to the App Store. Xcode is free and you can use it to compile FOSS apps and side load.

Ghostalmedia ,

We’ll see. I’d like to read the latest text, and I can’t seem to find it.

A lot of red and blue states have data privacy laws that are in the same wheal house as the OG’s - GDPR and CCPA.

I work in data privacy, and architecting systems that comply with multiple laws is a giant pain in the ass. Most of us that work in the space have wanted to unify a lot of these guardrails under one law. Currently, I basically get product requirements from multiple different state who are not taking to each other. It’s miserable.

That said, my big concern is that a federal law won’t be easy to make quick iterations to. Congress is slow as fuck. The US probably wouldn’t have any data privacy stuff in place if it weren’t for the states moving the ball forward. The states can move much much faster.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Anyone have the text?

To be fair, almost all companies that do interstate business have had to comply with California’s laws - CCPA, CPRA, etc.

I get why it would be a low legislative priority. It’s a lot of work for something large and midsize businesses are already forced to do.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Roku, the company that’s literally puts streaming service ads on your remotes.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve always found their monetization strategy icky. Their remotes, with streaming service ads on them, always made me feel gross. Especially since those services change every couple years, and you get stuck with remotes plugging stupid services like Blockbuster and Redbox.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Roku has always been a shitty company that wants to monetize everything. People are finally waking up. How many of us have a Roku remote that advertises a useless or bankrupt streaming service?

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Get a CEC TV and a separate streaming box that supports that. Get a Shield and install an ad free launcher, or pick up an AppleTV.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I do miss being able to quickly type a code to jump to a known broadcaster. Opening up a menu is slower than jumping direct to said thing.

The Roku buttons solves that a little bit, but there is only 4, you can’t change them, and they prioritize featuring whoever pays up.

Anyone have a recommendation for a small color laser printer? Like shoebox size.

My place is pretty small, and I don’t have much desk or shelf space. It doesn’t make sense for me to waste desk space on something that I use 1-3 times a year.

I’ve been using one of these tiny HPs. The ink is a fucking racket, and I’d love a laser alternative. This size is great. I can fold the trays and throw it in a drawer. It’s only 16 x 5.5 x 7in.

Edit: Found one. It the HP LaserJet Pro M15w

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I use it a lot for construction. Printed job specs are much easier / faster to deal with than a computer on a job site. You can staple them to a wall, quickly draw on them, use them when your hands are filthy, have multiple large copies floating around, etc. Paper is usually just a better solution for that environment.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Bummer. I really want to ditch this ink jet because of ink costs. I

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Convenience. I can’t print when the library is closed, I need to travel over there, if need to print another revision, I need to travel back.

Ideally like the convenience, but I don’t want to deal with HPs shitty ink sponges that instantly dry out. I’d like something that lasts.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

That’s kind of cool. Unfortunately, it’s still ink jet tanks. I’d like a laser.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Weird thumbnail. Why is the printer pixelated, but the logo is super crisp?

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. I’m just wondering if something like the tiny ink jets exists for laser printing. I could get a slightly bigger printer, but if I can get a similar size or smaller, I would prefer that.

Looks like I just found one. The HP LaserJet Pro M15w is about the same form factor as my inkjet. Problem is that is BW only, and an HP.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had some commercial HP units. “Fine” is debatable. ;)

Although they were a fine source of revenue for maintenance techs.

One is a watch. The other is an expensive piece of jewelry that is also a watch.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, if you want to get super Vulcan about it. But people have emotions, can appreciate craft, can appreciate nature, and like to express themselves.

Granted, the person that buys a $100k watch is usually trying to express “I have money.”
So fuck that person. But on the flip side, you have things like the necklace my wife wears, which contains a coin that reminds her of her mom, and was made by a local skilled craftsperson that makes really interesting stuff.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with rocking something that is sentimental and expresses that you value good craft.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I wish. My company and my wife’s company use teams, and we fucking hate it.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

It’s buggy, the call quality is shit, and it lacks some major Slack and Zoom features.

Specifically, channels, organizing / grouping chats, threads, etc. Not having that hurts.

That said, it does archive video chats in a thread that people can comment on. That’s cool. But that’s the only cool thing Teams does.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Complaining about Slack is like complaining about Jira. Jira sucks, and I hate it, but every time I get forced to try the alternatives, I’m even grumpier.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Zoom. The video, audio, and stability are all much much better than Teams.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I do a lot of interviewing and often encounter moments where we jump from Team to Zoom, or vice versa, and everyone gets a side by side of call quality. This usually happens when a candidate hasn’t used one of the products before and they are struggling to enable screen sharing permissions, so instead of wasting time, I jump us to the other product.

Everyone always makes an unprompted comment about how much worse Team’s quality is. It’s really noticeable when you put them side by side. Feels like placing an old CRT TV next to an OLED.

The amount of Yanko Design spam in my feed was driving me nuts.
