I’m from space!

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I tried artifact for a bit, and the blog spam was so bad. Stuff would get promoted that would’ve never made it out of new on Reddit or Lemmy

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

So a failing company is buying a failed new aggregator? How does Yahoo benefit from this?

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I was not wondering that. But thanks anyway.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Is this really a problem for Lemmy though? Threads content isn’t going to show up here because threads doesn’t have communities, and Lemmy doesn’t allow you to follow people.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, my point remains. Even if a Lemmy instance is federated with masto or threads, the content does not appear here on Lemmy right now. It’s physically impossible. Lemmy literally has no code written to support self posts and to follow users.

For example, here is NPR’s masto account viewed through Lemmy.world. You get their name, avatar, banner, and bio….but zero content.

https://lemmy.world/u/NPR@mstdn.social

Until lemmy decides to copy Reddit’s user pages, this isn’t a problem. Federate, defederate - makes now difference for lemmy right now.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Every time something like this gets posted, there are always Lemmy users crying to defederate their Lemmy instances.

But remember, the current concern is with Mastodon, NOT Lemmy. Lemmy can’t actually view the post types that Masto and Threads make. Wendy’s can post all the Threads ads they want - we’re not going to see them here. We can’t. That hasn’t been built.

Try it. Go view someone’s Mastodon account in Lemmy. You don’t see their posts.

IMHO, over the decades, if you asked America’s Dems why they wanted to give aid to Israel, you’d likely hear that they wanted to help Jewish people to defend themselves, not that they wanted to help Israel attack its neighbors.

Now that Israel is aggressively on the offense, in a way not seen in decades, the Dems have to turn the cruise ship around so people don’t assume not aiding an offensive action ≠ supporting antisemitism.

Half of my family is Jewish-American, and it’s taken a few months for them to come around and understand that not supporting offensive action ≠ antisemitism. After WW2, and years of experiencing antisemitism, their shields are up. They immediately start to worry when people start aggressively scrutinizing a Jewish community, because that has usually been a precursor to some pretty bad shit.

I kind of get why Biden has felt the need to slow walk this. The history has made this a complex and nuanced thing.

Unfortunately, moving slow isn’t great for a people that are starving.

Apple has a big office in Cork with several thousand employees. The “i” in iPhone stands for Ireland, and this is the early prototype.

It’s weird that Disney felt compelled to pull in Hulu’s green / teal brand colors. Disney+ has more users and Disney has the more valuable brand by a mile.

The pink on the left side and the purple on the right. Except for like 3 random ones that are on the wrong side.

It's a common safety feature for wet & dry razors.
It's so people don't take them into the shower or bath while it is plugged in.

Many wet-dry rechargeable razors don't let you run them when they're plugged in. Power cords + water = ⚡💀 ⚡

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones (www.theverge.com)

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The EU passed new laws to address new needs. The US is trying to see if they can provide consumer protection with existing consumer protection laws from the past.

Passing consumer protection laws is pretty hard when people don’t vote enough democrats into the senate and house. The GOP hates consumer protection regulation.

Glass door used to be interesting, but this site is total trash now. You can’t do anything without creating an account and filling out a bunch of shit. That site is basically a dark pattern hall of fame.

They probably really crippled the long term growth of that company by making stupid short term greedy decisions that killed the user experience and scared people away.

What are the patents?

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I can't believe I have to defend reddit for once.

I’m not rushing to pick a side until someone posts the actual patient claim. Both of these parties suck, and I’m not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

We don’t even know what the suit is about, so I don’t know how anyone can pick a side about anything.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Side with Reddit about what? We don’t even know what the lawsuit is about.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

No one posted what the suit is about. I don’t know how we can make that claim right now.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’m just going to wait until I hear the details of the suit. At this point I don’t really understand the point of picking a side when we have almost no information.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe it’s a patent about painfully slow product development. They’re both pretty great at that.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

We absolutely know it’s about patents. That’s the only thing we know.

But we don’t know what the patents are, and what the infringement allegations are. Knowing that will help us determine who is in the right.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. Yours aren’t too shabby either!

And my IT team pushed this release as a required update, immediately, as soon as it dropped. And now they’ve learned a lesson. Wait a week or two on major point releases.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been in tech for decades, so I know what they’re supposed to do, but my several thousand person company’s IT has decided to roll Mac updates out immediately for some weird reason

That said, we’re in an industry where there is likely legal risk if office machines are not running OS’ with all the latest security patches. But by pushing patches immediately, they also expose the company to technical problems or security vulnerabilities that accidentally appear in the occasional new release.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

My company paused the rollout once all these bugs started appearing. They pushed it live before knowing how the GM was being received at scale.

To be fair, the onslaught of negative Trump coverage also helped him lose the house in 2018, the general in 2020 and a shit load of easy Republican house seats in 2022.

People seem to forget that a lot of folks stayed home in 2016 because they thought it was impossible for that clown shoe to get elected. No one believes that anymore.

Here is what one of these ads looks like:

https://www.reddit.com/u/PhillyCanada/s/O52X2oGf5V

It does not appear to be labeled as an ad on the Reddit mobile app.

Ghostalmedia , (edited )
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Which is why they’re now under investigation from the FTC.

edit: FTC not FCC
edit 2: looks like they're being investigated about AI, not ads.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The context is in the article posted. This was one of the early experiments for the new ad platform. Looks like they did some simple test by coordinating things manually, then once they validated the concept, they spent the year building out a platform and interface for advertisers.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder if a lot of that is astroturfing.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Actually, a LOT of people stream with a smart TV instead of a separate device. More than half in the US.

https://gitnux.org/smart-tv-sales-statistics/

This tends to track with what I see in my family and friend’s homes. People tend to do couch streaming via the smart TV’s apps.

Personally, I think a fast, separate HDMI CEC device is a MUCH better user experience, and it’s still one remote. But for whatever reason, a lot of people aren’t opting to go with a separate AppleTV, GoogleTV ChromeCast, Roku, game console, etc.

Firefox saw an increase in users (~50% in Germany and ~30% in France) following Apple’s default browser changes in the EU, as did Brave. (www.theverge.com)

Firefox spokesperson Christopher Hilton tells The Verge that the browser has seen a more than 50 percent jump in users in Germany and a nearly 30 percent increase in France....

Ghostalmedia , (edited )
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Analytics nit:

30% of increase in daily installs ≠ 30% increase in users. It might lead to that, but only they maintain the increased install rates and maintain active users.

If I my sandwich shop sells 30% more sandwiches one day, that doesn’t mean I’m certain to make 30% more money at the end of the year. I might make more, I might make less.

Edit: also, this OS update has just rolled out. So this peak might last for a few days, then change once people are no longer getting the initial set up screen.

@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

They are still exploring options. They’ve told the press that all the iOS gecko work is still being researched.
