That's not what the sales numbers show. People are still replacing their phones for new ones, but in China they're buying Chinese brands, not American brands. Huawei sales are WAY up and is eating into Apple's market.

The US and China have been battling back and forth over trade, espionage, political influence in Asia, etc. China has been trying to elbow out American brands in the country, and the US has been doing the same.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

If you bought one of these because you have a heat pump and want to consider the outside temp, that service is now cut off. Not ideal.

As long as HomeKit remains a thing.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s not an open standard, and all of the 3rd party home kit apps are basically a new client for services that Apple develops.

I say this as someone who sticks with HomeKit because I think it’s one of the better IOT solutions if you care about for privacy and security. My home is all HomeKit compatible. Lutron, Eve, and homebridge for odds and ends.

But I’m fully aware that, if Apple decided to pull the plug, I’d probably be running some sort of local home brewed HomeKit clone on a raspberry pi to keep the network alive.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, 100%. Home assistant can basically connect to any damn thing. Home assistant is going to be the fall back for a lot of legacy iot devices and platforms.

“We’re seeing a greater need for authentic human connections”

I’m going to take a wild guess and wager that this is about increasing engagement by increasing the amount of opening moves that are created on the platform.

Dating sites profit by increasing engagement with the platform, not by getting you an “authentic connection” that gets you off the platform and into a healthy relationship.

There’s a reason people are going analog again. They know these sites are just a thirst trap.

Ghostalmedia , (edited )
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but there is a new CEO, people are leaving the dating apps like crazy now, and they’re probably trying to do some shortsighted BS that will increase engagement now at the expense of eroding the long term health of the product experience.

I recently jumped ship to a new gig that MS’s account reps have burrowed deeply into.

It’s been about 7 years since I’ve been in a “Microsoft for all the things” shop. Now that I’m back in Microsoft land after 7 years, my first thought is “what the fuck happened in Redmond?”

The software is buggy, people are restarting left and right, and everything is missing 25% of their competitor’s features. I feel like I’m visiting a childhood home that is now occupied by hoarders.

Coworkers India for Silicon Valley teams = hope you like standup before bed.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t seen anyone actually describe what this “team” is.

Tesla’s PR teams said that they’re still expanding the network, but at a slower pace. If that’s the case, I assume this mostly guts the product and program management folks, and the goal is to consolidate this department with a related department.

Does anyone actually have details about the full scope of layoffs and the scope of who remains?

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yikes.

Imagine taking your most strategic asset, and an industry leading product, then doing this to it.

Musk is this generation’s Howard Hughes. He was always eccentric and weird, but he’s aggressively sliding into his compulsions like Hughes did.

Hughes ended up locked away, in a dark penthouse, getting yearly fingernail cuts, with a collection of urine filled bottles.

Ghostalmedia ,

Dude could’ve owned America’s next generation energy infrastructure if he played his cards right.

Hughes was the OG rich pee bottle guy.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App (lemmy.world)

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Challenge accepted.
I’m going to get an IPhone, load up an Android cloud emulator, upload the Rabbit R1 app, then use it to access its orange version of ChatGPT.

Ghostalmedia ,

Wait until people realize that it’s just ChatGPT.

Moving forward, Google appears to be relenting to Apple, and will be giving up their control over RCS E2EE. Apple and Google are working with the GSMA on a universal standard that is not owned by a single gatekeeper.

That said, for v1 of RCS on iOS, since that universal encryption standard doesn’t exist, RCS will be unencrypted on iOS, allegedly. So, it’s likely to mean that, this fall, iOS to Android is still just as insecure as ever over carrier text messaging, but now images and videos won’t look like shit. Then at some point soon, cross platform messaging will get proper encryption.

We’ll probably need to wait until WWDC before we get more info on what’s actually happening with cross platform RCS.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The E2EE element of RCS has basically been a property Google thing, despite all their marketing BS about RCS seeming like some sort of open universal career messaging platform.

Although, allegedly they’ve finally relented and a universal encryption solution is now in the works.

I used to download a lot of stuff from a nice Spanish man named War̃ez.

Here’s what’s behind that stupid ad

https://www.10news.com/news/fact-or-fiction/fact-or-fiction-online-ad-advises-people-to-wrap-doorknobs-in-foil-when-home-alone

It clearly implies there is some kind of safety benefit to it. But there is not.

Clicking on the ad leads to a lengthy slide show which eventually gets to the doorknob story.

All it says is aluminum foil can be used as an alternative to tape to cover doorknobs and hardware while painting.

It has nothing to do with safety and the inclusion of the phrase "when you're home alone" was only used as clickbait to make the ad seem more important.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

This is the "fourth year surge," where 1st term presidents rush to get a lot of positive policy change so they look like they're doing a good job

It’s literally not that at all. It was about the GOP gumming up the appointment process to the FCC board. Democratic party appointees have only had a 3-2 majority on the FCC board for about 6 months.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Read the article? Never.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not like they just sat around and did nothing for 6 months. The vote was scheduled almost a month ago, and there was a period to draft the rules, a period to accept comments and feedback, etc. Things were in motion behind the scenes, we’re just seeing the end result of the last 6 months.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Dems have only had control of the FCC for a few months. It’s nice to see the regulators actually regulating, and not caving to corporate lobbyists.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The funny thing is, many of us on Lemmy work in software development. We’re often having to explain to people “yes, I know this looks like it should take 2 weeks, but it’s more complex than that. You just don’t have the technical or institutional expertise to understand what’s happening behind the scenes.”

Ghostalmedia OP ,

My guess is they’re more concerned about propaganda. They’re concerned about it being Fox News, but for the CCP.

Starts off innocent enough, then slowly starts pushing disinformation that’s in service of a political entity.

Ghostalmedia OP ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Difference being, Facebook is just greedy, and will promote toxic disinformation because it gets high engagement numbers. If factual civics videos got high engagement, Facebook would gladly promote that. They want to promote whatever is going to sell more ads.

With the CCP, the motivation is the message, not the money. With Facebook, the motivation is the money and whatever message makes the most of it.

Gen 1 AirPods = Trash batteries that become miserable after 2 years. Good luck making it through a 1 hour call if you use them a lot. These things beg for the landfill by year 3.

Gen 3 AirPods or AirPods Pro’s = surprisingly good battery longevity. Expect these to be solid after 2 years.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The recycling plug is a little silly, but they are correct about AirPods lasting longer than that article claims.

The first gen AirPods were absolutely ready for hospice after 2 years. But the new ones are much better. Anyone that’s used some Pro 2s or Gen 3s knows what I’m talking about.

This article’s claims are kind of outdated and they feel like they were written by someone who hasn’t used one of the models made during the last 5 years.

This is how to comment effectively on Lemmy.

If you post about an Apple product working reasonably, in order to counteract the confirmation bias downvotes, you are required to supply two paragraphs praising Linux.

    Ghostalmedia ,
    @Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

    It wasn’t so much Taylor Swift, as it was a famously passionate fan base why couldn’t get tickets. If this was the 90’s, and Micheal Jackson’s die hards couldn’t get tickets to the Dangerous Tour, you best bet that people would be beating down lawmakers doors.

    Ghostalmedia ,
    @Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

    IMHO, it wasn’t her wealth. They’re like Micheal Jackson fans from the early 90’s, or Beatles fans from the 60’s. Simply denying them a ticket to her biggest tour was all it took.
