This reference is so old, that Johnny 5 must be dead by now.

GlitterInfection ,

Plus back before the woke liberal agenda took over the media he was always talking about "boners" which I can relate to.

GlitterInfection ,

It's the set of background conditions and events leading up to the current story, but that's not important right now.

GlitterInfection ,

I'm fond of saying that recycling is almost exclusively bad for the planet. It's true and people don't like hearing it.

GlitterInfection , (edited )

Recycling was actively brought forward as a solution by the oil companies to push the blame of plastic use onto consumers.

So while recycling rare metals is always valuable, plastic is definitely not. Almost all plastic gets buried in landfills, and the only way to make this not happen is to not make products with plastics.

By creating and marketing plastic recycling as a solution that the consumers must take onto themselves, it allowed them to rake in profits by moving everything to cheap plastic alternatives.

We are now literally made of microplastics as a result.

GlitterInfection ,

Sort of. It's less a guard down thing as a fraudulent hoax thing.

GlitterInfection ,

This is absolutely right. It's reductive of me to say that recycling is bad for the environment; intentionally reductive.

People generally have a very hard time absorbing the fact that plastic recycling is a scam, so it's hard to start nuanced to actually get the point across.

But you definitely nailed it. I would argue that if it was reduce, reuse, revolt, the environment would be in a much better place.

I can almost guarantee that more people care about the free next gen update of Fallout 4 than will ever play the Fallout London mod.

I'm legitimately excited for the Fallout London Mod, so this isn't meant to minimize it, but modding, even in Bethesda games, is a much smaller niche than people on here seem to think.

Bethesda is legitimately doing something good for the game, for free, and they announced it two years in advance.

The only upsetting part of this is that they recently announced a launch date and it is coincidentally close to when Fallout London was planning to release.

If that one coincidence wasn't happening, then nobody would be complaining about this pretty cool free update.

At least not until after it releases.

GlitterInfection ,

As the London devs even said, they are really excited for this new content and performance update, and they asked you to put down your pitchforks.

This is going to be a setback for the modding that has been done, for sure. That is the contract the mod community understands when they build their creations. It's very evident at every step of the way that you are not using consumer grade products with ABI guarantees.

But Bethesda has publicly stated they went out of their way to try to reduce breakage of mods this time compared to the skyrim anniversary version. So we have to wait and see what that means.

But if you want to hold back performance improvements for everyone because a small niche within the modding scene will have to update their mods to work, that's not a reasonable ask.

By allowing emulators on the app store... Apple Bad?

GlitterInfection ,

So it's good faith to say that when Apple does something good that they are bad and it's typical of them to be bad?

GlitterInfection ,

That's good!

GlitterInfection ,

I always feel like I'm taking crazy pills when the subject of Apple comes up on lemmy.

GlitterInfection ,

...

Can I go now?

GlitterInfection ,

Good thing that didn't happen here, then?

GlitterInfection ,

Urban Dictionary would like to access your Bristol Scale Data.

GlitterInfection ,

The link above had this to say about the author:

I learned what an unhappy individual he had been: an alcoholic, prone to depression. “I have always understood the Nazis,” Golding confessed, “because I am of that sort by nature.” And it was “partly out of that sad self-knowledge” that he wrote Lord of the Flies.

So not necessarily allegory. It seems more a bleak worldview portrayed through fiction.

GlitterInfection ,

If you think of LLMs as a thing to replace search bars then this kind of makes sense.

GlitterInfection ,

Like search bars.

GlitterInfection ,

This is true. I asked my LLM.

GlitterInfection ,

I haven't tried LLMs myself, but even completely made up garbage would be better than today's search engine results.

You either get advertisements for things that have nothing to do with what you're trying to find or you get privacy preserving links to sites that have nothing to do with what you're trying to find.

GlitterInfection ,

So your arguments for agnosticism over atheism is that you don't want to make religious people feel uncomfortable and science isn't philosophy?

GlitterInfection ,

She's crying because she realized that she could buy a second home if she hadn't been foolishly donating to the church all this time.

GlitterInfection ,

You messaged me directly rather than responding in the thread, but messaging back is failing, so I will respond here.

There is no theory involving deities that fits the models of the universe we have based on observable evidence, and there is no evidence in support of any theory involving deities.

For anything else we would say that this thing doesn't exist and leave it at that.

Agnosticism gets lost in the fallacy that since it's logically impossible to prove non-existence we must hold open the possibility of existence without evidence.

So I'm an atheist because it is the default state to be, it makes no statement requiring evidence, and it doesn't require fallacy.

GlitterInfection ,

Their first part is a short work of fiction about making a religious person feel bad.

Their second is saying that science doesn't answer the question "why."

Philosophy asks "why" at least it does here on Earth.

GlitterInfection ,

Lets ruin it so they can't!

GlitterInfection ,

Bullying instance admins into aligning with your values is absolutely the type of behavior that will ruin this protocol.

Meta is evil and Threads is lame. And I can block them on my own, thank you.

‘Mamma Mia!’ Stage Star Sara Poyzer Replaced By AI On BBC Show To Recreate Voice Of Dying Person — Update (deadline.com)

The BBC has issued a statement that offers important context to Sara Poyzer’s viral social media posts. The British broadcaster said it is using AI technology in a “highly sensitive documentary” to represent the voice of a person who is nearing the end of their life....

GlitterInfection ,

It's amazing how context matters on these things, because I was pretty peeved for her when I saw the original article.

Her comment feels a little callous and manipulative with this context, but I am going to give the benefit of the doubt that she didn't have these details when she made her post.

Catholic school is just the middle ages with extra steps!

Flutter takes the stage at GDC (medium.com)

TLDR: Flutter made its debut at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, showcasing the progress made in building games with Flutter. Over 15,000 new mobile games have been developed using Flutter in the last year. Flutter offers advantages for 2D casual games, such as being open-source, having a rich plugin...

GlitterInfection ,

What are some other 2D game engines that you're thinking about?

GlitterInfection ,

I wouldn't be able to compare them from a feature perspective, but it seems like Flutter itself is a cross platform general 2D app development toolkit, and people have used it to make games despite that not being its focus.

This Flutter Casual Games Toolkit looks to be a layer on top of Flutter to make that easier to do. Which is as reasonable a reason as any to create a toolkit like this.

But Godot as an engine predates the release of Flutter. So I would imagine starting fresh with no Flutter experience or jumping from Unity you would be probably better off with Godot.

GlitterInfection ,

You're right.

Nobody should own things because security is not good enough.

It's exactly like saying something as dumb as that.

And I love unisex rules that apply almost exclusively to women!

GlitterInfection ,

In some countries it's against the law for women to leave the house without their husband's permission.

So there are likely men who actually would believe that a woman doesn't NEED to walk down the street any more than take a nude selfie.

GlitterInfection ,

Everyone stating that the first panel is a unisex rule has really not given it much thought.

Men are not punished for being sexual beings in our society nearly as harshly or frequently as women. A man is not likely to be branded a "slut" for the fact that their naked body exists and was allowed to be photographed.

Yes, it could cause men harm to steal and leak their naked photos, especially if it's wielded as a weapon in a revenge porn scenario.

But no, men do not have an equal impact on them as women do in the case of having their nudes stolen and leaked.

And I am just going to venture a guess to say that the rule in the first panel has been said to or about women significantly more often than it has to men. I've only ever heard it said about female celebrities in the news.

I say this as a gay man who has tons of nude selfies and sex videos dating back 20 years or so. Every gay man I know has nudes. It's an expected part of gay dating and hook up culture to have photos like that to share. If they were just leaked to some website I would most likely not be impacted at all in any way, even if friends found them.

That's just not the case for most women.

GlitterInfection ,

Make up a company you tried to start but failed at and plug it in there.

It's not a lie, you just failed to try to start it.

GlitterInfection ,

Exactly.

You should have asked them for their W-2 before agreeing to meet.

GlitterInfection ,

Yes yes. Apple Bad pls upvote me.

But in this case I pointed out some things that are wrong with the DOJ's complaints, one thing that is valid, and asked questions about two that nobody, and my searches, have answered. They seem to also be completely wrong on the DOJ side.

I doubt you use their products or will be affected by them being altered in any way, but I do and will, so this case interests me as do the details.

GlitterInfection ,

Thank you!

Searching for what you said got me this recent article which does a better job of explaining all the issues and complaints:

https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/21/24107669/doj-v-apple-apple-watch-messaging-digital-wallets-lock-in

GlitterInfection ,

That's fair. Corporations are people. And people are the worst.

GlitterInfection ,

I tried to keep it super subtle but you got me!

GlitterInfection ,

Fortunately for you, this lawsuit doesn't involve the Mac.

Fortunately for the rest of us, Apple doesn't have anywhere near a monopoly in any industry, which is honestly where this case should be dismissed.

If you have to take a specific month out of the year, limit the region, and define a category as "performance" to get your numbers fudged and you still only get to 70% you're not exactly making a strong case for a monopoly.
