Ok if your ad uses TL;DR or any other internet speak, you deserve to go bankrupt. I'm so fucking sick of corporations trying to cash in on meme culture and trends and ruining it every single time.

We also don't talk about the fact that the only humans that were saved was a family. Who repopulated the earth.

Like, with Adam and Eve and their offspring, the implication is that they inbred because literally no other humans existed. Still pretty gross, but the second time it happened was just abject laziness on God's part. Like your omnipotent ass couldn't have at the very least picked a few more families.

I'm imagining Mozart like an elephant where he knows when he's close to death and goes to a dedicated place to die.

Isn't there a theory that Mozart was murdered?

The FLOSS community should have the right to revoke usage of the word "open" from for profit companies like that.

I mean you can boot Linux entirely from RAM

HP’s 'All-In' Printer Rental Watches Everything You Print, Tells HP All About It (www.extremetech.com)

In addition to tracking the printer’s online or offline status, page count, and ink levels, your rented printer will look at the types of documents you’re printing (e.g., PDF, JPG, Word), the types of devices that initiated the print job, “peripheral devices,” and other “metrics” related to the service, the All-In...

Can someone tell me why this is even necessary? Network printing has existed for almost as long as printers have and doesn't require the cloud. There are standard protocols for discovering printers on the network and sending prints to them. I'm on Linux, have never installed printer drivers or even manually set up a printer, and I can print just fine over the network, it just knows which device is a printer and I can send prints to it with a single click. It even knows what the printer's capabilities are, for example whether it can print double sided. Are people so afraid of the system print dialog that they insist on using HP's app or something?

Where did the rules of the road come from? (www.youtube.com)

So I'm not posting this in this community because I think the old way of having no rules of movement is better with the current state of car infrastructure, obviously it's not and the rules are what keep cars from being even more deadly. But I'm just saying, the old system worked really well right up until cars showed up, and if...

Appeal to nature fallacy. Just because something is a certain way in nature doesn't automatically mean it's good because nature has no concept of good or bad. Living in "the wild" has a far higher mortality rate than any of us should accept today. By your logic nothing should be a human right because we can always just die if we don't have it, just as nature intended.

Also, humans originated in the African savannah, which is much warmer than the places most humans now live. And even in the savannah at the dawn of our species we were nest building animals that instinctively would make shelters for ourselves. Housing is as natural to humanity as hives are to bees.

Honestly, they might even consider it fortunate that the company showed them it's cards now and not when they're their actual employer. Dodged a bullet.

    HiddenLayer5 ,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

Correct. You don't want to work for cards. The corporate structure is too flimsy. /s

Because the reason companies are brazen enough to pull the crap that they do is because most people have viewpoints along the lines of this post. Reddit for example has almost certainly performed a cost-benefit analysis and wouldn't have locked down their API like they did if they suspected an actual risk of enough people switching to Lemmy and other alternatives where the lost revenue would have been significant. And they were right, the vast majority of Reddit users tangentially looked at Lemmy and similar alternatives but are still on Reddit. The people actually here on Lemmy saying they'll never use Reddit again are a tiny minority of Reddit's total userbase.

I'm genuinely surprised that a creator who has a ton of op-eds in his videos and constantly pushes for electrification and heat pumps citing their lower environmental impact, which is very correct and noble of him mind you, doesn't apply the same logic to software.

Also, obviously it's not good to be a dick when promoting FLOSS as you're more likely to push people away from it, if that was his point then I'd tend to agree (admittedly I've been guilty of that before). Maybe that's what he meant, but he doesn't mention that in the post and seems to imply that even a friendly or matter of fact suggestion that a FLOSS alternative is available is unacceptable. Like are you complaining just to complain or are you complaining because you want suggestions on how to solve the problem? I don't know what his experience with FLOSS discourse is, but I've personally complained about a proprietary software, had someone point out that an alternative exists, and immediately tried it out and often end up switching. Literally the other day, I was complaining about the Unix cp command, someone suggested I use rsync instead because "it's better", and what do you know they were right.

What the fuck the do you have a life question is so offensive! Stop trying to just be edgy in memes!

I'm so sick of these stupid stereotypes that the Linux community has. I'll have you know that I use both Debian and Fedora and I do not in fact have a life.

It's always ironic and super self aware wolf when a customer says they "feel bad" for you because you're working on Sunday, Christmas, etc, or working in the dead of night for 24/7 establishments.

Also, Catholics and many other Christian denominations literally believe that people who work on a Sunday go to hell for violating the Sabbath, yet after Sunday mass tons of them flood into restaurants, causing the cooks and wait staff to go to hell.

All of you using adblockers are pathetic. You'll willingly deprive companies of their revenue just because you can't be bothered to see a few ads? It's not like ads are harmful or anything!

...hang on I think porn just started playing on my computer I have to find where the popup is and close it... Right after I close this other popup that says I've won 69 trillion dollars, and this one for dick pills, and this one for free vbucks, and this online casino one, and that one saying I have 420 viruses on my PC, and this one from the local fringe religious group that says I'll go to hell if I poop, and this one that straight up looks like it's trying to download ransomware, and... Damn my battery just died from all the extra processing power those popups needed. Uh but adblock is still evil though, don't forget that.

Fun fact: Strawberry is called an accessory fruit because its seeds are on the outside, so the seeds themselves are the real "fruits" (in the same way each grain of rice or wheat is itself a fruit, well technically the fruit consists of the grain plus the outer pod/husk that gets removed when harvested). The red flesh we like to eat is the accessory fruit because it in itself does not contain seeds.

Raspberries and blackberries are called aggregate fruits because they're essentially many fruits attached together as a single structure. Actually, a strawberry is called an aggregate accessory fruit because it has many "fruits" directly attached to an accessory structure.

Getting really tired of this "the fediverse needs to cater to normie interests because we're here now and it's what we deserve" attitude. If you can't find a community to click with, you can always create one, join one you don't know much about with an open mind, or don't use the fediverse if it doesn't have the content you like. Sorry to say it but you're not special and no existing users on any social media platform is obligated to go out of their way to make you feel comfortable on the platform.

Same with the "your open source, community developed platform/client sucks! I demand you make the UX better because I the user deserve better! No I'm not going to donate to your development fund because you suck and need to be better before you deserve my money!" sentiments that I see on Lemmy more and more now. Seems like everyone just expects corporate level user experience and customer service from people developing open source software mostly for free as passion projects. Even after the numerous corporate boondoggles that drove people to the fediverse in the first place people aren't the slightest bit willing to change their paradigms regarding how social media should be run.

Rant: So apparently some people think because I don't support private car ownership, I also don't support public transit and still support urban sprawl?

So I made a passing comment of "it's almost like private car ownership is a really inefficient use of space and resources" the other day, which I didn't really pay much mind to. But all the replies were either explaining the concept of public transportation as if I don't know that's the solution to private car dependence (not in...
