We killed god and replaced it with Google.

meep_launcher ,

There's another thread I was reading where it was talking about the scientific method, and then someone talked about a religious guy they knew, and then BAM. Next comment was "and my dad did these horrible things".

Like it was so loosely related the two comments would have no issues getting married.

There is action happening, and there is hope

And there are some pretty cool things happening under the surface

I see it as damage control while these grassroots attempts at major system changes take hold. We're holding off the assault while we wait for the calvary to come, but they are coming. We just have to not blow their chance.

All Texans are war criminals

meep_launcher OP ,

Yes, but all Minecraft villagers are also war criminals.

meep_launcher ,

I slightly disagree with you here so obviously YOU are the fed!

I'm here to rescue you with an ice pick

While I had a lot of things that made me angry at my mom in my early 20s, I realized she did this with me with my music. Sometimes she still would suggest I go into sales and get a big boy job and get down on me for my choices, but I also know on her good days she was super supportive. The last panel is word for word what she would say.

meep_launcher ,

Oh yeah I've had that conversation over and over. I'm well aware of the reality of a profession in music, but I also have realized in the 10 years I spent in corporate America that I can't live that life.

Someone said "don't get a career in the arts until you've exhausted all other options". It was annoying to have to constantly convince my mom that I was deeply unhappy in those roles, but she's come around a bit more especially because I'm actually finding success following my passion.

It's a rough road for sure, but I've found avoiding unhappiness is not the road to happiness.

That's what's wild- Adam Smith has been totally whitewashed by modern capitalists. They want to believe he is the exact opposite of Karl Marx, but their boy actually has many similarities with Karl that they choose to ignore. Kinda like how they ignore the parts of Jesus's teachings that don't vibe with their free markets and guns for all.

I live in Chicago.

I'm not gonna say there's no reason to have a car, but I see no reason for the average Chicagoan to own a car.

The CTA is actually pretty reliable overall
The streets are comparatively bikeable
The Divvy System (bike share) is well layer out.

Make America Multimodal Again.
This. Shit. Works.

meep_launcher ,

I'm tired of figuring out what's gay or straight. I just wanna fuck in peace.

meep_launcher ,

People are saying get hobbies... And yep.

I've been very "successful" on the dating apps, but they almost always resulted in a one night stand or a fling for a few weeks. You meet someone with the expectation of romance and you never form a friendship because you see eachother as romantic partners first. That may work for some people, but I see it as a loss of foundation. When I don't have a history with someone before being intimate, I tend to feel overwhelmed with the anxiety of expectations.

For me I found swing dancing was a great way to meet people. It's fun, there isn't necessarily an expectation of romance, but it also is a mood where romance can happen. I also thought to myself "I can either sit on my couch high AF while feeling like shit as I swipe left and right while trying to hold a virtual conversation that mostly goes nowhere, or I can go dancing. If I strike out on tinder, I feel like I wasted an evening. If I strike out dancing, fuck it I had a great time anyway!"

I'm a dude and I would love a world where women feel safe to be open with their boundaries. This comic nails it in that the problem isn't women, it's other men.

Patriarchal society doesn't just hurt women, it hurts men too.

Any guys reading this- we don't have to be the problem, in fact we are part of the solution. We are not useless, we are not supposed to just shut up and listen, we are supposed to be role models for the next generation. We have work to do, and when everyone benefits, we will benefit too. This isn't a zero sum game.

I'm an educator, and I try to teach the girls that men don't need to be feared, and teach the boys not to be men to be afraid of. It's my job to show the boys that there is an alternative masculinity to what Andrew Tate prescribes.

If anyone wants a good YouTube male role model, I suggest John Green. I want more men who can recite Emily Dickinson and be open with their emotions in healthy ways.

meep_launcher ,

That's a very real experience, and I have experienced that too. As a male teacher, I have often been seen with suspicion. As just a tall guy who has some self awareness, I can sense that I can be seen as a potential threat. It's exhausting.

But remember, it's not women's fault. It's the fault of asshole guys that bought into a shit idea of what masculinity is and taught women to be on guard.

The fact is the boys are not alright. They are being outperformed in school, and in all demographics except the elite, there is a drop in real wealth among men when women are climbing. This is especially true for men of color. If there is a failure of progressive change in the 2000s, it's not giving the boys a path forward beyond "no means no".

meep_launcher OP ,

It appears my meme took damage getting here. Better have some hearty meaty rice balls.

meep_launcher ,

Because lemm.ee doesn't allow direct uploading, I have to upload all my memes through Imgur.

JFC Imgur is the 2nd meanest social media community after pre-2017 yik yak. Good Lord that place was like a high school theater department.

meep_launcher ,

Frankly I never trusted Glassdoor. I assume most reviews are made by the companies HR department to lie about how great it is. I just need to look at the reviews of the companies I've worked for to see that it's 99% bullshit.

Don't trust employers. They lie to you and underpay you.

meep_launcher ,

Maybe you can help me out.

I see lots of folks here who are programmers or have a ton of knowledge on ways to get around the big 5 to maintain privacy, but as a layman with only so much time in the day, it's hard to avoid taking the path of least resistance when using the Internet.

I am a musician with a public profile on Instagram, and many of my friends who are also artists use TikTok or YouTube to get their exposure. It's kind of a necessity if you want to simply book a gig at a venue (they will ask for your social media handles to see how many followers you have to determine if it's even worth having you on).

As artists we are also not flush with cash to pay for all the privacy software or VPNs. On top of that, so much of our information is already out there, I'm not sure how we'd even start reeling it back in.

My aunt once told my (then) 10 year old sister to "just marry a man you can stand". We keep wondering when aunt Wendy is going to kill her husband. He's a dick.

meep_launcher OP ,

Hell yea I love a good wiki deep dive

I am actually writing an analysis of the music industry and counter culture responses with regards to AI and the future of music! I'm calling it musical humanism. 🎷 🎺 🎸

meep_launcher OP ,

Haha, the appeal of political science to me is less about arguing with strangers about the news and more talking about broader philosophies and theories and then applying them to what we are seeing in the world. I feel like I can have a more nuanced conversation about the prisoner's dilemma with regards to x topic, or applying philosophies like American Pragmatism to solving problems.

Talking about the news without using some of the tools political scientists use has so many emotional trip wires that it can feel like I'm just keeping up with the Kardashians. That said sometimes I just can't help but keep up with the Kardashians.

meep_launcher OP ,

So this supports my point completely. No fuckin clue what you're saying.

meep_launcher OP ,

Depends on what you're wanting to focus on, but a great start would be Rules for Rulers by Arnold Meltsner, Freakonomics by Levitt & Dubner, CIA: legacy of Ashes by Tim Weiner, confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins are some that I started early.

CGP Grey did a great job synthesizing Rules for Rulers on YouTube as well.

Also a big think video Why Sociopaths Rise to Power

Also Veritasium has a great video on game theory

Hope that helps!

meep_launcher OP , (edited )

Yep, it's a thing!

"You can philosophize over how many fairies fit on a toadstool all day, but if it won't help anything, what's the point?"

If you're talking politics, you need to take a step back and ask how useful your questions are. It may be tempting to try solving a conflict that has a long history by finding out "who started it", but if the answer would yield no progress in the peace process, it would be a better use of time and energy to focus on other discussions.

I've used it as an economic philosophy as well. Instead of looking at capitalism and socialism as ideologies to guide thought, look at them as tools to an end. Identify your goals for society (more educated populace, lower infant mortality, greater freedom of the press, etc.) and then look at what different perspectives bring for solutions. Sometimes you may find letting a free market take it's course is an answer. Sometimes you may find deep regulation or nationalization is the answer.

When this philosophy is applied to something more personal like religion, it would ask "is the religion that you are in helping you or hindering you?" If someone's religion gives them immense guilt and depression, it would be worth it to consider something else. If an alcoholic finds peace in a Mormon Temple, then it might just be what they need. It's a pretty chill philosophy when it comes to religion.

meep_launcher ,

So I consider myself an optimist, but even I know it's stupid to say "I'm happy I only suffered a little bit so I will ignore solvable problems". Also I find it very weird and disturbing that the argument "you are free to die" is being used to promote what I assume is a free market approach to healthcare. Or maybe you don't have an angle other than to tell OP that they aren't in pain, when obviously they are, and that's fucked up.

Yea, there's a lot we have going for us with medical advances, but let's not forget the reason millions die every year is not because lack of medical advances, but rather lack of access to those advances. Those millions of people didn't choose not to afford it. They didn't choose to die.

Being an optimist isn't about ignoring the problems of the world and calling people who are upset about these problems bitter.
It's about looking at these problems head on and believing you can address them. If you are an optimist, the light you shine should allow you to see.

Counterpoint:

The Wholefoods in Redmond, Wa is known as Hellfoods by their employees because of how cold people are there and how overbearing management can be. It also is in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. When I worked there, I love the warm summer evenings when I could go out to the outfield to fetch a cart because I got to be outside and no longer under the micromanagement that is retail.

When I would clock off, sometimes I'd nab a cart and send it out on purpose for the guy behind me to give them an escape.

meep_launcher ,

But you could say the same for the original premise- not every employee hates getting rogue carts, in fact many like getting them.

I gave an anecdotal point, but the broader argument simply questions one of the assumptions of OP.
