Hirom ,

Tradition and inertia.

The USA is proud to have the oldest and longest-standing written constitution. The fact it hasn't been rewriteen in a long time help explain why there's still an electoral college, slavery for prisoners (13th amendements), and weak regulation of campaign finance.

Hirom ,

That's interesting. Thanks for pointing it out.

My point is having a very old constitution isn't much of a boast if keeping it as-is causes political issues.

Hirom , (edited )

That sounds a bit contradictory but there's an important details. Part of the accusation seems to be about picking winners, ie giving subsidies to specific companies rather than the sector as a whole.

The anti-subsidy investigation has been intended to confirm the Commission’s allegations that manufacturers of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in China benefit from countervailable – i.e. specific and advantageous to the receiving companies – subsidies

If that's true then a tweak to subsidies might technically solve the issue without changing the EU-China competition balance.

IMHO the EU should focus on carbon border tax, and on doing it quickly and efficiently. The idea is taxing import from countries that don't tax pollution, or at least less than the EU does, to make competing companies subject to similar emissions tax/regulation.

Hirom ,

That's the first time I hear of Matrix having this issue.

I'm curious to know more, but the video only cite an anonymous source. Are there evidence or more technical details available regarding this?

Hirom ,

I'm interested into the technical details, not actual URLs. How come servers cited in the video keep hosting/seeding chatrooms despite closing corresponding accounts? Is this impossible due to Matrix's design, or is it poor moderation from server admins?

About URLs: the author is absolutely right to blur these. The only people he should be sharing this is police, or maybe admins if they're not aware of the abuse on their server.

Hirom ,

Thanks for the explanation. I'm considering Matrix but will hold off, at least until v1.11 or v1.12 solves the unintended CDN issue described in another comment here, cf https://matrix.org/blog/2024/06/20/matrix-v1.11-release/#continue-reading

Hirom ,

Scams, identity thefts, manipulation through targeted ads (eg Cambridge Analytica), malware delivered via ads

Hirom ,

They were years ahead of the curve with AI hardware, and they're well placed to benefit from the AI craze.

Regardless of whether a company's AI product is useful, or profitable, they need lot of hardware to make it run.

Hirom ,

Some projects of Signal-compatible clients and forks received a message from a Signal representrive requesting they stop distributing unofficial clients that connect to their servers.

That probably has on shilling effect on Linux distribution that may be considering building and distributing Signal in their repository.

Hirom ,

They can't possibly provide a package for every distro.

Signal's model, ie keep tight control over development and distribution of the client, and the absence of federation, it well suited for Apple/Google's stores, but not at all for open-source and Linux' ecosystem.

Hirom ,

Yes, AppImage can run on more distro.

Still AppImage has disadvantages over DEB: No auto-update, No/less system integration, Bigger install packages.

Hirom ,

Not surprising. If there's a way for a non-admin user to use this, it means there's probably a way for a non-admin process to access the data.

Even if if were more secure, there's probably plenty of ways for attackers to escalate privileges to admin.

The bigger issue is Microsoft providing an official tool for snooping on user activity. Malware won't have to install their own, and recall taking screenshots periodically won't be considered anomalous behaviour since it's an official Microsoft service.

Hirom ,

No toothbrush will last a lifetime, so maybe don't put $320 in it

Hirom ,

It sounds like this is completely clickbait article, bordering on misinformation.

Hirom ,

Ahah, I just told myself: cannot wait for Adam Something to debunk this

Hirom ,

Many of these are Google Play Services features, so it won't be available to users open-source Android flavors that are google-free.

Hirom ,

In that blog post, google does not commit to open sourcing these play services features, to integrate in future system upgrade.

I would love to be proven wrong.

Ghostery, Disconnect, Privacy Badger, etc

Privacy Badger does more than dFPI. dFPI just isolate cookies. Privacy Badger blocks cookies. And completely block connection to some hosts that are dedicated to tracking, which prevent other forms of tracking that aren't cookie-based.

Hirom OP ,

I wonder if that'd work, or if the Great Firewall of China already blocks it in Hong Kong

Hirom OP ,

They had a choice between complying to censorship, or refusing to play along and if necessary stop doing business in Hong Kong.

In the past, Google Search got out of China for the same reason.

Hirom OP ,

There are 42 RIPE Atlas probes online in Hong Kong.

Someone part of the Atlas network could check this against various probes.

Hirom ,

.. hackers are invited to find new ways to break into widely used software, like Safari, Adobe Flash

Flash? What year is this !?

Hirom ,

What about users' copyright?
Would Bright Data have to obtain permission from every user to scrap data while following copyright law?

I guess this wasn't a question raised during this lawsuit.

Hirom ,

The same ToS which the judge says X cannot enforce because it conflicts with copyright law.

Hirom ,

I'm going to assume lack of volonteers.

Hirom ,

This team will hopefully find jobs elsewhere very easily. Competitors should take this opportunity to hire skilled workers.

Hirom ,

Nice list. Note MicroG doesn't appear in F-Droid's default repository. It probably cannot be installed as a regular app, or requires adding a different repository.

Hirom OP ,

I'm currently trying HeliBoard, and was about to say I also miss the multi language cabapility.

But HeliBoard do have that capability, it's just not obvious to enable.

Hirom ,

NewPipe supports PeerTube and others, give it a try to lower your dependency on YouTube!

Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract (www.nbcnews.com)

"Google issued a stern warning to its employees, with the company’s vice president of global security, Chris Rackow, saying, “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again,” according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC."

Hirom , (edited )

That's a convenient way to make troublemakers go away. Even it some of these terminations are technically justified, it gives the appearance the company is looking for an excuse to fire critics.

Protesters probably need to be more savvy and respectful, but also need better protection against retribution.

Hirom ,

Mozilla should also investigate it own processes to understand how that happened, and question the person who approved this partnership.

Then publish a postmortem analysis. This may earn back some trust from their users.

Hirom ,

That's when you'd want officials and community leaders to call for restraint, avoid name calling, and insist on groups keeping their protests peaceful.

The war is horrible and there's gonna be to be animosity in that community. The least leaders could do is avoid fueling animosity amongst their neighbors.

Hirom ,

Apple would still feel pressure to add interoperability if all other big players do. iMessage would have a competitive disadvantage if it's the only one where users are unable to message the rest of the world.

Hirom ,

Yes. Still, it would be harder to not give a f if others walled gardens open up, and iMessage get disadvantaged by that wall.

It's as if iPhones were only able to make calls to other iPhones. Whereas all other devices where able to make calls to any device from any other vendor.

Hirom ,

Firefox Monitor and Firefox Relay are good ideas for subscription services that may be useful to users and hopefully get revenue.

When I looked closely at Firefox Relay, the email feature was redundant because I also have a service which does this, and the phone feature isn't available yet. Looking at Firefox Monitor and the list of companies/brokers it monitors, these appear focused on the US which isn't where I live.

I hope they can get revenue by promoting these services and making them useful for more people. This would be better than showing ads. I'd pay for a useful service, not to have an-free experience for something which is freely available with ads.

Hirom ,

Firefox Monitor is great as well. The premium version looks nice, you can pay to have it go remove your data from many data brokers. It seems mostly focused on US brokers, I'd pay for it worked with more european data collection companies.

Hirom ,

I observed racism and toxicity on X. Reported a couple pretty bad posts (eg a user wishing for drowning of immigrants), but the platform decided they're okay based their own moderation rules.

Hirom OP ,

That's good to hear! Did you had to tweak any setting to get this working?

There's another comment where someone wonders if there's any setting to enable this.

Hirom OP ,

Quoting from another comment:

Nope, just install 1.19 and A-Apps that are installed should start working.

Hirom ,

Great to see Taler continue to move forward. I hope a bank and/or fintech company finally adopt this. It shouldn't stay an experiment and deserve adoption for day-to-day purchases.
