It also feels like their insistence is doing nothing but hurting them. The average consumer who doesn't know the difference between a local account and a Microsoft account won't know or care about MS doing this.

But the users who do have a preference and do want a local account are just going to be irritated at it and give them bad press. They'll eventually figure out how to make a local account anyway and it may be the push they need to migrate off of Windows.

InvaderDJ ,

Old Reddit works for me. Does it just not work in general for you, or does it not work when not logged into an account?

InvaderDJ ,

That is basically what they did. There are a decent amount of third party apps around that work. I personally use Narwhal.

The further we get from the whole third party app debacle, the more I think this was just a way to kill the most popular apps. The ones that people said made reddit worth using. The ones that got shouted out in Apple keynotes.

InvaderDJ ,

Old Reddit works for me, but I am logged into an account.

InvaderDJ ,

Interesting. I'll have to test it when I get home. I'm always signed in and I use RES so could be some other factors causing it to not be a problem for me.

InvaderDJ ,

Private Internet Access works for me. Just tested logged out in an incognito mode tab.

InvaderDJ ,

Did you get a browser error when trying this? It might be because you left the www in the URL. I had to remove that and replace it with old, and it works. The rest of the link structure is the same on both old and new reddit. I even tried it from a VPN just to be sure it wasn't seeing my logged in cookies, and in a private browsing window where RES isn't allowed to run. Worked fine.

InvaderDJ ,

Is there anything about Aegis that makes it better than Authy? Just looking at the page for Aegis, I'm not seeing a lot of difference. And it being Android only limits it.

InvaderDJ ,

Ah, gotcha. Makes sense.

InvaderDJ ,

Someone answered this for me. It's just that it's open source. If that matters to you, there you go.

InvaderDJ ,

Did people call RCS open source? I'm not a huge follower of the standard, but I don't think I ever heard that said. In fact, I've heard people complain about not just the proprietary encryption but lack of E2E and carrier/Google control.

Its only advantages are that it is better than SMS and supported by the carriers, Google and Apple sometime this year.

It's a shitty standard but given how shitty SMS is, I'm willing to hold my nose and jump in.

InvaderDJ ,

It's why I cancelled last year. I got it for free through my FIOS Internet connection for a few years, but after that went away I paid for a year. But the price increase was just not worth the like 2 shows and maybe one movie that I watched on it a year.

InvaderDJ ,

Yeah, I can't imagine what about Graphene would make that big of a difference. Smart phones and slabs of glass with apps on them. There's very little that truly impacts the experience after you get past specs.

InvaderDJ ,

Use what you like. Just like Windows, macOS and Linux for the vast majority of people, all these OSes are, are platforms to display apps and webpages. They all have sanded off most of the rough edges meaning that unless you have specific niche needs/wants, you'll just use what is familar and be happy.

Life is too short to have deep feelings about an OS.

InvaderDJ ,

You need good software to make the most out of good hardware, but I think our definition of good is different. For software, as long as the software doesn't get in the way of launching the app you want, most normies will consider that good. It doesn't matter that Android is bloated and inefficient if the user can tap the Instagram or Facebook icon and have that open up without user perceptible delay.

The average person is remarkably able to put up with shit. Look at the experience on smart TVs for example. The vast majority of people are fine with the absolutely shitty experience as long as they can open up Netflix.

InvaderDJ ,

Via context clues I think this means conversations that have a high likelyhood of buying something.

Like a thread asking for a phone recommendation is likely going to end in a sale. But it's written by a PR drone and thus doesn't look like English.

InvaderDJ ,

The break down of the content isn't my biggest issue. The problem is that there just isn't enough content.

Thankfully some mobile apps besides the official still work and Old Reddit still works on desktop.

InvaderDJ ,

It has definitely become more noticeable on Reddit that huge numbers of either compromised or sold accounts are being used by bots to sell shit. They are in basically every thread now, getting upvoted to appear more legit until someone calls them out and they delete their content.

Reddit is definitely on the way down. And a decent amount along the way. But unfortunately, it still is the best option for a modern day message board. I want to use Lemmy more, but there just isn't enough content being posted by enough people.

InvaderDJ ,

That's a principled stance.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

InvaderDJ ,

To be fair, this is just a patent, not Roku saying they will do this. But if they do, then absolutely.

InvaderDJ ,

If Roku actually does this I would definitely never use them again. Completely asinine behavior. Especially because most people aren't even using stand alone boxes with their smart TVs.

InvaderDJ ,

I had to tell my dad this and I think it stun locked him for a minute. He complained about some "millennial" college student and I had to tell him that millenials are like 40 now. Not college students.

InvaderDJ ,

Not a smart move, right before the IPO.

Really? I think the opposite. He said this in a profoundly stupid way, but what he is saying is that reddit is still the largest collection of human generated content. And not just the sanitized stuff you post on Facebook or LinkedIn, but your actual political opinions, your fears, your hobbies, the totally real secrets you posted to the weekly "What is your darkest secret" AskReddit post, your porn preferences, etc. And that is likely very valuable.

InvaderDJ ,

Proving all of it is authentic would be difficult, but I don't think that is necessary. It isn't really disputed that reddit is the largest repository of human generated content currently. It was one of the reasons the whole reddit protest thing was even as big as it was, because when the reddit results left Google, searching for real information from people became a lot harder

InvaderDJ ,

Compassion is definitely needed here the user shouldn't be blamed.

But it is also true that essentially every smart TV is garbage. Never connect them to the internet or use their built in software. Something like an Apple TV will be faster, provide a better experience and be easier to use than any smart TV. Same with something like the nVidia Shield.

InvaderDJ ,

What it was the end of was talentless painters who were just copying what they saw. Painting stopped being for service and started being for art. That is where software development is going.

I think a better way of saying this are people who were just doing it for a job, not because of a lot of talent or passion for painting.

But doing something just because it is a job is what a lot of people have to do to survive. Not everyone can have a profession that they love and have a passion for.

That's where the problem comes in when it comes to these generative AI.

InvaderDJ ,

This is nothing new. Buying digital and streaming only versions of media just means you are licensing it. If you care, either break the DRM and reencode, or just pirate it directly.

InvaderDJ ,

The people who buy something like this (hopefully) have enough money where $3,500 doesn't matter or are developers who want to get in early on something that might be big in a few versions.

Everyone else should avoid.

InvaderDJ ,

Imagine both the annoyance and job security having to manage MS-DOS and 3.1 systems for a railroad would entail.

InvaderDJ ,

I'd be fine with this argument if these generative tools were only being used by non-profits. But they aren't.

So I think there has to be some compromise here. Some type of licensing fee should be paid by these generative AI tools.

InvaderDJ ,

I'm arguing for free commercial use being illegal, absolutely.

And that fee should scale based on who is using it for commercial purposes. Microsoft and Google should be paying far, far out the ass for their data.

InvaderDJ ,

Do you mean the whole thing or something specific like free commercial use being illegal?

I think the answer to both are the people who created the art, text, etc that these generative AI tools are going to make mostly obsolete.

InvaderDJ ,

Honestly, I don't know how any end user who doesn't understand IT and wasn't around before services like Cloudflare were available can say this. They objectively don't have the information or experience to make the claim.

InvaderDJ ,

Have you ever self hosted a website? Was that a modern website, or just a bunch of text? Are you experienced with uptime SLAs on multiple services? Have you ever had to deal with a DDOS attack?

There are lots of things that Cloudflare does that requires experience and knowledge to notice or understand. And it isn't even the biggest single point of failure when it comes to the Internet. When AWS has an outage for instance there is a huge chunk of the Internet that goes down.

There are problems with the centralization of the Internet. But this happened for a reason, and it has been so long and these services have been so reliable that people don't even realize what it was like before.
