Lemmchen ,

I was on of their strongest advocates, but their progress is unbearably slow. SimpleX for example has advanced a lot more in the same timeframe.
To me it seems like at the current pace they will need another two to three years to solve their problems.

Lemmchen ,

The title could use the word "router" somewhere.

Lemmchen ,

I'm sure asuswrt-merlin won't have this nonsense.

Lemmchen ,

Do you mean modems?

Lemmchen OP ,

Consumer CPUs were lacking ECC reporting, so you never really knew if ECC was correcting errors or not.

Lemmchen ,

Tox has pretty much been dead from the beginning. There never was a significant user base.

Lemmchen ,

And a person claimed in a later post that “around 300” of their old pictures, some of which were “revealing,” appeared on an iPad they’d wiped per Apple’s guidelines and sold to a friend.

How would that even work? Wiping a device resets the encryption keys, doesn't it?

Lemmchen ,

Both seem equally improbable.

How to fix my Coturn setup?

I've set up my homeserver via matrix-docker-ansible-deploy, but made the mistake of using my domain as ansible_host variable at first. I think that is why now my Coturn server doesn't work as intended. Calls can only be made (in Element) when I enable turn.matrix.org as an alternative in the settings....

Lemmchen OP ,

If this was the case, the playbook would surely set up two different Coturn instances. Also, I don't understand why it would work that way.
My setup is not a "special usecase", but a single unfederated homeserver. Calls do not work between users unless turn.matrix.org is enabled.

Lemmchen OP ,

The homeserver incl. Coturn is running on a VPS, no ports blocked.
The clients are in different networks. Everything should just work, but it doesn't for some reason.

Lemmchen OP ,

Did you try to test your coturn

The test correctly gathers the srflx candidates, so STUN should be working. But I can't get it to find relay candidates, so I guess TURN isn't?

Lemmchen OP ,

Element X works, but does it really require Sliding Sync?

Lemmchen OP ,

Not really, it simply indicates that it delegates the traffic to the sliding sync proxy. It does not indicate whether this proxy works correctly.

Lemmchen ,

There's a way to run the client on Linux now? Awesome!

Lemmchen ,

but Bitcoin does nothing to prevent custodial exchanges, in the way something like Monero does

In what way does Monero prevent that?

Lemmchen ,

Shit, this kinda screws with my plans to use the A380 as a transcoding card for my server.

Lemmchen ,

I don't see how this is relevant to this at all.

Lemmchen ,

Our data includes anonymized API calls to traditional search indexes like Google, Yandex, Mojeek and Brave, specialized search engines like Marginalia, and sources of vertical information like Wolfram Alpha, Apple, Wikipedia, Open Meteo, Yelp, TripAdvisor and other APIs

I don't want to be that guy, but technically they said they are using traditional indexes like Google, not that they are in fact using Google. But I guess that is splitting hairs.
Also, maybe they just dropped Google from their indexes? And what's more: Why does it matter if they are using Google at all, when the results are satisfying?

Knowing which indexes they are using exactly would be nice to know, though.

How does it compare to Jitsi?

Lemmchen ,

I'd recommend to go with some form of mini PC. If you don't need much CPU power there are some very cheap N100 ones where you can upgrade the RAM.

Lemmchen ,

Yes, the only real drawback is the single channel memory connection, but that's rarely a bottleneck.

Lemmchen ,

Anything with a hardware decoder for the formats supported by Jellyfin. So, basically anything.

Lemmchen ,

Is there an AMD equivalent of the N100?

Lemmchen ,

From the ones you mentioned only Matrix supports full E2EE.

Lemmchen ,

If you need E2EE there's only Matrix. I wish it wasn't the only option, but it is. For setting up rooms and so on you can use their Spaces feature, I think.

I've been looking for an alternative, too: https://feddit.de/post/8502516

Am I the only one thinking Lori comes across as a bit of a dick here?

    Lemmchen ,

We're just vocal because we've been suffering over the enshittification of Google search for so long.

    Lemmchen ,

Okay, but are they still releasing updates via other channels? The newest version on their website is 3.5.4, the same that I got through the play store.

    Lemmchen ,

Something like Immich or PhotoPrism is probably the way to go.

    Lemmchen , (edited )

That's not so much a filter bubble as it is noise reduction. No, I don't want to have Pinterest results in my search engine. No, I don't have an Instagram or Twitter account and therefore can't see the content there anyway. I am developer, so I want to raise the relevance of GitHub in my results.

    Lemmchen , (edited )

That is not what Ethnicity is.

You can not enable the "feature" to keep search history. The slider stays disabled when you try.

    How should I host Handbrake?

I'm currently using Handbrake on a windows 11 installation of a desktop computer. I am planning on turning this desktop computer into a NAS and media server to replace my current raspberry pi 4 system. Handbrake works great on this computer, but I was wondering how I could use Handbrake on this system after I convert it into a...

    Lemmchen OP ,

    I wrote this integration

Oh, nice! I can make a video later on how it looks on my machine. I even tried fiddling with the registry to force them to be opened with RocketChat, but that didn't work either.

    Lemmchen OP ,

There isn't really a premise per se as we are a decentralized team, but the details don't really matter.

    Lemmchen OP ,

What do you mean by “independent clients” - multi device login?

Yeah. Right now you have to have Signal running and connected on a phone. If the phone is off or not connected to the internet, you can't use the Desktop client.

    Wire

    https://wire.com/en/app-download
Latest Linux release is from December 2022. That's unacceptable.

    Lemmchen OP , (edited )

I've made some screenshots instead of a video. I hope you still get what the issue is.

At the end there is no usuable call from the RocketChat client. But I can copy the meet.jit.si URL and open it in a browser.

Originally I had an error message telling me that Windows doesn't know what to do with jitsi-meet:// links, but that doesn't show up anymore for some reason. Maybe because of me messing with the registry to solve the issue, but I've actually removed the registry key I had created before.

    Lemmchen OP ,

Yeah, it's sad to see it in Zoom's hands, but it is still open source and receiving updates.
