I hate this recommendation because Matrix is just a terrible user experience. It has basically nothing of value over Discord other than being open source. Which is important but it's not enough to counteract the amount of basic quality of life stuff that is just absolutely trash garbage on Matrix. Stuff that no normal user is going to put up with.

If Discord does end up completely eviscerating itself the replacement will just be some new upstart closed Source program that is shiny just like how Discord took over from Slack it will not be the rise of Open Source because open source developers have no concept of user experience.

I mean we don't even need to start talking about how bad all the client options are and how half the features don't work and all that. You can look no further than the login system. Average users do not like want or accept having multiple options for logging in. There's a reason that irc, teamspeak, mumble despite in many ways being objectively Superior especially in the case of the voice chats ended up relegated to only nerds like us. Because no one else is willing to deal with keeping track of servers to connect with or how to cross join or add users.

Same reason that Lemmy is like 90% technical users that are already invested in something like Linux. The average user got frustrated by how fragmented everything is how many duplicate channels and content you would find between instances and how difficult it was to search instances in the first place. I am here because I can ultimately work around those emoians, but the average person? Is not willing to and they shouldn't have to

LordKitsuna ,

I mean with next cloud and immich it doesn't really matter if they are popular. Those are services that you host for yourself for you to use generally by yourself.

Immich I could see someone using if they're already familiar with Google photos, so long as someone else handled the setup and maintenance of it of course

LordKitsuna ,

Anyone know the original source for the frame?

LordKitsuna ,

Damn nice find that's the one alright

LordKitsuna ,

To be fair you should be using wire guard then. Because multiple of the largest and most well-known security auditing firms in the world have said that openvpn is impossible to truly audit. It's too large, you can audit individual parts of it, and you can audit individual interactions between parts. But it's not possible to fully audit.

Meanwhile wireguard is quite small so it can be fairly easily audited by a small team and has been multiple times

LordKitsuna ,

You can wrap it into https with nginx if you wanna get super fancy so it just looks like web traffic even with dpi. Takes a latency and speed hit but it works

LordKitsuna ,

Yeah it's honestly quite impressive. Software developers have managed to take orders of magnitudes of Hardware improvements over the years and keep Pace ensuring that software still runs like complete utter trash garbage

LordKitsuna ,

Linux has been a fully working on arm for much longer than Windows so there's that

LordKitsuna ,

Ah well, Firefox definitely has a Windows arm native build available on their website but yeah most applications certainly won't

LordKitsuna ,

And there's not even really anything you can do about it. Reverse osmosis should be able to get rid of microplastics but the fucking containers for the filters are plastic and the lines running between them are plastic so they're just going to reintroduce microplastics even after filtering!

There was a recent study showing that boiling water could actually break down and remove a surprising number of microplastics so I guess for making tea you might be a little better off but still

LordKitsuna ,

obviously still better than not doing it but it's just annoying and frustrating because they don't make any out of stainless steel construction at least not that I can find. I was able to get stainless steel food grade corrugated piping because they use it in the Solar industry for solar hot water heating. Finding true stainless steel faucets instead of just stainless coated brass is possible although a little bit expensive. I've gone stainless for pretty much everything in the kitchen, including reusable straws as well as leftover food containers both the container and the lid. Because it seems to be basically the only material not actively attempting to kill us in some way.

So it's not as if I'm not actively reducing my exposure to it as much as possible, but it's really frustrating how impossible it is to escape from entirely

LordKitsuna ,

The metal grid is nowhere near fine enough for microplastics. It's like trying to filter out a car through gaps the size of the grand canyon

LordKitsuna ,

Here's an actual good one "i just miss when it was possible to buy a house with a single income at minimum wage"

LordKitsuna ,

Nothing, that's the point. The comic is trying to make it look as though there is nothing from the olden days that was better I'm simply pointing out that I can also cherry pick examples

LordKitsuna ,

I just wish it would stabilize. I've been using it but half the time indo a docker-compose pull it breaks

LordKitsuna ,

Gonna have to disagree. Telegram is the ONLY chat app with ACTUALLY NATIVE code clients on desktop and mobile. Its the only one that isn't website in a box trash that's slow heavy and buggy. I use discord mostly because it's where everyone is but i fucking hate everything about it and wish people would use telegram.

If you think other chat apps don't read/process metadata from your dms and such your an idiot. Nothing is safe short of self hosted matrix with full E2E encryption or similar and ain't nobody doing that.

Cutout.Pro, an AI-powered visual design platform, leaked 20M records, including email and IP addresses, names and salted MD5 password hashes, which have then been broadly distributed. (haveibeenpwned.com)

Haha, brand new company with MD5 password hashes. Maybe they oughta consult about securities with their/other AIs more often. Hopefully, nobody did anything naughty on the site....

LordKitsuna ,

Feels like just a roundabout an exceptionally more difficult way to achieve a strong password versus just a password manager. Where you can do ridiculous things like have a 100 character long password

Only to discover that the website will accept 100 characters in the box but actually truncate it to like 40 without telling you

LordKitsuna ,

I hate that the article uses the word hack, as it implies some type of control. The only thing this is doing is sending the specific device a bunch of junk data so it can't receive its actual data

LordKitsuna ,

Just open htop, find the process you wish to kill. Press F9,9,enter.

LordKitsuna ,

Well, not to be that guy but given your specific example of a dryer there is a way you can get over half the way there. Get a heatpump dryer. They use 1/4th the amount of electricity as a standard electric dryer and can literally be plugged into a standard 110v 15A outlet they don't need the big ass 220v 50a plug. Heavy items like thick beach towels take a bit longer but otherwise they function identically

LordKitsuna ,

I mean even those generators are only bought out of a lack of understanding. Really easy to get 6kW home inverters, and they are stackable. Some systems will stack up to 16 units. Thats 96kW, or said another way 400 amps of 240V.

A setup of dual 6k isn't even that expensive anymore and 12kW is enough for most people to just use appliances like normal without worry. Grab a couple of the low hanging fruit efficiency changes like heat pump for both your dryer and hot water heater and your golden.

The only other mistake people make is they size how many panels they need based off the potential maximum rather than the potential minimum. You should oversize your array for summer so that it is appropriately sized for cloudy/winter :)

LordKitsuna ,

That's definitely a unique mounting circumstance, I'm very curious why specifically upside down mounting

LordKitsuna ,

Is it like a top load washer or something? I have the melee heat pump dryer and the matching washing machine and they come with a stacking kit. I don't need to flip it upside down because all the controls are on the front anyway rather than the top

They are quite compact, as I am using them in an RV at the moment so I needed something capable of fitting through a 24 inch door and those were just fucking barely able to do it at 23 and a quarter inch

LordKitsuna ,

Ziply fiber ONT have a little battery on them for exactly this. Seems to last around 4 hours in my experience. Seems reasonable to me.

LordKitsuna ,

Ziply ONT does the fiber translation and just spits out ethernet which you can plug into anything you want. I use it with a little 4port 2.5G router box and opensense. So I've just got a basic APC UPS for my router to keep it alive as well

LordKitsuna ,

Nah they just merged the basic modem functions into the ONT it seems. Just enough for ethernet

LordKitsuna ,

The problem is that Americans pay both taxes and these outrageous rates for medical. People throw around the oh it's just in your taxes as if Americans don't also pay taxes. Ours just get wasted on useless fucking defense contracts

LordKitsuna ,

It's very helpful. You can cook chicken with sous vide (hot water with temperature held very precise) and cook the chicken at 140 35min. Because it's a bath of precisely controlled water the temperature will never go above 140 and you will have insanely juicy chicken that is still safe

LordKitsuna ,

Make sure it's sending to the correct port, if you go into the audio device management of whatever your desktop environment of choice was you should notice that you have the advanced options on the HDMI to select which HDMI port it's going to

LordKitsuna ,

It partially depends on the store. I have found that Walmart and Fred Meyer have some of the worst fucking software in existence and it's guaranteed I will have an issue when I go there. But I've never once had an issue with the Costco machines, WinCo machines, or Safeway machines. I am able to go through self-checkout even with an extremely large cart and get through it without any assistance.

And I fucking love it, it's faster, it's easier, and honestly when I'm shopping I'm usually tired and don't want to interact with anyone as it's the last chore I will do at the end of a long day of various tasks to do

LordKitsuna ,

Is there something weird about how your Home Depot did it? I absolutely love the self-checkout at the Home Depots in my state. They all have the wireless hand scanners so I just pull my cart up, beep beep beep beep beep beep beep and off I go I fucking hated before they had self checkout at Home Depots it always took for fucking ever now I'm in and out regardless of whether I need one thing or 20 things

LordKitsuna ,

Maybe it is just the customers in your area, mine is usually not backed up. I don't have any problem with the various loose items there is always a barcode somewhere and if I don't see one on the product I'll take a picture of the one on the Shelf so I can just scan it right off my phone at the checkout¯\_(ツ)_/¯

LordKitsuna ,

I didn't realize that next Cloud was so bad, might I recommend people having issues try Seafile? Also open source and I've been using it for many years without issues. It doesn't have as many features and it doesn't look as shiny but it's rock solid

Have a random meme from my instance

LordKitsuna ,

Let me encourage you to attempt deep water hydroponic growing of those tomatoes. Easiest fucking thing I've ever done, I only have to check them once a week to refill the water other than that I don't do shit and I get nice large cherry tomato harvests.

You basically just need a large barrel or bucket, an air pump, and a little air Stone from like a fish tank or something. Plant goes into the water air bubbler goes down so that the roots don't drown mix in some hydroponic nutrients and you're done sit back and ignore it

LordKitsuna ,

yes very, and the plant grows like fucking crazy. Tomatoes in particular have always been a high water plant so putting them in a literal bucket of it they are quite happy

LordKitsuna ,

If you do it outside good old sunlight is just fine if you want to grow indoors any LED grow light should be sufficient although tomatoes do like a lot of light so you may need a few of them if you decide to go with indoor growing.

You also want to make sure that as little light as possible gets down into the bucket of water to avoid stuff like algae growth. But that's a simple as wrapping your bucket in some nice cheap tin foil keeps the light out, helps keep the water temperature stable, and even reflect some light back up to your plant so that it can get more
