There are a lot of different things, I suggest to look it up for the accurate details. However the most sketchy thing is that it's owned by Kape Technologies, previously known Crossrider something.. Who helped distribute malware through their frameworks. On top of that, one of the employees have had connections to the UAE, and got caught, but still works there...???

That's just the gist, and it's some crazy stuff... Any VPN owned by Kape Technologies you should stay far away from.

(yes restoreprivacy isn't a great source either, but it sums it up well enough)

Believe you can also remove the stock launcher on the Nvidia Shield. Have not done it myself, but have also never had my launcher automatically change like you mention. I'm using ProjectIvy🌻

Ah my bad, it doesn't have that itself, however: there is Thunderbird 🐦

doubt she'll get any more from stepping down... but yeah it's ridiculous how much some of these CEOs think they need. Especially in a company that is supposed to be better...

LunchEnjoyer OP ,

Believe that most people here on this platform would agree with you on that, consider your rant redeemed :)

Mozilla has a podcast?

Edit: Yes they have!
https://irlpodcast.org/

Assuming you meant that they talked about this topic in one of their podcasts? Would you mind sharing which episode they did that in?

This is the way

Premium is only needed for some more niche settings, not setting as default launcher.

LunchEnjoyer ,

Absolutely, totally worth the 7 euros nonetheless!

Have absolutely fallen in love with this blog posts! Just downloaded Twine to test it out, seems very basic as of yet, but will give it a week or two of testing 🌻

Although correct, there feature set is amazing and expanding. Tailscale is my number one tool of choice, these days, it's so simple and so handy.

LunchEnjoyer ,

Since nobody else asked about this, why ruTorrent over the other typical download clients?

LunchEnjoyer ,

Ahh I'm not too familiar with seedboxes, thanks 🌻

Any duck duck go alternative that is better in privacy and security ?

I have always liked and used Duck duck go more than google but now i am considering if i should switch because of the shit they pulled with their app and yesterday when i clicked a link it took me directly to their newsletter subsciption page not even like a popup a proper page without any way except manually backing out . So is...

I believe this is old news now? Heard someone else say that they don't do it any longer. Might have to look into this for some updated clearance myself too.

LunchEnjoyer ,

Just wanted to chip in and say, what a great comment! 👌

LunchEnjoyer ,

Tailscale is my favourite tool of all, just makes life so much more simple!

No issues with Freetube here either, never had any either. Running most things on defaults.

This is so fascinating and cool at the same time, crazy how things work around us!

Note: I use droid-ify, another client for Fdroid, but personally prefer this one as I can easily add other necessary repositories that add even more apps to the store front.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.. But can this be used for profile pictures on social media too? That way if your profile picture is scrapped by some bot it will just poison the set instead?

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I've been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I'm looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will also...

NextDNS is awesome if you want the simple solution, and don't have any hardware to install services on. Thee free version is somehwta limited to queries(300k per month), but personally didn't hit those when I was using the free tier.

NextDNS has a lot of nice customization and can easily had custom block lists. The pro version is 2euros a month I believe. I personally stick with NextDNS due to never having to worry about updating the service and it always just works. I also have it hooked to my Tailnet, that way all my devices use it by default.

But ofc, Pihole, Adguard and the rest are also awesome. Best to just pick one that looks good for you. The end goal here is to just have something running in the background rather than nothing.

I believe it's more about what you do to the system, than about each box you can buy.

I have not heard of any one android TV box being more privacy respecting than others. In the end they're all running Android TV. However there are a bunch of things you can do to debloat your system to minimise processes etc... Y nvidia shield at least let's me disable any system app I want. You can ofc sideloads apps, for example you can:

  • Projectivy Launcher, instead of stock launcher. This launcher looks alot better and also avoids the new fullscreen ads.
  • SmartTube, instead of YouTube. It's YT but without ads and has sponsor block.

If you want true privacy than you're gonna want a Linux PC of any sort connected to the TV instead.

LunchEnjoyer ,

Never heard of this one before, looks like a really neat project!
