Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box (lemmy.world)

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

NaoPb ,

I actually prefer the eth0 and wlan0.

Colonoscopy itself is not that bad. They can sedate you so you don't have to experience the procedure.

The preparation is not so great with the bad tasting lemonade and then going to the toilet for a long time. But suffering through that is worth it compared to not knowing if you have cancer.

NaoPb ,

For God sakes, Bender, keep dancing!

NaoPb ,

I don't know who Jettison Canopy is but I hope he's around when you need to do this.

NaoPb ,

And if you're talking about all of those in general, it's just Linux.

NaoPb ,

Because it's being pedantic and it's being wrong. And that's annoying.

Software is not named by the compiler used or the tools included in the end package.

NaoPb ,

Don't you confuse people with your open os'es by calling them free. No charge is the only real free.

NaoPb ,

I'm just running Linux. Or for the Linux people it's KDE Plasma. Or Ubuntu with LXDE. Or degoogled Android. Or whatever, these are examples.

NaoPb ,

I didn't know there was a mailman living in my computer screen.

NaoPb ,

I am wondering how many people give up because their exact program isn't on there.

I get having to use Adobe software if you are an industry professional, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about people who don't want to change because qbittorrent is not the same as utorrent. Or peazip is different than 7zip.

NaoPb ,

I haven't seen utorrent on linux or 7zip with the gui integration like it has in windows. That was my example.

NaoPb ,

Have you ever been driven the Desert Bus from Tucson to Las Vegas on that Genesis game?

NaoPb ,

Don't forget the "actually, it's GNU/Linux" nerds

NaoPb ,

Would be nice if we could reroute traffic to somewhere else.

NaoPb ,

From your webpage: Privacy because protects our freedom to be who we are.

I think a word is missing in that sentence.

NaoPb ,

You remind me of something different but related. I noticed in Windows 98 that it would store a different setting for BMP wallpapers. And BMP wallpapers would also load in faster. So when you first set a BMP wallpaper, and then change it to a JPEG, it would remembrr both of threm. And it will still briefly display the BMP one on startup before it loads the JPEG one.

NaoPb ,

What is the meaning of life? What are we doing it for?

NaoPb ,

Out of all those I only use WhatsApp, Lemmy and an Internet Browser. I guess a real dumb phone is out of the question for me. Though I could do with something smaller (not too small) and cheaper.

NaoPb ,

The reviews of the Jelly series seem to conveniently leave out how it is to type on.
I would like that size but I need to be able to type a casual whatsapp message every once in a while or add an appointment to my calendar.

I am considering buying something cheap and (relatively) small from AliExpress to see how that works and if it's a size I like. I'd hate to spend Unihertz prices only to find out it's too small for me.

NaoPb ,

I see you and me are looking for a similar phone. I want to be able to comfortably hold and use it with one hand.

As someone else mentioned Unihertz makes some smaller phones that aren't limited in specs but some may be too small for my tastes. I am still looking to see what would be a good size since I want to be able to type on it with some comfort.

NaoPb ,

I am still very stuck with typing with two thumbs like I did on my BlackBerry.

NaoPb ,

Why not just use a rake and a broom?

NaoPb ,

I didn't say you had to do it all on your own.

NaoPb ,

What parties should we vote for to make sure they keep protecting consumers?

NaoPb ,

I really liked winamp when my screen resolution wasn't so high. I wish the interface could scale so I can still use the original look without having to squint.

NaoPb ,

Thank you!!

NaoPb ,

This is why I'm looking for a dumb phone. Too much time wasted on doomscrolling.

NaoPb ,

I was thinking about this after posting my comment.

I have some phones laying around that I can try to install a different OS on.

NaoPb ,

They were on their way killing their phone line for a long time before that. They shouldn't have stuck with Symbian for so long.

NaoPb ,

Have you tried Trinity instead of LXDE?

With Q4OS for example.

NaoPb ,

I honestly don't know about that.

Can you maybe recommend something that is similar but might be still updated? I really like how KDE used to look back then but I missed out on it.
The way most new desktops copy the flat look of Windows and Mac OS annoys me. I want the details back and like my window has sides and shadows.

NaoPb ,

Thanks for reminding me about LXQt. Back then it didn't really have all the features that LXDE used to have, but it does seem to have matured a bit.

NaoPb ,

Glad to read we are thinking alike about these things.

I see there are some nice themes at the place you've linked. If those work with KDE Plasma, that would certainly be interesting to give a try.

I'll have a look at that.

NaoPb ,

I do remember the free tier being introduced at some point. But it was a really long time ago. Probably 10+ years. I was still on XP back then.

NaoPb ,

Are you talking about OpenSUSE?

NaoPb ,

If you include 98SE you should also include 8.1. Or include neither. But then it wouldn't make sense anymore.

NaoPb ,

I've honestly haven't had any problems with XP SP1. I've had it on a couple computers back in the day. I remember that the upgrade to SP2 wouldn't always go well. Sometimes requiring a reinstall.

NaoPb ,

Ah yes. MicroCanonicalSoft. Ubuntu used to be great. But they are working hard to ruin it.

I am currently looking for an alternative that has a similar allround-ish support for hardware. Ubuntu supports my Macbook and my Acer Tablet out of the box while others do not competely do so. I could write a whole rant about the tablet with 64-bit processor but 32-bit eufi bios and intel processor that kinda obscures access to the audio and wifi devices unless you use a specific driver.

I'd prefer something debian based but I can't stand flicking in video playback or scrolling through a webpage. Which is why I like Wayland at the moment, since it fixes those things.
