Plopp ,

Oh, a CPU that straight up expires? A product that comes with enshittification built in from the start? Corporations' mouths are watering as we speak.

Plopp ,

Pff, the enshittification of life would be if it just kept on going. Thankfully the misery will end at some point.

Plopp ,

I have the old one (5.x) installed and use it regularly. Is it still available for download anywhere? Would love for that one to be officially open sourced.

Plopp ,

Oh, now that is interesting. Thank you for that piece of information!

Plopp ,

I can validate. I've never heard of either one before.

Plopp ,

One thing those old ones did was have conversations in their own windows. I much prefer that over having to navigate back and forth in the same damn window to jump between convos.

Plopp ,

"Besides, the more incorrect answers - the more time users will spend on our site and use our service to get the correct answer = more ads shown = more profit!"

Plopp ,
Plopp ,

Is this a meme? Every time I've seen someone use fetch there's always someone telling them to stop trying to make it a thing. I love it either way and I will henceforth do my part.

Plopp ,

I see! Thank you for expanding my knowledge. That's kinda fetch of you.

Plopp ,

You get ads?

Plopp ,

Those assumptions and deliberately disregarding what the user wants and replacing it with something that makes Google more money makes it such an astoundingly bad experience. But Bing and DDG somehow still give way worse results ime.

Plopp ,

Is there a way to add the udm=14 trick to the !g bang on DDG?

Plopp ,

You know sometimes books are about things that happened in the past.

Only if the book has pictures in it. Otherwise those things didn't happen.

Plopp ,

They should capitalize on this and just release a cheese flavored glue.

Plopp ,

How about making the signal so weak that you have to put the key inside a hole in the car for it to work?

Plopp ,

Easy fix:

  1. "Sorry, we no longer offer a T-Mobile ONE plan, therefore your plan has been converted to a regular T-Mobile plan. If you object to this you may terminate your account."

  2. "Due to increased costs and a whole bunch of reasons that has absolutely nothing to do with our greed we will have to raise the price of our regular plan."

Plopp ,

I've got some chores that need to get done, how much can I rent your guys for?

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Plopp ,

I have always asked me when this would happen.

Well, what did you say?

Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed Decline (www.techdirt.com)

Is Google signaling the end of the open web? That’s some of the concern raised by its new embrace of AI. While most of the fears about AI may be overblown, this one could be legit. But it doesn’t mean that we need to accept it....

Plopp ,

Don't be so sure. Google has ridiculous power over the internet. Worst case we might have to create a new network. But I hope we will if it's necessary.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

Plopp ,

Surely it'll be supported on desktop Windows once Windows 10 is released?

Plopp ,

You do enterprise resource planning with AI hallucinations?

Plopp ,

Coincidentally, I remember starting using that site in 2014 or 2015.

Plopp ,

You should check out the federated backup of Apple Cloud. You can reach it at lemmynsfw.com. I mean your friend.

Plopp ,

Is it that bad? I've been making a habit of blocking every community that shows up that I don't want to see. So these days I rarely see stuff I really don't want to see.

Plopp ,

In that case just subscribe to the 15 you want to see then?

Plopp ,

With AI it just seems pointless. I'm not teaching it anything it doesn't already know of and I'm painfully aware that it just pretends to be interested.

But with a proper AI assistant/friend that runs locally in your own home and doesn't share data with a corporation I'd look at it as me rambling about things isn't me teaching the assistant about the topic at hand, but about me. What I know, what I like, am passionate about etc. And from that I'd then expect more exciting interactions from the assistant in the future. Like it after having crawled the web all of a sudden say "hey did you read about the new study on [topic I'm interesting in and has gone on about]?" and then proceeds to tell me about it after I say that I haven't.

Plopp ,

But that leaves a lot of good code. The bad parts are very unlikely to appear in the AI results due to the amount of good code in the training set.

Plopp ,

Maybe in a near future you'll once again be able to upgrade your laptop RAM whenever you want. The current trend is for RAM to more and more be soldered onto the motherboard which prevents you from upgrading it.

Plopp ,

Personally I'm surprised that there are so few non-full-body-movement games. It's amazing to sit down and play whatever game in a completely different 3D world. Moss is a great platformer in VR, pinball games are really cool in VR, and driving sims with a wheel and pedals kick absolut ass in VR. I bet games like FIFA, NBA, NHL etc would be amazing, top down car games would be amazing etc etc.

Plopp ,

Well what I'm saying is there should be more "less full" VR games. VR could be a somewhat simple add-on to many types of games. The difficult thing with VR is the object interaction, the handling of resources etc. if you're in a large 1:1 world, but if you're implement VR as basically just an extra viewport it's not that difficult (for many types of games that are not FPS) and it could still add a lot to the game. Or you can do something like Moss, which is a really cool game.

Plopp , (edited )

Granted I have only watched maybe 20 videos of his, but he's covered topics that frustrate and anger him, and on the contrary he's always been very calm and collected for someone speaking off the cuff about things that makes them upset.

Plopp ,

I know I'm old school and all that, but why do people want to pay for automatically closing doors of any kind? Automatic opening of cargo spaces I get, if you have your bags full of hands or whatever, but once you put the stuff in there... Seem like such an incredibly unnecessary and costly feature, that also have a high chance of failing in the future. I don't get it.

Plopp ,

I get it's nice to have, and if it somehow cost nothing I wouldn't mind having it in a car, if it's pretty much guaranteed that when it fails it doesn't prevent me from open/close manually. But I'd much rather not pay for neither the R&D, engineering, parts and manufacturing of it, only to end up with a more complex door mechanism that is more expensive to repair and more likely to break. When all it does is give me the slightest of conveniences. Best example of this is the motorized charging port lid on the Rivian. Like, whyyyy? Cheaper and longer lasting vehicles, please.

Plopp ,

I'm so addicted to YouTube it's gonna be a very rough time when I can no longer watch without ads, because I'm sure as hell not watching ads.

Plopp ,

But where did the $2k phones for sub $1000 go? They're all like twice as expensive.

Plopp ,

You make it sound as if artists could get compensated properly on Spotify if some more people paid for premium.

Plopp ,

Granted I haven't used Spotify for anything but an alarm clock ever since I canceled my premium a year ago, but what censorship are you talking about? 80% of my listening time before I quit was rap and I can assure you, there was a lot of bad language. Most albums and singles that have clean versions have a dirty version as well. Back in the day, clean and dirty were listed as separate albums, but they changed it so that it's one listing and you have to somehow pick which version you want to look at/listen to/add to playlists. But maybe they changed that again I don't know. I also vaguely remember there being a user setting for showing explicit content, but I'm not sure.

Plopp ,

How's the entire internet gonna fit in one Lemmy group?

Plopp ,

Daniel Ek, Kanye West, Jack Dorsey, Epic Games... What a great list. We need to start from scratch yall.

Plopp ,

Ok. That definitely sucks, but I wouldn't say that's Spotify censoring anything. It's just trash UX.

Plopp ,

And as a bonus, they (at least the Nokias and Ericssons) could be used as weapons.

Plopp ,

I wonder what it'll do to human reproduction rates when we have those.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

Plopp ,

Duck Duck Go is also complete trash these days, just in different ways.

Plopp ,

I sadly have none. I suffer with DDG and Google and my life is hell.

All the ways streaming services are aggravating their subscribers this week (arstechnica.com)

Below is a look at the most exasperating news from streaming services from this week. The scale of this article demonstrates how fast and frequently disappointing streaming news arises. Coincidentally, as we wrote this article, another price hike was announced....

Plopp ,

Worse for us. Better for the corporations.
