But if China sees chip making as a state asset, I wonder if, knowing this, they may now be able to prevent it.

Hmm

They were exceptionally difficult to find to install the app. That alone will keep them from being successful. Add to that that the app is not particularly impressive... I'm not sure if their chances.

Porque no los dos?

Biggest difference in my eyes is that with a layoff you at least get to choose who leaves but in this case you only lose the best and most qualified.

Nice work Dell.

I found this app that helps to mitigate this issue. It disables fingerprint if your phone gets too far away from a Bluetooth wearable or in several other conditions. It's worth looking into for sure though it is only in preview for now.

I think it's an excellent choice for anybody that's got to wearable. You could probably do all this with past or two if you had the free time, which I do not.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah. It's pretty rad. I've been playing with it all day.

If I set my watch and airplane mode it also immediately locks the phone, but it also does that when it goes out of range. It looks like the app should work with any Bluetooth device so any wearable should work just fine or even earphones if you really wanted.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

Neat! I wonder what the learning curve is like on that.

It's been 3 hours so I decided to go ahead and look for myself and I'm thinking perhaps they are talking about this:
https://www.pcmag.com/news/nordvpn-actually-we-do-comply-with-law-enforcement-data-requests

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

I agree with you. I am afraid that there's no way to really ban it. All you need is a VPN to bypass whatever they come up with. What concerns me is that this just makes it security theater and puts on display the government's ineptitude with technology.

This leaves me with the assumption that there is an ulterior motive that since this still sets precedent that though ineffective, they can misuse the precedent for nefarious ends.

Just look at how China restricts it's internet. Could that become us?

I do have anxiety about any limiting of free speech as well. That aspect of this situation is also concerning.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

I don't know, banning it from the app store would definitely reduce the number of users but if the app is already on the device it's not going anywhere. Plus it's a free app so at least with Android it's easy enough to side load it or get it from a website like APKPure or somewhere else. All you got to do is change a little setting and allow the installation of apps from unknown sources in your browser. This would have the effect of introducing whole new vectors for infection and compromise.

On the flip side I do see it as a legitimate national security threat so really it's a no-win situation.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

Not sure how many of them would try that. Most average people don't know how to use their phone, only how to use the services made for them. Or at least that's how I see it nowadays.

They're one YouTube video away from VPN and APKPure.

Google can remotely remove and install apps, even without user notice.

TIL. Time to think a little harder about de-googling.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

Maybe I'm too much of a goof but I haven't noticed any ads and I haven't found any way to turn them off either. Is this only in the desktop version or is it also in the mobile version? Normally I just use the mobile version.

Most likely an app updater written by someone who is too lazy to make their updater hidden.

As others suggested, look in task scheduler, but make sure you run it elevated. Focus on any updater that's calling an app from a bat file, and move out from there.

Quexotic ,
@Quexotic@beehaw.org avatar

Honestly it can be really tricky to keep that crap from popping up and if the guy that wrote the install did it all dirty and didn't hide his windows, calling a boatload of processes, it can be truly difficult for the guy that writes the updater to keep everything hidden.

I've been there.

Wait for the next update cycle. Lol. I've tracked these kinds of things down in the past. It's tough. Look into procmon and taskmon if it bugs you again, and godspeed my friend.

Including the ones already mentioned, oddly I can't find any internet radio apps in fdroid. Unexpected.

I may look into this. I would much rather pay developers that give a shit about the project then pay Evernote who is clearly just in it for the money and their devs have lost their way.

Thoughts on BOOX Tab Ultra C? (shop.boox.com)

Does anyone here have a BOOX e-paper tablet? I'm a big fan of e-paper devices—I love my Pebble smartwatch, Kindle Paperwhite, and Light Phone II. I've been eyeing the Tab Ultra C for quite a while, and I am considering the pros and cons. Mostly, I intend to use it for browsing the web and maybe some light note taking and...

I would only get one if it also had a backlit display. Preferably amber

This article has some useful considerations.

Happy shopping.

Samhain was co-opted (into all hallows eve) by Christians to convince more celts to convert, wasn't it?

Edit: I just realized I "well actually'd"... Sorry about that. LOL

It sounds like you're assuming that everything you put out there isn't already being stored.
