give up gaming

What? Most games run better on Linux

That's more of a you problem.

Using HA to start my work laptop

No major question here, just thought you might find this interesting. It's an example of the kind of (off-the-wall) things you can do with HA that aren't immediately obvious. When I was starting out with HA, I enjoyed reading these examples, because it gave me ideas for my own setup. And, I wrote many automations that should...

So all that effort to spare 1 watt of "suspend" power? Running home assistant all day long probably burns 500x that power.

I have to be missing some detail because that sounds absolutely insane in my head.

Normal people (idiots) would rather spend 4 years of their overall life "hacking" with Windows to avoid 30 minutes learning to use a forward slash.

That switches you to a phone app platform that hides the ads but records everything about you from your telemetry and sells it.

My Roku TV's been reset to factory and not allowed on the internet for a few years now. It's a TV. It displays shit that I give it over HDMI. If you desire more than that you're part of the problem.
I work in IT and that's why my home has physical locks, a 30 year old thermostat, and cameras I own with recordings on a DVR I own.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. That was why I originally bought the damned thing. Once I saw what it was doing on my network I decided "nope, that's enough from you" and reset it. I'm not saying people who also bought it and continue to use it as intended are dumb, I'm suggesting the device itself and what it does is evil.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Sure! I didn't know when I bought it that I'd come to this conclusion, but I learned over time. Been about 4 years or so since I bought it.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I've got hobbies that may not interest you, but I feel un-hindered by being off the big platforms. Different generation maybe.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Huh. I don't actually think I said any of that. Sorry I made you feel that way.

I take it back- I guess I did.

Yeah Wayland rules- problem for me is I'm hopelessly addicted to Synergy for mouse and keyboard sharing, and it doesn't work on Wayland yet><
I'm 100% team red and my fancy new display won't do 4k@144hz on X11 so that's frustrating. 144 and no Synergy or 1440p 144hz and Synergy

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Quite interesting- found it on github, so switching appears to be keybound with rkvm, huh?

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Alot less convenient than synergy but do-able. I may take the time to try to understand it in the future, appreciente the info.
I tweeted @synergy and they say a wayland-compatible version is due later this year, so there's a good chance I'll just wait and be lazy.

@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not even surprised any more. I take a bold guess at what absolutely hideous shit I'll read today and I'm still always surprised.

There's a word for software that does actions without the user's permission or knowledge.

That word is MALWARE

Do you trust Microsoft? If you do I might suggest we find you a nice quiet padded room.

Imagine someone attempted to (or even succeeded in) pushing malicious (or even just poor, "bad" code into the kernel. What do you suppose would happen?
Oh wait we don't have to imagine. Some people tried, and got admonished publicly.

I have a cheap "remote" for my PC, so I rarely use it for media or couch watching, BUT

Take ~50 photos

Get home

Two or three taps

Now they're all on my PC.
