Just because you click on it that doesn’t make it accurate.

Given the choice between clicks/engagement and accuracy, is pretty clear Google's for the former is what got us into this hell hole.

Visa Adds New Way To Share Customer Shopping Data With Retailers (www.businesswire.com)

Visa is rolling out new technology that will allow the payments giant to share more information about customers' preferences [non-paywalled source] based on their shopping history with retailers as it seeks to remain a top player in the competitive e-commerce space. From a report:...

I mean look you could just not use Visa right? We all have tons of other options, and they're totally not a monopoly right? That's why we're not regulating them, right?

Why every TOTP app default uses SHA-1 hash encryption?

I use Aegis as my 2fa. Today on new token creation I observed that there's hash function set to SHA-1, later checked all my tokens and the result is same type of encryption used for all. So I have edited all my tokens to SHA-256 as a result my totp doesn't authenticate. Do I have to rescan my tokens for updating to SHA-256 or...

capture the generated codes and time of input in some way, then brute force hashes until they generate one that produces the correct codes at x time

Given a TOTP key is usually at least 18 characters for a 6-digit code, having only one data point sticks you with something on the order of 10^28 possible keys for a given singular code (way more if case sensitive). You'd need to be regularly intercepting TOTP codes to brute force your way to the right key, and even then it'd only be valid for a single site. At that point it probably means you've fully compromised the connecting device or server, at which point, why do you even need the TOTP again?

But lets be honest, even Duck Duck Go is better than Google these days.

I hate to say it, because I love their privacy policy, but it we're being honest, it's not. DDG mostly uses Bing, and I struggle to find what I'm after on that engine. I have better results with Brave search, who now run their own index (but their tech bro CEO leaves me nervous at every turn)

I mean I disagree with most of what the person you're responding to is saying, but they are entering into a new stage of vehicular liability. By telling the driver they don't have to pay attention there is an implied transfer of liability.

It probably says somewhere in the terms of use that Mercedes isn't at fault or that you have to carry some special kind of insurance, and frankly computers have a pretty good shot at being better than your average human driver so they'll hopefully be easier to insure, but nevertheless, people on both sides of every accident for the first few years with this tech will sue. Any chance to squeeze a few milly out of a 100 billion dollar car company.

Okay how about Consumer Reports (an independent member-funded nonprofit), who put Kia/Hyundai at 10/11, admittedly showing Genesis much lower in the pack (18). Kia/Hyundai still beat out every American manufacturer on the list (not that its an overwhelmingly high bar).

They're definitely not perfect, but more middle of the road than older stigmas might have people believe.

RvTV95XBeo ,

Also, for better or worse, pause tells X "if you figure out how to fix this problem we might come back." Canceled says "go find someone else who is cool with Nazis."

Having that financial incentive dangling in a string might be more motivating for X to change. If they don't change of course, the net effect is the same as canceling.

RvTV95XBeo ,

Agreed, and I'll add, as an EV owner, none of the brands above them have anything resembling a respectable EV lineup, except maybe BMW, but that's being generous. Toyota, Honda, and their subsidiaries make great cars, but they've dragged their feet more than anyone on the EV market.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're looking at this from an EV buyer's perspective, KIA/Hyundai top the list (which is reflected in CR's EV ratings, giving them the top spot for the last few years)

RvTV95XBeo ,

Or even better, my experience with them - they can permanently mark you as poor when the person who stole your identity in the last data beach (Thanks Experian!) doesn't make their monthly payment, thus tanking your credit while you're entering escrow on your first home.

Thanks AT&T, now my stolen information I never even gave you is probably back on the black market! The cycle continues.

This. As someone with ADHD, it's very helpful to get an extra alert when my washer/dryer is done.

I used to pull this off with a Zigbee Smart Outlet + HA, which is frankly an OK fix, but did not work for my electric dryer.

When it came time to replace my old appliances, I got a smart washer & dryer, said what the hell and put it on an isolated network. It's connected to HA via the cloud (not ideal but ¯\(ツ)/¯). It just works, and I wind up with mildewy neglected clothes less often.

It's not perfect, but I'm willing to deal with isolating 2 appliances to cover for my attention span.

Do you have any proof that it's ISP throttled and not just a slower service (lacking in YouTube's billions of dollars of infrastructure investments)

RvTV95XBeo ,

And if you expect the same level of performance and service, regardless of your ISP, from a bootleg YouTube spin-off with no viable revenue stream that's probably hosted in a different country, versus a multi-billion-dollar video platform with servers around the globe, I have a new flavor of cool aid you might want to try.

I asked if OP had proof because its pretty easy to test if your ISP is throttling, just try and load the website through a VPN - if it's faster through a VPN, your ISP may be to blame. If not, it's probably just an underfunded platform with too much demand, or just high ping because it's too far from your home location.

Backdoor found in widely used Linux utility breaks encrypted SSH connections | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

TL;DR there was a backdoor found in the XZ program. All major distros have been updated but it is recommended that you do a fresh install on systems that are exposed to the internet and that had the bad version of the program. Only upstream distros were affected.

RvTV95XBeo ,

Probably for the exact same reason this backdoor was introduced. Users complain about slow feature rollouts so (unpaid) devs (maintaining software in their spare time out of the kindness of their hearts) cut corners. In some situations that looks like bringing on a second maintainer without thorough vetting, in others it looks like importing upstream packages without thorough vetting.

Don't blame the Termux devs here, blame the community that keeps pushing them to move faster.

RvTV95XBeo ,

You're not wrong, but most of this legacy software runs on legacy hardware as well. Win 2k isn't supported by most modern hardware

RvTV95XBeo ,

You realize no one is getting paid on Lemmy right? Yeah maybe someone set up a patreon to cover some of their server costs, but that's probably not even covering the full costs, let alone the time or takes to admin an instance

RvTV95XBeo ,

Probably depends on the car + alternator, but it's not so rare for modern gas cars to have AC outlets for backseat passengers, and the ones I've seen are typically rated 120-150W or so. Glancing at the power meter I have on my fridge, it uses ~110W while running and only runs ~10% of the time.

Theoretically the car probably can keep up while running, BUT

Compressor startup current may blow whatever fuse is protecting that circuit.

AND

Cars are very inefficient generators. You'd be wasting a bunch of fuel so I wouldn't generally recommend it unless it's an emergency.

That said, in an emergency it may be worth doing for like 20 min on / 1 hr off, so that you're running the engine only when needed, but I'm not an expert, that's just pure speculation.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

RvTV95XBeo ,

Bing is not good now.

I jump search engines regularly trying to find my happy place, and though I never use Bing directly, I do use DDG (which in turn uses Bing), and I'd say about 50% of the time on DDG I have to !bang swap to other platforms because the results just aren't helpful.

They may not care about being filmed, so much as being able to call the cops while they're in the middle of robbing you.

RvTV95XBeo ,

Exactly. They are trying to avoid confrontation, so they don't want people seeing someone on their security camera and calling the cops.

If you get an alert that there's motion in your living room, you may check and would call the cops if you see something. If you get an alert that your camera is disconnected you quietly curse your ISP and continue about your day.

How do you name your lights?

I’m having hard time finding names for the different lights that make sense when I ask my voice assistant to control. I end up with ceiling light, but I have more than one ceiling light, and saying Living room ceiling light is a mouthful. I tried giving funny names but I keep getting confused which is which. How did you name...

RvTV95XBeo ,

I've got the same setup. It's usually , e.g.,

Bedroom sconce left, or kitchen overhead 3.

It's rare that I want to control just one bulb, so groups work for most situations, and scripts solve for specific scenarios like going to bed or watching a movie.

RvTV95XBeo ,

RvTV95XBeo ,

For some reason, my Firefox with ublock removes all of the mobile ads from pages I visit. I miss finding it about all of the hot singles in my area.

RvTV95XBeo ,

You don't have to share your number to get spam messages - I get weekly spam texts for "Susan" (not my name), which I never interact with but have been coming from random numbers for years.

Once your # is on a list, whether you put it there or not, it never leaves.

I'm the only one who has ever had this phone no., but if I were to swap now, 99% chance I'd get a reused number, which would probably come already loaded on a million different spam lists. There's no winning.

RvTV95XBeo ,

But you have to remember, that's true for lost sales but it's also true for API calls - only a small fraction of their user base is contributing to this high API usage

Their follow-up:

I have written to Haier to try to get some clarification and perhaps an agreement. I hope Haier will listen to us now that so many people are supporting us. Thank you all!

Dear Haier team,

you have probably noticed that my announcement to delete the plugin has met with a lot of displeasure from the community.
There are a number of people who bought your appliances not only because of the good price/performance ratio, but also because they can be integrated into home assistant.

I think it would be helpful to the discussion if you could explain the following questions:

Please provide details of WHICH clauses of terms of service does this project violate?
   What is an unauthorized manner?
What significant economic harm is being faced by the company? (in terms of dollar figures)
When did these projects violate your intellectual property?

I'm sorry if some people have gone over the top, but this doesn't have to escalate and there doesn't have to be a bad reputation for your brand in the open source community.

Can we find a common solution here? Can I do something to make the plugins use the API more economically? Should we reduce the polling? I would like to release a new version that uses the API in a way that does not harm your business.
You can also consider an official home assistant integration, the home assistant guys would like to get in touch with you for that. This would be a great competitive advantage within the smart home community.

I hope to get an answer and until then I'll leave the repos online.

Andre

An F&P induction range was on our short list for an upcoming replacement to our aging gas range. It is now off the short list. Not sure how many API calls a $8000 range would have paid for, but I'm sure they'll be happy to know my HA server won't be pinging them any time soon.
