Showroom7561 OP ,

That actually explains a lot!

Showroom7561 OP ,

Honestly it's not a small job to go up and down the aisles and collect everything.

I would expect that their pay covers the work, and if that, then the "handling fee" should.

If not, then their damn employer needs to step up!

Showroom7561 ,

Looks like a Chromebook, which means Linux would be a bit hacky and not guaranteed to work well at all.

Showroom7561 ,

It likely will work, but may not work 100%. It really depends on how popular this laptop is, and how well-supported it is in the linux community.

Showroom7561 ,

Nice! I gave up on Chromebooks after google screwed me over, but back then it was all very much an improvised hack to get Linux on them.

Glad to see that progress has been made!

Showroom7561 ,

Has Aurora been improved since last year?

I tried to love it, but it was such a pita to actually update things. Like, it hardly actually updated without errors or issues. When it did "update" an app, I wouldn't be able to actually open it. After it broke some important apps I was using, I uninstalled it.

Showroom7561 ,

I don't care that it can't update these apps, since I use Obtainium. But, FFS, at least let users have an option to ignore or hide those apps.

Showroom7561 OP ,

Banks need to send a paper notice in case you got switched without knowledge or consent.

That's understandable, but this wasn't from the bank. It's basically a reminder for something I had already consented to in writing.

I cannot count the number of times I gotten a coercive UI trying to force me to drop paper statements.

This grinds my gears so much. And it's always an “ask me later” option if you don't.

Showroom7561 OP ,

I get non-stop promotions by mail from a company that I already have services with... but the promotions only apply to "new customers".

The money they could save by not sending me that garbage should be deducted from my bill as a discount.

Showroom7561 ,

Yeah, I've got a bunch of Ugreen hardware (external HDD enclosures, USB hubs, adapters, etc.), but there's no way I'd get their hardware with an OS on it. I don't trust the brand that much.

Showroom7561 ,

What do people think of their hardware in general?

I've been very happy with their external HDD enclosures, and various USB chargers.

Their USB car charger has been the only one to survive Canadian winters and summers for more than a year (going on 4), which is impressive.

I'd say their quality is as good, or better, than most of the Anker stuff I've purchased.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Showroom7561 ,

Google Earth and Google Street View.

Even after all these years of using them, I'm still amazed.

Showroom7561 ,

Does their doorbell camera at least give you a preview thumbnail in the notification? Because their other cameras don't (I've got like dozen of them).

Showroom7561 ,

They are a less than full gas vehicles, but they output considerably more CO2 than they are tested and marketed to output.

Many people buy them because they believe they are a green form of transportation based on the marketing. But the real world pollution they cause makes them not very green at all.

This is a significant report, especially when you consider the source.

Showroom7561 ,

how is that even possible?

Several reasons I can think of.

  • the lab tests are highly flawed.
  • the marketing is downright misleading.
  • people aren't charging them.
  • people are using them in ways that don't take advantage of the battery.

Hybrids are really only "green" when you use them for very short trips at low speed. In that context, any other form of transportation will be better, in my opinion.

Showroom7561 ,

Marginally greener when compared to the most environmentally harmful modes of transportation (I.e. other cars and trucks), but not even close to green when compared to alternative forms of personal and/or public transportation.

Showroom7561 ,

Even thought I own a OneBlade (gift), I'm happy that my old-school, safety razor doesn't have any of the problems these modern shavers do.

They are more reliable, and they give a better shave, and they aren't plagued by planned-obsolescence, and....

Tools for collecting traffic data on my street?

I'm working with my neighbors to petition the city to add traffic calming measures (e.g. speed bumps, one way roads) to my street. I'm also hoping to turn it into a bit of a research project. Does anyone know of any tools to monitor or even automate data collection of the speeds of cars, number of cars going by, how many...

Showroom7561 ,

automate data collection of the speeds of cars, number of cars going by

My garmin bike computer + garmin varia radar can do this.

how many actually stop at intersections/stop signs

The thing about cars actually stopping will require either a video camera with a review of the footage afterwards, or a live volunteer.

Showroom7561 ,

There are two radar data apps for the Varia that I know of, but DCrainmaker explains the more popular of the two here. The app has been updated since the article, so it's better 🤗

When you are actually on a bike ride, you can see the real-time stats of approaching cars, their relative and absolute speeds, distance, etc.

It's pretty amazing.

Showroom7561 ,

Yes, it can be expensive. If you cycle, it's worth the investment.

As an alternative, which may work for the OP's application, is an inexpensive sports radar used for measuring the speed of baseballs, golfballs, hockey pucks, etc.

Some will give you the option to log and export the data, so you'd at least have speed and # of captures (I.e. cars) that pass.

The only disadvantage I see vs the bike radar, is that a sports radar might not do well when there are multiple cars passing at one time. A bike radar can detect and separate vehicles in a cluster.

Showroom7561 ,

Of all the objects in the world, I think this type of packaging has probably cut up my hands more than anything else.

And I love it when the product is delicate and encased in this plastic fortress... like SD cards.

Showroom7561 ,

I don't get it. I've been using Jellyfin from the LG app store on my TV since late 2022.

Showroom7561 ,

Ah, very nice!

Showroom7561 ,

I still remember March 1998 in Toronto. Summer temperatures, mid 20 degree Celsius. It was glorious.

Showroom7561 OP ,

It's toddler-like behaviour. They don't even realize how it would benefit them, because they are so short-sighted.

Showroom7561 ,

Paris cycling numbers double in one year thanks to massive investment

If you build it, they will come.

It always irks me when I speak with city planners who say they can't build out cycling infrastructure because there aren't enough cyclists.

Can you tell me how many cars are on undeveloped land with no roads? Yeah, same reason.

Paris, along with other cities who have invested in cycling infrastructure, have found out that cyclists actually do use it! And seeing more cyclists on safe infrastructure encourages other people to become cyclists!

Showroom7561 ,

I'm honestly so happy to be using Synology Photos. It reads my folder structure; leaves EXIF data alone; unless I want to change it (i.e. time/date); has great sort and search features; I can easily share photos/albums with people, even for them to add photos to my albums; and the mobile apps "just works" for viewing and backing up my photos and videos from multiple devices.

Yes, it's “proprietary”, but it doesn't hold your images hostage as something like a proprietary database would. I'm free to explore my photos using any third-party I like, simply by pointing to where they are stored on the NAS.

And while it has some OK subject recognition, I pair it with Exire Foto for mind-blowing, local AI-based search if I need to find something very specific in my collection of 125,000+ images.

Showroom7561 ,

I've never had that issue on any of the devices it's been installed on.

It's asked me to log back in, but usually for reasons that would make sense.

On my device, I do use the Photos app quite often, so I'd know if there was a problem right away. My wife never opens her app, but I do check it from time to time to make sure that it's still backing things up.

Alternatively, I believe the Synology Drive and Files apps also include backup functionality that might work better for you.

Showroom7561 ,

That's a shame. Was this on iOS or Android?

How's Immich running for you? It looks significantly more polished than when I last checked it out. I may give it a spin!

Showroom7561 ,

This honestly makes me furious:

A 15-year-old boy... e-bike

the teen was riding with a passenger on the back.

They were riding ... on the sidewalk

The teen who died was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Is osmand normally terrible?

I just tried osmand. It took forever to locate me and then the map would freeze for minutes, then the blue arrow would finally jump to my location. It seems useless for real time navigation, is that normal? Google maps works fine on the phone (Android) so it's not the hardware. Is there maybe some setting I haven't found?...

Showroom7561 ,

Woah. I've never had that experience.

What phone are you using?

Showroom7561 ,

This is too good to be true. How long until Google reverses this decision? 😂

Showroom7561 ,

Sounds like a design flaw. If you can't manually set a location, then the app is broken. I turn off and deny location requests for apps and websites, as most people should, because it's often a massive privacy risk.

Showroom7561 ,

I think the OP is the buyer, but regardless, the problem is the same.

Post fake local ads for what purpose? You'd get no sales if someone realizes your listing is actually 500km away instead of local (if that's where they are looking).

All of the market sites I've used allows you to set a location. This can be where you live, where you can meet, or some other place you frequent.

If you do t want to have your location shared on a location based website maybe you’re in the wrong place.

I'm saying that the user should be able to enter the location they are searching in. Hell, I'll search all of Canada sometimes just because I know my immediate area won't have certain items. I've had no issues shipping as a seller, or getting something shipped as a buyer.

If you geo restrict too much, the app/market would be crap.

Showroom7561 ,

A scammer could post an item for sale in any number of locations trying to bait the scammed into a purchase.

I'd think that anyone motivated to commit a crime would simply just spoof their location and do that anyway. The decision to not allow everyone else the option to manually select a location just punishes everyone except the scammer, and makes the app considerably less useful.

But I think this has less to do with preventing scams and more to do with data collection. I'd bet money on it! 🤑

Showroom7561 ,

Do they stop at 300ml? 200ml? Are we going to see 100ml cans of Guinness?

Speaking purely for frozen vegetables, there doesn't seem to be a bottom. I was buying packs that were 1.2 or 1.3kg, then it went down to 1kg, then 750, now 500g... seeing a 500g package at MORE than what 1KG was selling for is hilariously infuriating. Not to mention, it uses twice the plastic to get the same amount of food.

I curse any company that does this.

Walmart seems to ONLY have a “technical issue” when it comes to requesting a refund. All other areas of the website work perfectly fine! (lemmy.ca)

Any time saved by ordering online and picking up the order has vanished chasing customer support people to fix something that would have taken a few seconds through their website.

Showroom7561 OP ,

Regardless of how these protocols may be handled, they advise customers to use the refund option within the order screen on the website, which is what I did.

If it's broken, why even direct people there? I wouldn't expect a half-working website from one of the largest retailers on the planet.

Showroom7561 OP ,

The page may have not loaded because of a failed API call to the credit processor when requesting a refund.

It didn't even get that far.

This error quite literally came up when I click on the "request a refund" button within my order (where Walmart said I needed to. There should have been another page asking which item(s) I want to refund, and I would imagine ask me for a reason why. That's well before it needs to call an API for credit processing.

In any case, this was mildly infuriating, more for the wasted time on something that should have taken two seconds.

FWIW, I can only hope that Walmart gets notified whenever these end user issues pop up on the website... so they can fix the problem. It's been many hours already, and the page still errors out. Unless they've hired amateurs, this seems excessive. Would it take this long if their payment system was down?

Showroom7561 OP ,

"The service" in this context, would simply be another Walmart page. A page which also just happened to be one where I'd start the process of getting money back.

It was not a page to actually process any transactions, but to start the process of requesting a refund.

Showroom7561 OP ,

I had a similar issue redeeming points on a different credit card. Always a problem.

Seems like too much of a coincidence for these companies.

Showroom7561 OP ,

Roblox (the kid's game), asked me to send a DRIVER'S LICENSE to close my account.

I made it very clear that if I didn't need to provide one to sign up, I sure as hell wasn't going to give it to them now.

Showroom7561 ,

You can swap one car for another, and it still won't change the immense harm caused by the infrastructure that these different cars depend on.

Rubber tire dust is still the same with EVs, probably more due to their weight.

Swaths of green space being taken up by 8+ lane highways and parking won't just go away because an EV is using it.

The harm to pedestrians and cyclists will not change because we have more EVs.

If we don't reduce our dependency on cars, then "car harm" will never go away.

Showroom7561 ,

flex drivers

I'm not sure what that is, but there seems to be no consistency with deliveries. Some are in regular cars, some are in larger rental vans, others are from Canada Post, and some are from UPS.

I've even had a few deliveries where I could see, on a map, where the driver was. That only happened a few times, but it was pretty cool.
