It’s, yes. Back when they thought the sky had to be solid because something was holding it up.

Early Christian’s, for example believed that the water for Noah’s flood came from the firmament melting (since that bit in genesis describing the sky as “the waters” etc.)(it was written by Bronze Age peeps. Not exactly at the height off science.)

Linked worked just fine for me.

For the record, mountain rills have some of the best trout in them.

Emotions? Sure.

Like us?

I dunno. Does irate fury at being woken up mid nap count as “like us”?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Just because we understand their emotions only on a basic level doesn’t mean they’re not more complicated.

There is a lot we don’t understand and can’t understand.

Personally, comedy routines shouldn’t start before happy hour, at the earliest.

And I’m not entirely sold on the team building…

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I dunno. I shudder at the thought of certain individuals trying a standup comedy routine. If the karaoke happy hour was anything to go by... there's not enough booze in the world to make that painless; and they frown on drinking at these team building things anyhow.

now i want to fork something into a new distro called "Schroedinger Linux"...

"maybe it works. maybe it doesn't. maybe it's best just to leave it right there and not look at it."

Grew up in red hat- you know? Back when red hat wasn’t the enemy.

Endeavor is my flavor of the month. (Why pick one?)

I’m not sure raw story is going to be sending malware.

Spam? In 37 different flavors,

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

spam is just unwanted emails, it's not software, in of its self.

Also, the tracking beacons only load if you let it. I assume you have your email client set to not load remote content. (If you don't, you really should.) not sure what you use for email, but thunderbird (mozilla) does it automatically.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Malware is any unwanted thing on your computer that either you or your system has to deal with, whether in the form of software, emails, or pop-ups.

Malware is Malicious Software it's a very specific thing, Cisco defines it as :

Malware, short for malicious software, refers to any intrusive software developed by cybercriminals (often called hackers) to steal data and damage or destroy computers and computer systems. Examples of common malware include viruses, worms, Trojan viruses, spyware, adware, and ransomware. Recent malware attacks have exfiltrated data in mass amounts.

Cisco defines spam as:

Spam email is unsolicited and unwanted junk email sent out in bulk to an indiscriminate recipient list. Typically, spam is sent for commercial purposes. It can be sent in massive volume by botnets, networks of infected computers.

Sally from Accounting hitting reply all? spam. Kyle sending out embarrassing photos of Steve to everyone? Spam. your fifth cousin's baby photos? well, I assume that's spam. maybe you like baby photos.

those chain letters? spam. but not malware. They might contain malware, but the email itself is not malware. For example, a malicious image, won't load- it has to go fetch the image first. Until you load the remote content, it's not malware. It's just a way of pointing you at the malware.

That said, it's important to note that Raw Story is a legitimate company that wants your business. They're not going to intentionally send you malware. mostly they're going to be using the remote content to load pretty images and set up some basic telemetry (essentially read receipts. Maybe a cookie if you're using a web client for your email, or perhaps clicked a link.) This is true of most legitimate companies. They want your business, so they're not going to so brazenly piss you off with ransomware or a trojan.

As long as you're not loading remote content and clicking links, there's basically nothing that email can do to you. you can train your email client to recognize it as spam and send it straight to the bin; reducing potential accidental openings.

Motion sensors don’t provide localization. Gps on cellphones are only really accurate to a few dozen meters.

You can couple gps and motion (and changes in gps location) to fudge it. Which is why when you diverge off the route navigation provides… it takes it a moment to figure it out. In the display, they “know” you’re on the road so it doesn’t have to be that accurate, they just guess what lane you’re in based on direction and such.

They’re certainly not going to know what seat you’re in.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

And how does the phone know if you just take left turns faster? How does it know if you’re in the left or right lane? It has no way of knowing what the forces are, or if that variation is caused by something else.

Your phone has no idea which side of the car it’s on, and insurance companies and their apps really don’t care.

Cities are loud even without cars. You still have the trains, busses, and all.

The people screaming at each other.

Doors slamming, the occasional gun shots and more shouting.

The idiot who thinks his shitty music is universally appreciated.

The dumbass whose definition of “inside voice” is more generally “angry drill sergeant”.

FuglyDuck ,

anything exciting?

Black holes eating stars? Aliens? something blow up?
hehe.

I'd say 'be gentle', but uh, brutality is kind of part of the formality, right?

They feel guilty because they keep intercepting the texts you’re sending… and they’re a bit slow, because you know. They have a few hundred lonely losers subjects…

And so she thought you were ghosting her.

Pro tip… get a vpn and route it through Darfur. Those NSA agents are much better staffed.

@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Manjaro feels that way to me too.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Considering that the AUR is a repo of build packages that are managed by users, it’s mostly unsafe because of that- not being in manjaro (which also uses pacman, and as far as I know just a different flavor.)

If you really want to use the AUR, you just have to turn it on. As with any package builds, it’s safe to use if you check the build and see what it does- and you need to be doing that in arch too. (Or not. Fun times.)

The dog forgives you anyway.

It’s okay, you’re just a cat person.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say their owners are terrible, though. The dogs might not be well disciplined, but that really isn’t their fault.

(Unless the dog is aggressive. Then it might be. It also probably shitty owners, too.)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I’d slurp pasta with andromeda.

Wait. That came out wrong.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I am convinced “best dog” generally comes down to proximity. Both figuratively and then literally.

Never met a dog who wasn’t the best., at least in that moment.

Including one that kept trying to set me up with her human. Betsy was an ancient basset and wouldn’t leave our office building without saying goodbye. If I wasn’t in the office, she’d literally hunt me down. And if her human tried to pull a fast one, the entire building would hear Betsy howling bloody murder.

Her human is lesbian, but she’s a good friend now. All because Betsy’s ears caused immediate and uncontrollable giggling when the dog walked by.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the figurative part!

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Well. Picard would moralize a bit too much before getting on Arch. but, he ain't wrong.

I'm really annoyed by how much Brave Search is pushing AI

I've been using Brave Search supplemented by Startpage for the past 2+ years. When I search for something, I want to get results for credible webpages, not a summary of unknown quality. I liked the previous AI inclusion because it was instant, didn't take up much space, and I could quickly navigate to the websites referenced in...

DDG sold out and allowed trackers on the mobile app. It's a slow slide but it's inevitable

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

pi-holes can't stop websites you use from collecting your data. they've already started accepting cash for things (by way of mobile browser.). it's only a matter of time before it slides into more things- if it hasn't already.

currently I'm using start-page and it's good enough for my needs. The advantage there is they're in the EU, and have enhanced privacy requirements

Edit: I’ve used Firefox since their first beta. Now I feel old…

I’d hire her,

Most people aren’t qualified and lie anyway. At least she sounds interesting,

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Remember folks, if your firearm is worth more than you are; showing it is like flashing your wallet.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly? Nearly a decade of working contract security, including most of that time being level 3,

I can easily say that I’d rather not be armed.

First, carrying visible weapons makes people respond differently. They see you’re armed and everyone reacts to it. Its mere presence escalates situations.

Secondly, your very question implies the trap always being armed leads to- you assume this man is aggressive or hostile. And most often that assumption is flat wrong.

When all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail.

Finally, situation awareness is infinitely more valuable than any weapon. You lose every fight you get into. Even if the other guy doesn’t harm you, if you draw down and shoot, you’re going to jail. You’re going to be held until they know what happened, and you’re probably getting charged.

You lose on legal fees. You probably lose your job. And now you have to live with guilt- even if the subject had it coming.

Also just a side note I was discussing open carry. Concealed is a different matter; concealed properly, no one will know until you draw. (And then things escalate fucking fast.)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I'd prefer kids being exploited for debugging than meat packing plants. probably pays better, too. Snack-to-work ratio seems higher, also.

hey. Uh. I'm not a kid, but I can be a dumb fuck... if anyone's hiring...
