SirSamuel ,

Like punching someone in the dark!

J/K, I have a pavlovian response to the phrase "victimless crime"

SirSamuel ,

On Reddit there was a thread along the lines of "Millennials, what's your retirement plans?" and the thread was locked with a message from a mod saying they had to shut the thread down because of all of the comments about suicide.

Quite frankly, I get it.

SirSamuel ,

Wouldn't an economic incel be someone who lives on their parent's dime and doesn't really engage with the economy to any real degree? Someone who works, buys, but isn't making a living wage isn't an incel, they are being involuntarily screwed by society at large.

I'm sure there's a word for a person that's being penetrated against their will…

When ‘Lol, No’ Is Not Enough: Lawyer Explains Why Bogus Takedown Over ‘Fuck The LAPD’ Shirt Should Result In Paying Legal Fees (www.techdirt.com)

You may recall last month’s hilarious story of lawyer Mike Dunforth’s response to a vexatious angry demand letter from IMG, representing the LAPD Foundation, claiming that a t-shirt with the following “Fuck the LAPD” logo violated its IP rights:

SirSamuel ,

I was taking to my dad today and he said "My lawyer is an asshole" and i said "Dad you don't have to say lawyer twice" and I laughed and he laughed and the TV laughed and it was great

SirSamuel ,

+1 for accuracy, thank you

Related to fall protection training, this might be a practical demonstration of the extension length of different types of lanyards (the "rope" that secures the body harness to the anchor point) using weighted dummies. Some lanyards will stretch a few inches, some several feet. Their use varies depending on total fall height, anchor points, work space requirements, really a lot of different factors. But use the wrong one and you'll wind up with broken legs and a wedgie instead of a safety report and buying beers for your coworkers.

I doubt that's what's being demonstrated here, but it's a possibility

Edit: turtle loving duck, just to be clear, i was mansplaining for the masses. You clearly have a firm grasp of fall protection

SirSamuel ,

I'm not in denial. I'm well aware that I'm chemically dependent on caffeine and will have withdrawal symptoms, including headaches, if I cut back or stop drinking coffee.

I also really like coffee. I drink half-caff just so I can drink more without getting the jitters.

But the rest of them are totally in denial. 100%

SirSamuel ,

I pay for Proton and the non-free servers generally work, although some have been blocked.

Eventually I'll treat Reddit like Pinterest, either blocking it entirely from search results, or using FF add-ons to bypass all the cruft laid over the website

SirSamuel ,

This song is really silly but i feel like it's the quintessential Midwestern road trip in song form

https://youtu.be/kD6DBxIobz4

Be warned, it's folk music, which means it's catchy, in it's own way

SirSamuel ,

There's a German style brewery in Columbus, Ohio that sells black shirts with red block lettering that say "Helles Real" and I think it's the best thing ever

SirSamuel ,

This is highly pedantic, and i apologize for doing this. However, I can't leave this alone

It's lose

Personally I blame Gboard

SirSamuel ,

Speaking of giggles keyboard getting worse

I think I'll just leave whatever that's gives me instead of correcting the dumb mistakes it makes. This will make things confusing, but possibly entertaining as well. It send to be doing well, but theirs another mistake, and another. Oh well, I'm going to get back to installing graphene of on my old pixel

Oddly enough, there are no randomly capitalized words this time

SirSamuel ,

You loost me there lol

SirSamuel ,
SirSamuel ,

I have a friend that works with a rescue group in Colorado, almost exclusively for cattle dogs. They rescue and re-home the dogs for a variety of reasons. The most prevalent is the dog can't work anymore and will be put down. That's it. It got too old and is consuming resources without producing.

I'm not saying all farmers and ranchers are like this, but the mentality certainly exists. These people see certain life as a commodity only, and it often extends to cruelty to "lower life". It's even at the root of calling people who aren't in their tribe "lower life", and devaluing them accordingly

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

SirSamuel ,

Hard disagree. I'm using g board, from Alphabet, which is about as concerned with privacy as a nudist exhibitionist with a shame kink. That is to say, privacy as a concept exists yes, but only to be perverted.

The only comfort is that I'm not the only one with random capitalization in my texts

SirSamuel ,

Do you think dorfs are just out there laying pipe all the time? Who has time for that? Look at the daily schedule of a dorf.

Wake up, drink beer, pet cat, drink beer, mine, drink beer, move rubble, drink beer, pet cat, wait, where's the cat? RAGE, drink beer, sleep.

Where in all that busy schedule do you expect a couple of dorfs to find time to make love? For crying out loud, they spend any free time they have trying to figure out if that's a lady dorf under all that chainmail and beard. Besides, everyone knows children attract vampires

SirSamuel ,

This is the way

SirSamuel ,

Lol yeah, when they're close enough to each other and not busy working they release spores

SirSamuel ,

All right, I'll take a shot at it. What the hell, it works on Star Trek.

SirSamuel ,

Lives no more than twenty years

Sign me up!

SirSamuel ,

I've lived two cat lives over and am on my way through a third

SirSamuel ,

It jumped up a notch

SirSamuel ,

I'm kinda curious. Did the Simpsons invent 'yoink' or did it exist before 1988?

SirSamuel ,

Nice! Thank you that's awesome

SirSamuel ,

I don't know how to tag but i got an answer in this thread

SirSamuel ,

I read this in The Brain's voice

Except for the italicized part, I read that in Yako's voice

SirSamuel ,

Little known fact(oid).

Ohio's original state motto was "75% of our name is vowels"

Iowa's State motto was "…God dammit Ohio!"

These are the most interesting things about both states. I should know, I'm from Ohio.

And if you want to experience the United States Midwest in song form, look up Bird Bird Bird by Lou and Peter Berryman

SirSamuel ,

factoid (2) - an assumption or speculation that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact.

Absolutely 100% made up. So, if that's the most interesting thing about each state, and it's fictional, imagine how mind numbingly boring the corn states must be

(I'm joking ofc, Ohio has a few redeeming qualities. The southeastern portion is particularly beautiful, Idaho has some staggering vistas, and Iowa… I mean, 75% of their name is vowels I guess)

SirSamuel ,

Don't forget the Hocking Hills too.

I just went to Jungle Jim's for the first time this weekend actually. What an amazing place. For those that don't know, it's basically an IKEA sized grocery store. Over 6 acres (24000 m^2 )

You’ve never been here have you?

I'm born and raised in Ohio slap-nut. My friends and family stretch from Steubenville, Athens, Gallapolis, on through Portsmouth, and over to Cincinnati. I can speak with some authority here

Because nobody from Ohio would ever call southeastern Ohio It’s redeeming quality

??? You've clearly never been to the Hocking Hills, or your values are drastically different from mine

Sure it’s beautiful,

That's the point

but it’s less pretty than Kentucky

Who the hell said anything about Kentucky?

and the best thing you can say about the people there is that you won’t run into many.

Ah some are okay, but yeah.

Columbus is fucking weird

100% agree

in a good way.

Ehhhhhhh, 80% agree

Just don’t go south of Columbus or anywhere near Indiana.

To me there is a wretched stretch of Ohio the glaciers left behind that's great for farming and little else. It's flat, boring, and the people that live there think they are at the center of the universe.

Look I grew up in the flats. My extended family lived in the hills near the river. I was always jealous of them when I was a kid. Once i grew up I traveled the world a bit and found the places I really like. Fjords, snow-capped mountains, bioluminescent bays. And I found the quiet beauty of the Ohio River valley to have it's own charm. But the flatlands of Ohio are only good for farming and, these days, solar energy.

What southeastern Ohio lacks is economy. It's so depressed it's attempted suicide several times. Many rural people struggle economically, and it affects how they think. It keeps them small.

But hey, the state name looks like a tractor, so that's… something

SirSamuel ,

My one regret is that i only have one upvote to give. But to make sure I clicked it twice.

Do you have a patron or something? Can i buy you a coffee? Or an egg?

SirSamuel ,

Man i have fond memories of S1 RvB.

"Lift with your back, not your legs. Groin it out"

SirSamuel ,

We are commodities

We exist to be bought and sold

By the ruling class

I have been bought and sold

Many many times

But only my thoughts

And identity

And words

And face

So that's okay

I'll just scroll other stolen thoughts

On a phone built by an eight year old

Who was bought

And sold

Half a world away

SirSamuel ,

Thank you! This was actually my first attempt at free form poetry, it just kind of flowed out of me. It only took till middle age for inspiration to strike lol

SirSamuel ,

Jokes on you, i don't own a house, can't have a pet in my apartment, and my knees are already bad.

I love this timeline

SirSamuel ,

Yep, ten year old me browsing the toy section until the spine of the Sears catalogue broke.

And, of course, thirteen year old me discovering boobies in the lingerie section

SirSamuel ,

By 2040, these states—California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Rhode Island—are aiming for 90 percent of those shipments to be heat pumps.

The coalition’s announcement comes just months after the federal government doubled down on its own commitment to heat pumps, announcing $169 million in funding for the domestic production of the systems.

These are the states, and the article doesn't seem to go into detail on what the actual programs are in each state. However, i only skimmed the article

SirSamuel ,

NGL hating in heat pumps is like hating on EVs because they need charged longer than it takes to fill up a tank of gas. Yes the use case is not exactly 1:1 to the existing system, but it's an improvement for energy use and emissions overall. (Not saying you're hating on heat pumps, just a general observation)

Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US (www.engadget.com)

Disney+ started getting strict about password sharing in Canada last year, and now it's expanding the restriction to the US. According to The Verge, the streaming service has been sending out emails to its subscribers in the country, notifying them about a change in its terms of service. Its service agreement now states that...

SirSamuel ,

Oddly enough, the price hikes earlier last year were enough to move me to spend four times as much as an annual subscription for a NAS and 16TB of storage. I made digital backups of my media and set up my parents and sister's family with Jellyfin accounts to access my media as needed. Now they can watch videos of our wedding and my niece's dance recital from the comfort of their living rooms. All without worrying about arbitrary changes to TOS. And I'm learning about all kinds of horrible children's shows. OTOH my niece and nephew are learning about cool things like Batman: The Animated Series and Tiny Toons.

I've only run into a couple small issues when it came to backing up my media, but I'll get them sorted.

SirSamuel ,

It's not a waste, it's an investment lol

SirSamuel ,

First off, I'm by no means even close to an expert. More of a spurt, in fact.

I tried Plex but wanted to give remote access at varying levels, which, to my understanding, requires paying for a subscription to Plex Premium or some such. Basically I wanted to be able to see my sexy home videos from anywhere, let my parents see my wedding videos and their granddaughter's dance recital, and let my niece see her dance recital only (to painfully stretch a metaphor).

Jellyfin has it's limits. It's easier for my needs in part because my family has Roku, and there is a built-in app for Jellyfin on Roku devices. I have a Samsung TV and haven't taught myself how to sideload Jellyfin into my TV. The app works great tho, so I can watch things on my phone or laptop with ease while on vacation. I probably spent a few hours teaching myself about port forwarding, VPNs, and such. I bought a Synology NAS, which simplified things quite a bit.

Anyway, I'm not at all familiar with Apple products. Nothing wrong with them, mind, I just never liked the walled garden ethos

SirSamuel ,

I understood some of those words lol

I was toying with the idea of a home made server using an existing case and a mini atx, but then i ran across a 16TB NAS HDD for like $240 at microcenter and just decided to go the simple route, picked up a two bay Synology case and the rest is history

SirSamuel ,

Yarr, it surely be

SirSamuel ,

So do they provide the screwdriver and USB cable for the ignition, or do I have to provide my own?

It is indeed a Point of Sale, albeit a shitty one
