What you have here is another case of Linux users jumping to defend the only things they have to defend, even if it’s absolute shit.

Funny how OP is using libreoffice on Windows though, what's there Linux-related to defend? Did a Linux user hurt you?
If anything this is another opportunity for some snarky comment about Windows being shit and crashing for no reason since the 1990s.

SkippingRelax ,

Is that because of bugs, or shitty software that you don't trust autosave? Isn't it likely that ctrl-s is affected by the same problem and regardless of how compulsively you press the combo, it does in fact nothing?

Note that OPs instance simply had autosave disabled, not really a trust issue

SkippingRelax ,

Why do you trust ctrl-s though? You are a software engineer, you know that a bug in the piece of code that saves the document would affect both calls, regardless of whether its invoked by a timer or by the end user pressing keys, right?

I mean we have all been bitten by op's problem In the past but it was exactly the same issue, autosave not enabled (most likely didn't exist) what's with all these, I don't trust software to do it's job so I do things by hand?

Particularly from software developers or other technical users. Found a bug in a piece of software, report it, you don't need to change your behaviour for the next 20 years and tell everyone anecdotes about you still don't trust a regression.

Is that your biggest concern about a tech company? Id be happy for marketing departments to he shut down and the money redirected to make better/cheaper products.

While Google sucks now and has for a while, in their early days they have demonstrated that marketing is not all it takes to make innovative, successful products.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Apple obsession with marketing has created fanboys that spend the night queuing up to be the first to get the latest iPhone, and that don't question the technology or ethics (or anything) behind the flashing toy that they crave. Good for the executives and the shareholder but as a customer?

SkippingRelax ,

Are you implying that the average user doesn't know how to install an app? My 80 yo parents do that on their samsung tablet.

No need to trust any higher authorities, whatever that means

I don't use voice control since I'm against all cloud based services but am definitely interested and waiting for a good local option, paired with some decent devices that I can disseminate around the house.

I have been using ha for a very long time but am the opposite, haven't gone down the rabbit hole and have only half a dozen automations. With the exception of living room lights that come on 39 minutes before sunset, I don't control lights.
I have absolutely no problem using a switch as I enter a room, and see no point overcomplicating things in trying to guess what should happen when someone enters a room.

Being able to look for a recipe, set a timer, choose a youtube video, a song or a playlist while I am kneading dough and my hands are caked? Id love voice control while I'm in the kitchen and can't touch a phone without having to clean wash and dry my hands

I got chickens. It's great because I couldn't throw food away, they are happy to complement their diet with whatever the babies drop or don't eat, and I feel good as it keeps the chooks happy and it contributes to making eggs! Win win.

SkippingRelax ,

Agree!

SkippingRelax ,

Love the idea. Probably best to di it once the warranty is over or if you buy second hand though, as I suspect when you buy the heated seat car you have to sign an EULA like Apple products and agree not to tamper with the components or lose warranty and rights.

Quite simply, subscriptions for products have never existed in the history of humanity and shouldn't exist. You either sell me something or you rent it. If you can afford to give hardware to me for free, as long as it is disabled, someone is taking the piss.

SkippingRelax ,

Limited liability. Negotiate with the family of the victim, ideally don't pay at all if you can get away with it, and move on. Product management and marketing had a great idea to increase user retention, more in the meeting at 11.

SkippingRelax ,

Scuba diving equipment! Sorry you used your allocated oxygen, swipe your credit card to renew the subscription.

SkippingRelax ,

Came here to say this. Or at least the ferengi are in charge of marketing and product development.

SkippingRelax ,

like bicycle helmets

Stop giving these fuckers ideas for fuck sake! Do you want a bike helmet that splits open into two halves mid fall because your haven't signed up to their newsletter and liked them on Facebook?!

My t9p of mid-range baby car seats that I BOUGHT (ie. No subscription) come with a replacement agreement that each accident the seat is involved in above a certain threshold, they will replace the car seat for free as they are not safe to operate again after a crash -would need to check the manual in the car for deets, obviously not for a fender bender.

As many times as accidents could happen in the life time of the car seat, probably 8 years or so. For free.
Which I think it's smart as it gives them great pr in general, and it helps keeping their brand out of the news in case of a damaged item gets involved in a second crash and someone gets hurt.

I am sure they factored the cost of replacements into the seat price based on statistics, to me it tells you don't need to be a soulless piece of shit to make a good and reliable business model without being a dick.

SkippingRelax ,

It certainly should.

Shit sorry update 3900.12 that introduced buy now pay later at the checkout actually broke that logic. Customer service got reports that it actually does turn off that fail-safe, mostly from relatives of deceased and coroners.

Discussed in sprint meeting this morning and it was agreed the upgrade can't be rolled back due to agreements with vendors so the bug remains in production. Will be fixed in an upcoming release tbd.

You keep pretending to be great at assessing risks from your armchair but forget that these two guys are professionals, and you know nothing about rock climbing or this particular situation, you haven't provided a singke reason why what they are doing is risky, or stupid. Anchors not bomber proof enough? Not enough redundancy? Too much slack? What is the problem exactly?

Yet you feel entitled to judge them.
These are probably the guys that come and rescue you, when you do something stupid in the outdoors, not the other way around.
