Teachers explaining short stories be like

I carry a gun. Inside my waistband and under a shirt like a fucking adult. Open carrying out in the wilderness, for work or on a range is understandable.

Randos carrying in public is pure cringe and is super counterproductive to the goal of practical responsible gun ownership as I see it.

SomeAmateur ,

You know what I mean, open carrying.

Concealed carry isn't a fashion statement or anything political. It's a personal choice not something to intimidate or rub in people's faces.

I have the legal ability to, I have the training to do it safely, so I do. That's literally the extent of it.

SomeAmateur , (edited )

Umm yeah we live in a society so I guess every action is political from that perspective. I worked as a firefighter for several years. I know the response times for police and fire/ems and they aren't that good.

Appendix solves a lot of this. Printing can happen but a ton of it is easily avoided

SomeAmateur ,

Everyone else did a good job of listing the rest so I figured it was implied so here goes.

Open carrying makes you a bigger target to hypothetical mass shooters because you are the biggest threat to them and will be targeted first before you can react.

It makes you a bigger target to hypothetical robbers who use your weapon to size up how much money you have/make.

It is clearly visible so the chance of social interaction goes up (see comic)

It puts guns as front and center as your whole personality. Showing anything as your whole personality is not great, but something controversial and divisive is worse.

And nearly all of this is avoidable by simply concealed carrying if you want to be armed.

SomeAmateur , (edited )

It's not really an actual problem more than it is a fashion statement, which is against the ideals of people trying to use it as a legitimate self defense tool if all else fails.

Most people want to live a normal life. Go to places with family and friends etc. Having a gun is a personal choice, and those that choose to carry usually feel that if they have the capability to carry legally and safely to do so just in case no other help can get to you in time. Similar to wearing a seatbelt without expecting an accident to occur. And if it's not for you it's okay we understand.

Open carry has a place. On police officers, in wilderness areas where predators are common, and on range days. But at a restaurant or store is NOT one of those places you should open carry even if you can legally.

It brings all the attention to you and your gun and usually gives off a negative first impression. Any "bad guy" will simply target you first and by surprise. Or take your gun's value as a sign of how much expendable income you have. And it brings about unwanted interactions as seen in the comic, but if you are open carrying maybe you are probably looking for that reaction and in that case it's not purely self defense it's attention seeking.

I carry a concealed gun when I can, I respect responsible gun owners but open carry people are not responsible in my eyes. They make us all look bad imo.

SomeAmateur ,

If you say so

SomeAmateur , (edited )

Yeah it goes without saying that a gun being displayed out in the open by an unknown person is going to make people uncomfortable, and nobody will want to talk to them.

I've talked with my local cops when I was a firefighter. They are okay with concealed carry and understand it's a increasingly common thing. They told me to be sure my weapon was holstered or dropped as soon as it isn't needed anymore and wait for them to arrive.

Long response times in my area is the biggest thing for me. That's not just a factor for guns but also for the medical stuff and fire extinguisher I have in my car because fire/ems is the same way.

SomeAmateur , (edited )

Reminds me of messer blades. Basically local governments said swords weren't allowed so the people made extra long "knives" with a few sword features removed. Very similar to AR "pistols" today

But yeah good ole fashioned medieval weapons would be awesome to try out and own

SomeAmateur ,

I carry one all the time! For the stuff I do it's more useful than a pocket knife and phone lights only get you so far.

If anyone is wondering I use a Streamlight Protac 2L-X at work, and a Sofirn SC-21 out and about.

Is Privacy Worth It? (blog.thenewoil.org)

When I announced I would be closing my communities earlier this year, a curious thing happened: a surprising number of regulars replied with some variation of “I think this is my exit.” While some were specifically talking about Matrix, claiming that mine was the only room they were really active in and therefore they saw no...

Yeah I'm not really trying to hide from the govt, but I would vote on limiting their power if given the chance. Anyway, what I don't want is every corporation I deal with (car, bank, phone, apps, isp, etc) to track me so excessively.

If the govt did get curious it would take zero leg work, just ask those companies that are very willing to hand over my data to damn near anyone, or hold onto it long enough to have it stolen.

So with that in mind limiting corporate surveillance and limiting ease of govt surveillance is essentially the same thing, but the govt has the ability to put in the work and get you if they really wanted to.

Osmand is really cool and it's really capable but I understand that it isn't for people who don't want to tinker a bit to make things work just right for them.

For that Organic Maps is what I recommend.

SomeAmateur , (edited )

Idk how the new user experience is now but back when I first downloaded it I wanted a hybrid of sat imagery when cell signal allowed, with an overlay of offline OSM data. This was for two reasons, hiking and to see if the mapping in that hike area needed any major land use edits.

Anyway I had to fiddle with the menus and settings for a while to get the overlays where I wanted it to be. Don't get me wrong I was able to figure it out but for users who want to install and go it can be understandably frustrating

It's like $20 for cheap devices that talk to your phone via bluetooth. They have standalone devices too to fix that potential vulnerability.

I'm messing around with a few rn. Heltec V3s and TBeam Supremes.

My grandma told me of a relative that came to visit them in the US from Eastern Europe (Slovakia I think) after the Soviet Union dissolved.

One thing they noticed is that he always wore his shoes. Even when staying at home. Even to bed. They asked why and he explained that it was to give him a chance of escape if the Secret Police came and he was surprised that our family didn't have to do something similar.

Pulling a gun is a standard trained response to threats with severe bodily harm. Panic would be firing because of a percieved threat, see the acorn incident.

It seems dumb to look at that response from our perspective but a human being was burning to death before his eyes. Those are images, sounds, feeling (heat) and smells that will be with him for the rest of his life. The cop did nothing wrong because even in that moment there was so little to do.

He was trained to be a cop, not a firefighter so the training he fell back on was police training. People out here talking like most of them wouldn't be a shocked bystander too.

Wrist watches used to be women's wear. Pocket watches were for men until WW1 when they found out that wrist mounted timepieces are super handy when you need to carry a rifle all the time and launch attacks synchronized with walking artillery barrages.

Just like anything else it can be purely for looks or purely for function but the best stuff does both at once. A nice looking precise watch, a pen that looks and writes great, dress shoes comfortable enough to wear all day, an Italian suit with a tactical liner lol

Yeah we really need to step it up. Sadly we'll never live up to the shining example of Tiananmen Square. Peak human rights!

Ah I was just kidding, you probably mean the ability for Soviets to assemble. Like that one time they all banded together to put an end to.....the Soviet Union. In that case yes we have much to aspire to!

SomeAmateur ,

You guys better be careful. From what I've heard Canada and Australia aren't exaclty shining beacons of freedom as of late. Love you both tho

It's interesting to think about. Banks can track where a person buys and how much is spent. Individual businesses gather data on customers in various ways that bigger corporations can pay to look at. But there's only so much one business sees. And they might not want to share that in the first place.

Scanning trash for logos, barcodes etc can give you nice "average consumer" stats for an area without paying a bunch of companies. It doesn't matter if a bottle of sunscreen came from a small business, walmart or bought online direct, they'll know people in your area bought it and used it.
