I've heard of women who were pirate captains, ex-slaves who were pirate captains, gay pirate captains, and pirate captains of pretty much all races...

...so yeah, pirates, surprisingly open work place.

I think they were also known to attack privateers, who were state authorised pirates run by the monarchies and colonial governments of the world.

It has been pointed out that pirates are a symbol of inclusivity. If you imagine a pirate, chances are they have a disability, typically from an occupational injury (a missing eye, hand or leg), and yet they kick ass and strike fear into the establishment.

Pirates were generally pretty inclusive, progressively so. I don't think it's mocking, it's just silly.
