No. The 6502 itself is probably the simplest CPU to be used at scale in home computers: it has only 3 registers, a handful of instructions (you don’t even get multiplication) and is made of around 3,500 transistors (less than half the number in the Z80). All the things that gave the C64, Apple II, BBC Micro, NES and such their recognisable qualities were provided by support chips used alongside the 6502.

6502s were used in a lot of simple electronics after general-purpose computing moved on. They used them in battery-powered pocket chess computers in the late 80s, for example, and I wouldn’t be surprised if cycle computers or microwave ovens contained them as well.

They might not need to open-source it: hackers have found ways of jailbreaking the installed Linux and are stepping up efforts for making it reusable. It’s a rather feeble SoC, so there won’t be a huge number of applications for it, but there will be some.

They should at least release data sheets and any bootloader signing keys, allowing people to reuse the devices for other purposes. If you could replace the firmware, I’m sure you could use it for controlling your home automation setup or displaying the weather/news/train times/other info (or possibly other tasks depending on what’s in the SoC). Now, alas, it’s just e-waste.

4 panel comic by War and Peas. 1. Panel shows two pirates, the first pirate speaks "Captain, our rivals have been calling us names again." 2. It has been pointed out that pirates are a symbol of inclusivity. If you imagine a pirate, chances are they have a disability, typically from an occupational injury (a missing eye, hand or leg), and yet they kick ass and strike fear into the establishment.

So despite climate change, Australia's federal government has just committed an extra $3.25 billion into building a toll road and a 20-lane freeway widening.

For those who wonder why Aussies think toll roads are a scam (https://aus.social/@LesserAbe@lemmy.world/112405373613706682), here's a great example of why.

"Pouring an extra $3.25 billion worth of federal funds into Melbourne’s North East Link is a good use of taxpayer money, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has insisted, despite the project’s cost doubling just a few months ago.

...

"The North East Link – which includes 6½ kilometres of tunnels – will stretch from Bulleen to Greensborough. It will widen the Eastern Freeway by up to 20 lanes.

"Allan revealed in December that the 10-kilometre toll road had more than doubled in cost since it was first announced.

"The toll road was initially budgeted at $10 billion and reassessed in 2019 at $15 billion. But the government revealed last year that the updated cost estimate was $26 billion."

Is the firmware enclosed in a SOC with no way of reading/extracting it? If not, if all else fails, someone will extract it and dissect it with Ghidra or something, extracting whatever encryption keys are needed. If so, and there aren’t any documented side-channel attacks for reading the firmware from this SOC, if firmware updates exist, they too constitute an attack surface. (They probably would be encrypted, but how strongly?)

If old process nodes like that still exist, perhaps someone should periodically do a run of old chips which are getting scarce, like 6581s or fragile ASICs from vintage computers. I know people who grew up coding Z80 assembly on their home computers have fond memories of it, but there’s a glut of deadstock Z80s that won’t run out for a decade.

They were in the process of unionising in Sweden, when the layoffs dropped. Some months later, Spotify cancelled talks about the proposed collective agreement, insisting a statement that Spotify employees don’t need unions because their working conditions are already exceedingly generous.

(A bit of background: workplace collective agreements are commonplace in Sweden. Spotify, though, seems to have tried to import US union-busting practices, not unlike Tesla.)

In the age of the Steam Deck and Proton, the Windows API has largely been demoted to a virtual machine that is already implemented on Linux. Given that some 5% of the market play on Linux, game publishers have an incentive to not write their Windows code in such a way that it breaks on Proton.

The German compound noun thing also works in other Germanic languages like, say, Dutch, Swedish and Old English. You can blame the Normans (i.e. a bunch of snobbish Vikings who, a generation earlier, decided to speak only French) for modern English’s lack of them.

North Germanic, descended from Old Norse; there are varying and debatable degrees of mutual intelligibility between it, Danish and Norwegian, to the point that instructions on product packages sold in the three countries are sometimes written as one phrase for all three, with differing words written with slashes, and linguists occasionally lump all three together as “Scandinavian”.

Out of interest, what did you think it was if not Germanic?
