Sometimes I have doubts if some people I see posting here on Lemmy actually work. It seems like y'all live in this Wonderland where finding new jobs is extremely easy and convincing whole companies to use free software is easy like sending an e-mail. I'm honestly envious.

But still, the fact that the person already said that not using Windows isn't an option and you persisted questioning wasn't very nice, so I see no reason for you to be rude and offensive when someone call out your behavior. Please keep it civil.

I don't know why he has so many followers. I think it is just because he says what people want to hear, but it doesn't have any depth to it.

Nothing against him personally, I just think he's annoying and also has some entrepreneur vibes that I hate. I am grateful for the right to repair activism, but the latest videos that I watched were just shallow complaining. Justified of course but... yeah.

Isn't there a way to allow the devices to be accessed through the local network? It doesn't need to interfere with the data collection or the encryption, you are just allowing the user to access the device locally, before it is even encrypted to be sent to the servers.

To be honest if I am choosing between two devices and one supports HA and the other doesn't, the choice is quite obvious. I think one way to convince your higher ups is that you will be more appealing to a big niche of tech users that have elaborate IOT setups (which means $$$).

We recently purchased the family plan even if it is quite expensive for a couple. Reading this of course made me feel better about it.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with...

If this means that I might be able to use NFC payments because alternatives to Google Pay will exist, I am very happy. Hopefully this will also make possible to F-droid to provide auto updates.

I'm confused why you would assume that there isn't any context where someone might need to store their cards on their phone instead of carrying a wallet. Have you considering asking why instead of assuming everyone is like you? Is amazing when you get to know other perspectives.

Templa ,

Yes I realized that, the one that doesn't is Aurora I think

It seems many banks/providers used to had this functionality and just stopped maintaining in favor of Google/Apple Pay.

Hopefully they decide to do it again.

Jokes aside:

Unlike Google, XScreenSaver will never try to make WebP a thing.

Is WebP bad? If so, why?

I don't disagree with him in many aspects but I also think he's a hypocrite in many aspects so...It just led me to stop caring about whatever he does/says

    People like to take sides on the internet without doing proper research too, I think. I had this idea that Micay was toxic and kind of avoided the project for a long time. My conclusions after doing more research is that he is someone that lacks social skills and is indeed very opinionated. However, GrapheneOS isn't made for privacy activists that can afford to use Mull instead of Vanadium, for example. GrapheneOS is made for people that cannot afford to have a phone that might leak information that could endanger their lives.

    If Mikay was someone like Palmer Luckey which is a biggot that's a whole different story. I am glad I gave GrapheneOS a try and I am very happy using it, even if it is kind of overkill for my privacy needs.

    Your option is having a financial institution that provides tap to pay on their own app. Otherwise you will have to start carrying cards again.

    Edit:

    You might want to check this thread on the official forums which has the discussions regarding NFC payments.

    I have seen people recommending the usage of a smart watch such as Garmin which has their own Pay application. You can check their compatibility list here. I didn't have any luck because they support like 5 cards in Canada.

    Templa ,

    For nfc payments? I have seen people making it work for boarding passes and fidelity cards but not for that

    I'm assuming you didn't put a lot of thought in this comment.

    Mastodon is great but expecting the majority of people to use it is just naive. I'm all in for tools that disrupt the usage of walled gardens.

    This is cool. I switched from Winamp to Foobar2000 at some point, I don't really remember the reason.

    I've had this happen and did upload the selfie but I think it happened because I was blocking some extra stuff that it was flagging my account to be automated

    Does anyone know of a FOSS Firewall for Windows

    I currently use TinyWall Firewall, it works very well, it's small/portable, no complaints I even donated to the Dev but I would really prefer open source, also it needs to be user friendly like TinyWall so my non-tech family members can/will use it like they do with TinyWall.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    I knew I was going to find a comment like this and I am disappointed that I did.

    It is hard for people to make transitions specially because they probably used Windows their own life. If they are asking for a FOSS firewall they most likely know they should transition to Linux at some point. There is actually no need to be the questioning person.

    I use arch btw

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    If you phrased your initial question differently or asked more details about OP's use case I think it would be completely fine. For example, they might be the "sys admin" where they live but their family members would be extremely annoyed if they tried to push Linux.

    Just kind tired of the "you cannot ask for FOSS alternatives if you are using something proprietary" and ended up venting because of your comment, that's all.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    This is Beehaw and we aim to be a nice place, right? So to me is kind of pointless this kind of discussions and I just meant to say that your comment sounded very judgemental and it could be written in a nicer way, that's all.

    Edit: Check OP's new comment on the post.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    Sorry you had to write this down, OP. On the internet people make a lot of assumptions. I hope you ended up getting a reply.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    I'm never said you were violating any rules, I was just expressing my opinion. If a person asks a question you can decide if you are going to be helpful and answer that question or make an statement regarding the irony of their question, which isn't helpful at all.

    You keep doing whatever you think it is best.

    The only reason I stopped using my iPod was because I lost it. 🥲

    It was my companion for many many years, I think I lost it in 2016 or something. I recently started considering getting another one, but I honestly wouldn't like having to install iTunes just for it.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    I completely forgot about that! I used foobar2000 a lot back in the day, but never managed how to manage my iPod through it, it was just my main music player.

    Is there a market for modified iPods? I'd love to get one already modified with the flash storage you mentioned

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    I always try to keep in mind there are a lot of people that are simply unable to transition to alternative apps because they lack knowledge and time to do research on such things. What we see through videos isn't the majority of the people, it is people that make content for the majority.

    People have hard times getting into more technical stuff already. Expecting people that are struggling to survive in capitalism to spend their free time learning about underground alternatives or to turn into sys admins and host their own stuff is out of touch if reality in my opinion.

    Edit: just wanted to add, I wouldn't say the problem is on the people, but on big tech that predates on them

    I stopped using it after I was having many crashing issues (it was from upstream, but at the time upstream was already updated and it took weeks for them to release an update). Since Mull is just Firefox with a few settings changed I decided to use regular firefox, but it seems that on Android if you are really rad about privacy you should be using Vanadium (which unfortunately is Chromium based)

    I'm surprised Embraer isn't more popular.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    Even before all this I always used to prefer traveling through Embraer planes. I have an irrational fear of flying after an awful turbulence I've experienced.

    There's this air company in Brazil called Azul and their fleet is pretty much a mix of Embraer and Airbus.

    Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule?

    If the owner of the standard notes will now be a proton, doesn't that contradict this principle? I have a proton email account but I don't want it linked to my standard notes account. I don't strongly trust companies that offer packaged services like google or Microsoft....
