The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Is there a reason it needs to be fresh water? Is sea water less effective?

Oh makes sense.

ChatGPT Answers Programming Questions Incorrectly 52% of the Time: Study (gizmodo.com)

The research from Purdue University, first spotted by news outlet Futurism, was presented earlier this month at the Computer-Human Interaction Conference in Hawaii and looked at 517 programming questions on Stack Overflow that were then fed to ChatGPT....

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but if we could get to a future with algorithms so good they are essentially a talking version of all human knowledge, this would be a great thing for humanity.

There’s this series of books called the www series, about AI before AI was the new hot thing every company needed to mention at least once to get stock price to go up.

Tap for spoiler

Essentially an AI popped up on the internet, which was able to read everything. Due to this it was able to combine data in such a way that it found things like a cure for cancer by combining research papers that no one had ever combined. This is a very bad explanation, but I could see how this makes sense.

Spoiler free explanation: no human has read everything, I think there could be big implications if there’s an AI that has that can see connections that no one ever has.

Thekingoflorda ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

But let’s say some company did it, a perfect AI that has read everything and doesn’t hallucinate.

A researcher is working on some experiments, if they could just route it through the AI, and it would annalyse if that experiment was even possible, maybe already done, this could speed up research.

With a truly perfect model, which the tech bros are aiming for, I can see the potential for good. I ofcourse am skeptical such a model is possible, but… I kinda see why it would be nice to have.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

Tack "&udm=14" on to the end of a normal search, and you'll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

wait, is the AI thing automatically enabled in the US?

Thekingoflorda ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

now that's just stupid.

Thekingoflorda ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

Crazy. Normally it's annoying that tech companies limit some features to US only, this time I'm all for it.

ASML’s machines are very advanced using a lot of specialized parts (who’s export is probably also banned) and taking a lot of skilled labour to make. China will probably be able to eventually get there, but it’s going to be a while.

Samsung started with 5nm in 2018, so that’s still 6 years behind.

Thekingoflorda ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

Yea that is true, but in smaller form factors a 10 nm chip wouldn’t be sufficient anymore. They generally consume more energy or they are slower.

If consumers had the choice between the two chips they generally choose the smaller ones because of their inherent benefits.

Thekingoflorda ,

Because they don’t want to pay for running AI in the cloud.

I think they mean without a eartip. The airpod pro’s have them but all their other earbuds do not have eartips.

    I think the thing about not allowing people to block admins is baked into lemmy itself, not something set up for this instance in particular, so not much we can do about that.

    Ex-Activision CEO Bobby Kotick looks to buy TikTok amid shutdown fears - Dexerto (www.dexerto.com)

    TikTok has been at the center of controversy for the United States government in the last few years. Particularly, members of the Senate believe China-based parent company ByteDance could spy on its users and share information with the Chinese Government....

    They’ll merge it with yt shorts, then rename yt short to tiktok (new) then separate the two again and then shut down tiktok and 1 year later yt shorts as well.

    I like the browser, but I liked it more when they where focussing more on the browser itself instead of the AI stuff they’ve been doing recently.

    I like the features, but no way that it’s going to stay free.

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    Yea that’s what happens if the company at least tries to make it repairable and not made by exploited people.

    Just chiming in here: there are at the moment some problems with federation. I’m an admin on LW, and generally we remove spam pretty quickly but it currently doesn’t federate quickly. We are working on solutions that temporarily fix it till the lemmy devs themselves fix it.

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    Yea, no clue, very annoying to deal with. I've been building tools to allow us to delete them faster. Some information on how it currently works: if a post get's reported more than 3 times in a short time, some people get notified and they can identify whether it's spam and then instantly delete it. We also have an automod made by Rooki which has a list of blacklisted URL's. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this, feel free to share.

    Been working on that (:

    And you should keep in mind that these things are only sold in the USA at this point

    Does adminning a niche social media also count?

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    Of course I can’t prove any of this, we only have you to say this is what happened, but of course this thin skinned and childish mod won’t.

    Why not? The modlog is public, so if you have any actual evidence, feel free to share.

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    I really doubt that is marketing. I just think that’s an over-enthusiastic user.
