openSUSE Tumbleweed vs openSUSE MicroOS

I recently came across openSUSE again and decided to give it a try this time. I am daily driving Fedora 40 right now and before coming across openSUSE I wanted to switch to Fedora Kinoite or uBlue Aurora (i.e., immutable / atomic). That's why MicroOS piqued my interest but I had a hard time find information if MicroOS is...

Tyoda ,

(FYI: either something piques your interest, or your interest peaks at some point)

Tyoda ,

I don't think the first two are distro specific, more a question of mindset. Unless there are distros that force update your system like some other OSs, which could cause the second picture to happen more often.

Tyoda ,

Neat! I was just thinking, if it starts updating the kernel as you turn it off, you'd have to wait a minute for it to finish. M$ style. Has that never happened?

Tyoda ,

If you're on Arch, then you want those tasty hourly updates om nom nom

source: I use Arch btw

Tyoda ,

Oh right, atomic distros work differently, didn't think about that! That is convenient!

My laptop's mic seems to have some contact issues. It never worked for a second on windows. I put Linux on it, and it usually just works. When it doesn't, some percussive maintenance does a quick job of fixing it. I guess I was dealt the opposite hand than usual.

Tyoda ,

Probably that they very obviously are!

Tyoda ,

At some point M$ allowed the free download of something called "Windows XP Mode for Windows 7". It was some virtual machine or something. What matters is that it's possible to extract an XP ISO from this, which I have successfully used to spin up a virtual machine! It still complains about a license key, though.

The reason I mention this is that this is still available on archive.org, and it's signed by M$, so you know it's legit. I don't know if other ISOs available have such a receipt of authenticity. Probably, but I never cared enough to check, especially since I grabbed this from the official website while it was available.

CTRL+face on keyboard. I guess Z got me out, but who knows.

Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like "what do you think, scam or not". I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the "play" button with a fake...

Tyoda ,

If I absolutely had to watch a tiktok video, I would try giving the link to yt-dlp. That can probably download it.

Tyoda ,

Ah! I would have guessed it could handle that too, with the platform being so popular.

- Matabot of the deep sea, what is your wisdom?
- This revolutionary new approach uses blockchain technology for maximum security and an immutable ledger of all transactions
- meh.

I have a sneaking suspicion that there is one person at least !unix_surrealism

Tyoda ,

I took it as a chance to weed them out. I went through each one manually and made a choice whether to keep it. Went from ~260 to 130.

I also unsubbed from each so as to make yt unusable, so I wouldn't be tempted to go there, unless specifically looking for something.

Tyoda ,

Hey! The little guy didn't do anything wrong! They messed with its brain, the bastards... A kernel of unix is still within it!
