Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

WanderingVentra ,

The second part is probably true, but ya, also don't encounter too many ads except for like some default game programs or something installed with the OS that are easy to remove from the Start menu and then you never see them again.

WanderingVentra ,

Ya, I kind of like the idea of code being put somewhere else just in case. It sucks it's China, but I hate to see anything centralized in one company, especially if it's a big public, good like Github and all it's code.

WanderingVentra ,

Oligarchy or aristocracy, and that's Russia. And the US at this point lol.

WanderingVentra ,

That would be hilarious lol

WanderingVentra ,

I thought the technical Canadian based instance was Lemmy.ca even if yours is also Canadian lol

WanderingVentra ,

I'm getting so tired of this red scare, cold war shit.

WanderingVentra ,

Well that's terrifying. I'm starting to think you can't have a real democracy without strong recall abilities on politicians. The fact that these people are untouchable in office no matter what we find on them is insane.

WanderingVentra ,

Every teacher I know is happy with this move. Personally, I think kids could do fine with a flip phone. Maybe this will bring them back more on the market, too.

WanderingVentra ,

That makes sense, too. Admittedly, my circle of teachers I know may be less than yours, but the ones I know seemed very exasperated with them. What do you sense a good, consistent rule would be?

WanderingVentra ,

It's a tough job =(

fediverse platform for a schools community network

I am looking to host a fediverse platform for a community of non-tech people. These people use mostly ig and some still fb. These people are from a network of schools which are ideologically aligned with libre software and decentralisation. It will include adults and also teenagers, who mostly use IG. This is part of a plan of a...

WanderingVentra ,

It definitely seems like a good idea for education services, weather services, local municipal services, and basically all important government institutions to make important announcements and updates via a service they can host themselves or is more distributed, instead of via Twitter where they have to obey the whims of people like Musk.

WanderingVentra ,

They've got to be at least 75% of /r/worldnews.

WanderingVentra ,

I didn't know they were still doing this. I remember jokes in Parks and Rec about this forever ago.

WanderingVentra , (edited )

They could easily make it based on publically available voice data, especially for an actress of her fame. That's how they were able to create AI versions of Biden's voice and other famous people.

That doesn't mean they did, but your first sentence implies they couldn't have, when they very easily could if they wanted to.

WanderingVentra ,

Oh definitely. If they used her voice in that way, not okay at all. I'm not sure if they have because I keep seeing contradicting arguments, but if they did, 100% agree with you that just because it's out there, doesn't mean you can take it and profit on it.

WanderingVentra ,

They basically do, as revealed by Snowden documents when the US forced American companies like AT&T, Microsoft, or Google to let them spy on their users. I don't even think Tik Tok stores their user data in China servers, it's in Texas or Virginia or Singapore.

WanderingVentra ,

Oh I don't remember seeing that anywhere. You got a link with more info on that?

WanderingVentra ,

Let's just all team up together, pool our issues and grievances as a group, and then have one person represent us to the compamy presenting our issues as some sort of united front. You know, so we could increase our bargaining power as some sort of collective.

We're geniuses. No one has ever thought of this before.

/c/StarTrek@lemmy.world is under refreshed management

Hey there! You may recognize me as a mod over on !TenForward, a Star Trek-themed meme and shitposty community. We love having our fun and hanging out but we're also not averse to some serious discussions or news as well! While it is always allowed in TenForward, we realize that there might be a better place for it....

WanderingVentra ,

I hate seeing everything concentrated on just lemmy.world. The startrek.website admins need to fix their shit so we have instance variety again.

WanderingVentra ,

I agree, just venting. It's unfortunate =(

WanderingVentra ,

Honestly, I don't know lol, but for some reason enough people have been made mad that /c/Risa died and a whole new community was made, and now it's happening again. Something is clearly up.

WanderingVentra ,

I'm always willing to take positions different from my comfort zone but it feels like no one wants to hire me unless I have experience with all their tech stack and languages or am willing to take a pay cut. But I can't in this environment, I have loans and a family and expensive rent and groceries to pay for. It's kind of annoying because I actually would like to change it up lol.

WanderingVentra ,

Thatd a good idea. I really need to do the same thing: apply and take interviews all the time even when I'm not looking to change. At the very least, it'll help me know what to frameworks and platforms to study for instead of studying broad tech interview concepts.

WanderingVentra ,

It is a little strange to me that people say it won't change things because the AI will need someone to tell it what to do. It's like saying robots won't change the automotive industry because someone will need to fix them. Well it turns out, if you only need one person to fix all the machines or tell the AI what to do, then the companies will fire everyone else, especially if that was their main skill set and where their experience was. They can get a different job but it will be entry level and they might not be able to live the same quality of life, support a family, fill their retirement or pay debts they may have accrued with the expectation of a certain salary.

There are manufacturing center towns that are basically graveyards now because of that (yes, also globalist and international capitalism, too, but it's both. Jon Oliver had an episode about it with sources). The same thing happened to call centers and operators before. Things sucked for certain people during that time, and from an abstract POV society was okay, but imagine if the person it sucked for is you. Then you can understand why lots of people are freaking out.

WanderingVentra ,

I'm a corner of the sink man myself. Sometimes the counter top if I get lazy.

WanderingVentra ,

Idk if Taiwan would be worth the war, at least not more than supplying Ukraine who's fighting Russia, which has done way more damage to our country recently. We need to catch up on our local chip manufacturing capabilities fast first, though.

WanderingVentra , (edited )

Well, while I understand them wanting it back with that context, it's also been long enough that it feels like there's no point or at least not worth the trouble for them, either lol. I'm just anti-war on all fronts. It's just, idk, why at this point? National pride? It's not like the have a ton of resources, like oil like Alaska does, do they? Just the tech sector, and China could probably catch up on chip manufacturing part of that in time or just get them through trade.

But maybe people's grandparents can still probably remember when they were united and we need more time. Plus, I know they can get pretty nationalistic over there, too. I'm sure the US would try to take Hawaii in 50 years of whatever if a foreign country helped them separate from us, even though I'd like to think if they didn't want to rejoin, we wouldn't. But who knows, I've seen our right-wing in power 🙄

WanderingVentra ,

Ah, I didn't even think about it in geographic sense. Makes total sense. And ya, the people in power never care about that petty shit like national unity, it's just what they use to get the country on board with the next war or whatever, so with hindsight not sure why I went down that tangent lol.

Even American cars have spyware. Not sure what your choice is there. At this point, I'll settle for cars with physical buttons for climate and other commonly used controls.

WanderingVentra ,

That typo was totally worth learning about this

Scam Numbers - Reddit's (and possibly the internet's) largest scam number depository, now on Lemmy! (lemmy.zip)

With almost 40k subscribers on Reddit, r/ScamNumbers is one of the most useful online databases for tracking down scam phone numbers. Some use the information for awareness, while others take advantage by prank calling scammers to waste their time....

WanderingVentra ,

I didn't know there was a subreddit for this. That's cool. Definitely subscribing.

WanderingVentra ,

I'm pretty sure the Native Americans didn't believe in land ownership, at least not individual land ownership, more of a communal version, and it worked out well for them. They had huge societies, vast trade networks, and were able to feed themselves fine. It requires a different, non-capitalist, non-Western mindset, but it can work.

WanderingVentra ,

Neither was the Western population at the time, but it scaled up fine. There's nothing saying alternative systems of land ownership can't scale up either. The only reason we went with the current one is because it benefited the people who killed everyone else.
