Wes_Dev ,

It's such a disappointment. We try to build a system with people to entrust our well-being to and help those in need, but it always goes wrong.

From ancient times and the king's guard, to modern cops in some town. It always becomes corrupted.

Wes_Dev ,

Wasn't "woke" originally a good term until right wing screechers took it over at an insult? They do that a lot, every time some positive phrase or idea starts to gain traction. Seems intentional.

Wes_Dev ,

I'm familiar with the others, but what the heck did Kellog's do?

Wes_Dev ,

That's how it always starts though.

People use any device or service they want. It's a mix of crooks, tinkerers, journalists, etc.

A company or government makes some moral panic and pushes some privacy or civil rights erosion in the name of "security". The actual security benefit may or may not exist.

Then other companies do the same to keep up.

Then there's only a handful of companies not doing the thing, so anyone who doesn't want their privacy or civil rights eroded uses that, including crooks.

Then politicians and the other companies point to the holdouts as "PROOF!" their changes were good, because look how many crooks use that stuff! (The number of crooks hasn't changed, they've just been concentrated to a single location.) The moral panic deepens.

The non-criminal population that cares about their privacy or civil rights speak out, but get accused of secretly being criminals, or some other crap that can be used to dismiss their concerns. "If you have nothing to hide, why are you so upset?" and all that.

Now laws get passed to force all companies to do the same thing, to stop the criminals! But let's not worry about anyone else. The tinkerers, journalists, privacy-advocates, etc. They don't matter.

The law gets passed, and now all toasters are legally required to record your breakfast conversations, for a silly example.

Wes_Dev ,

Ah yeah, propaganda and stereotyping.

Wes_Dev ,

I wish mine did that. I said one thing about Trump not having as much money as he claims, and my mom got all insulted. She said that maybe we shouldn't talk about politics, etc, and I agreed to be nice. I don't like to talk politics at all, even with like-minded people. But she'll blame a company getting hacked and losing my personal info on democrats, and tell me that she can't wait until all democrats die off.

But now she just spouts of any shit that comes to her mind without a care, while I'm keeping to our dealt and shutting up. I doubt she even remembers our promise, because the moment it wasn't convenient for her, she dropped it.

Wes_Dev ,

I mean, I freaking love how AI is advancing, but I also think unions are basically a requirement for all workers at this point.

Besides, hasn't the point of machines always been to reduce the workload on people?

I welcome some kind of UBI, or maybe a post-money society that uses AI to handle most jobs and lets people pursue what they want to do with their lives.

Wes_Dev ,

Sitcom of chimps in the big city running a shady laundromat.

Wes_Dev ,

For those who don't know, In the US, the two political parties basically switched sides at one point. I only skimmed, but here's an article about it:

https://www.livescience.com/34241-democratic-republican-parties-switch-platforms.html

But I'd rather look at what modern people are doing and saying, than muse about what older generations would have wanted or done.

Wes_Dev ,

"It's so funny! Sheldon reminds me of you!"

Yeah, never watched it, but heard this enough to hate the show with a passion.

Wes_Dev ,

...I don't want to date women, so I know know how that's relevant.

Wes_Dev ,

So, let me unpack what happened, from my point of view. I'm not complaining or anything, just pointing out how it seemed from my end.

I made a comment that I personally didn't like the show because of how many times people around kept saying I was like the main character.

You replied directly to me implying that nerds should like the show because it normalizes dating them. (Which I agree is a good thing.)

I replied to say that doesn't apply to me, and I'm not sure why it was relevant to my comment.

Finally, you left a comment to call me names.

Do you see how that entire interaction makes no sense from my side of things? I said that I didn't like a show, and you inserted yourself into the conversation to complain that hot women should want to date me because of the show. Then, when I said that had nothing to do with what I was saying, you insulted me.

So, like, why?

Wes_Dev ,

Oh. Makes sense. To be honest, I really didn't care enough to bother checking their profile or any other comments. Just saw the response today and wanted to try and offer some sort of olive branch or something. idk

Wes_Dev ,

This creates a single backdoor for all sign-ons on your phone.

Wes_Dev ,

"BUT MAH FREEDOMS!"

Wes_Dev ,

Oh, this reminds me. I was asked to go to a Chiropractic "doctor" this weekend for a check up. That's nonsense to begin with, but I went anyway.

She asked about my back hurting, and I mentioned that I threw it out really badly when I got COVID a year or two ago, and was stuck in bed coughing super hard for a week. Her immediate response was "I've heard the vaccine can do that."

... Like, fucking what? How god damn stupid do you have to be to hear "I threw my back out coughing really hard." and instantly try to insert your anti-science bullshit into the conversation?

Wes_Dev ,

I honestly thought I might have to, but it took months to get the appointment, and I didn't want to have to wait all over again and just hope I got a better location next time.

Wes_Dev ,

Trust me, it wasn't my choice.

Wes_Dev ,

Nicely done. The best case scenario is sugar. Most of the time, it's nothing but water, and maybe a single drop of 100x already diluted more water, that maybe once had something non-water in it. That is, of course, assuming the machines doing the literal magic shaking didn't spill the "active ingredient".

Wes_Dev ,

No worries. The appointment was set for me by a local government agency. That's about all I wanna say about it, though.

Wes_Dev ,

The fact that Chiropractic is pseudoscience; realigning your spine to allow magical spirit energy to flow better, because they think every single aliment from acne to cancer is caused by blocked chi flow, isn't enough?

Wes_Dev ,

😆

Wes_Dev ,

When companies tell you they respect your privacy and you should give them your data, you tell them it doesn't matter. Because policies can change, and at the end of the day, your privacy isn't always up to an single company.

Wait. This was last year, so not the capitol riot. What happened in January last year? I'm in a decent mood today. Just going to skip looking deeper into this one. I have Factorio to play!

Wes_Dev ,

The headline is ambiguous here. The CEO in question is from Onerep, not Mozilla.

Wes_Dev ,

People. This is talking about the CEO for Onerep, not the CEO for Mozilla.

Wes_Dev ,

Context. People seemed to be complaining about Mozilla's CEO. That's why I wanted to clarify for anyone reading the comments first.

Wes_Dev ,

You're not wrong. But also keep in mind that headlines prime readers to think in a certain way before they even get a chance to read the context. No one will admit it, because headlines make money, but all it takes is one carefully worded headline to change how people interpret, feel about, and react to a story. Even when you're aware of this trick, it's impossible to avoid all the time. That's just how our brains work.

Wes_Dev ,

Oh! I think I see what you mean now. I think I get it.

Wes_Dev ,

I know this story is more-so about a trojan in a trusted place, and not general security, but I have an anecdote to share.

So, time to fess up here. I previously complained about Google trapping me in captcha-hell for enabling Ublock Origin.

I was wrong.

Turns out that I had visited a movie streaming site a while before to watch a season of some show, I forget which. Without any downloads or noticeable input on my part. My Linux box apparently got hacked/malware. All I did was click the occasional "I am a human" box on the website, and sit back with popcorn.

I found out when my ISP starting blocking IP addresses some time later. I checked my modem's logs, and they showed some unexplained traffic to impossible "unassigned" IP addresses afterward. I didn't notice for a while.

I was stupid. Even worse, my phone also started behaving badly after that. I think I watched the last few episodes in bed, so must have infected that too.

Don't assume any system is automatically safe.

Wes_Dev ,

I hope so. It's more likely something infected Firefox itself, and didn't get into the OS. But when I checked the modem logs, it happened up to a couple of months after the fact. That's worrying.

What's even more worrying is that a couple of websites told me I had an IP address that didn't match my home IP, but would provide the correct one if I refreshed the page a couple of times. So some kind of covert proxy or VPN type of thing was happening.

I ended up just wiping everything, to be safe. Still a bit paranoid though.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

Wes_Dev ,

When I saw this on a custom ROM, it was basically the same thing, but said that my financial institution or whoever had admin access to my phone, including seeing texts and everything else, until my phone was paid off. Still not sure why that was there in a custom ROM, but I ended up not using it.

Wes_Dev ,

I lived across the street from a department store, a grocery, some pizza places, a "smoke" shop, video game stores, and everything else I could want on a normal day. It was amazing. I walked everywhere except to work. I miss living there. The main downside was that it was in Florida.

Wes_Dev ,

Nah, it was Orlando, but not the city proper, more like one of the smaller areas around the actual city. Trying not to give too much away, but it was near Altamonte Springs.

Wes_Dev ,

lol, no prob.

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

Wes_Dev ,

“I would advise against playing any games protected by EAC or any EA titles”, they went on to say.

Easy. I specifically blocked all titles with the tags "EA" and "EA Play" on Steam. Never have to worry about it.

Wes_Dev ,

Yup. This is essentially the same as people suddenly screaming about "WHITE PRIDE!!!!" in response to things like Black Live Matter.

The entire point is a minority not letting the majority shame or otherize them. The the majority freaks out and responses with "ME TO BUT BETTER THAN YOU DID IT!".

It's pathetic.

Huh, thought I posted this already, but I guess I forgot to.

I've been on food stamps before. Basically, I said that my parents ranted and complained about "other people" scamming the system and not deserving the welfare, but I did. They also were shocked at how little I actually got each month, because they assumed you were supposed to get a lot more money.

    Wes_Dev ,

When I had a job making $7.35 an hour at a dollar store and applied for food stamps in NC, I got $16.00 a month.

    Wes_Dev ,

I'm sorry, I was going to reply, but my printer had a forced update and then detected an unauthorized cyan cartridge from a third party, shut down, and called the police to arrest me for violating HP's terms of servitude, er "service".

    Wes_Dev ,

I haven't bought a printer in years, but had to service a crappy one for work. I'm very interested in this ink bottle refill type of printer. That honestly sounds perfect. Didn't know it was a thing. Thank you.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

    Wes_Dev ,

Legitimately the only reason I still have a Windows 10 ISO and key sitting on my long term storage drive is because I fear that I may have to install it to use VR whenever I get a new kit.

    Please Valve. Pretty please....

Actually, didn't Facebook buy the lens company Valve was donating to and working with to develop their new VR lens tech? I forgot about that. Another reason to hate Facebook. (I refuse to call it the M word.)

    Wes_Dev ,

    Well fuck.

    Wes_Dev ,

    😍

    Wes_Dev ,

Pretty simple, actually. Content farms push as much media out as possible to get as much attention and views as they can. This generates ad revenue. Advertisers pay Google for the ads, Google pays content creators.

AntiMicroX - Anyone with experience using controller remapping applications?

Hi Beehaw! I've finally made the switch to Linux, I'm using Nobara OS based on Fedora. It's been very nice so far (I had tried to go with Arch but Nvidia drivers ehhh). I'm running into issues remapping controls to my Xbox Adaptive Controller. Was hoping someone here might have some input....

    Wes_Dev ,

Sad to see this fork of SC Controller is now archived. It provides an Appimage version, and also worked with my PS4 controller. Credit to Kozec, the original creator.

    https://www.patreon.com/kozec

    https://github.com/Ryochan7/sc-controller

There was also Qjoypad, but I haven't used it in a while.

Basically, the game is reading the raw controller input as well as the translated virtual controller input. I've run into that a lot before on other games. The fix I found is usually to try another mapper, or to disable the controller in the game and map the controller to keyboard and mouse. It's annoying.

With luck, you -might- have luck with closing the game and setting up the controller mapper, then start the game. If the mapping program provides an Xinput option, try toggling that and see if it helps.

    Good luck.

EDIT: Did Kozec stop developing the app? I used to support them on Patreon before I lost my job. There haven't been any official updates in a while. Sad day. :(
