I've installed Linux on my dad's surface 2. He's more than happy, I bassicaly could'nt do anything with it because how slow Windows had became.

Yerbouti , to Technology in YouTube's next move might make it virtually impossible to block ads

Ok got you. So you'd rather stare at a black screen for 30 seconds every 5 minutes than switch to an alternative where you can have exactly the same service, but without advertising and where control is based on the user rather than a multi-billion dollar corporation. So you want youtube and nothing else, but you refuse to support youtube. Basically, we're back at good old advertising, were people will pick up their phone during a break and wait for the program to resume. But you don't see things you didn't ask for! One last thing, did you know that "Vinegar is perhaps the best way to clean a toilet tank, as it’s naturally acidic. It removes lime and calcium deposits, and it’s a natural antibacterial. Pour two cups of vinegar into the tank, allow to sit for an hour, scrub, and flush to rinse." You're welcome!!

Ok hear me out: an add-on that promotes "Watching less youtube!!!!". Isn't that genius? It could be 50/50. 15 seconds of blackscreen for people like you who enjoy starring at it, and 15 seconds of "less screen time" promotion. That way you are frequently reminded that you could do better things with your time. Example : "You have starred at a black screen for XX minutes today. Did you know that a basic ukulele cost around 30$ and you can learn playing by investing as low as 30 minutes per day?" On top of it, I will ad a functionality that let you customize the color of the blackscreen! What do you think, are we getting somewhere or what?

Yerbouti , to Technology in YouTube's next move might make it virtually impossible to block ads

What if I offer you an add-on that would promote healthy life-habits instead of black screen? Would you be interested in that? For example, it's important to squeeze the sponge after using it, this would be super useful to remind you about it!That's just an example, there are dozens of small tips like that requires a daily reminder.

Not if it brings people to a user controlled FLOSS platform (Peertube for example ) and make them ditch Youtube. We need to move the viewers and content to FLOSS alternatives so anything that will bring new users is good. Youtube will be the biggest battle IMO. Plus it would be kind of fun to trash Youtube on their own platform. Let's settle for an optional functionality.

Why not use that screen time to promote alternative to YouTube?. Or even a simple Fuck google screen : " insert why google sucks here".

Yerbouti , to Technology in A social app for creatives, Cara grew from 40k to 650k users in a week because artists are fed up with Meta’s AI policies | TechCrunch

I personally think we have reach a point where we actually can do this. User controlled project can now keep up and sometime beat big business. Look at Asahi Linux, a small group of nerds are reverse-enginering Apple's latest tech, and allowing us to do all kind of things Apple never wanted us to do with these machine. Mastodon, Lemmy, Nextcloud, are all open-source projects keeping up with huge company.

Yerbouti , to linuxmemes in Me with my VR sim addiction

I'm actually really impressed by how smooth it is, especially since I use ALVR wireless on my home network, with an NVIDIA. It does require some tweaking but once it works it goes really well. I've tested 4-5 games and it's super smooth. Better yet, I can use my quest to monitor and play projects directly in Godot while I develop them! It's awesome. Goodbye forever windows. I already have 555 since I'm actually on Nobara, not sure it would have work with the previous driver.

    Good luck to you!

Yerbouti , to linuxmemes in Me with my VR sim addiction

I don't understand your VR reference, but I need to say it: yesterday I got VR working on Fedora!!! Like almost perfectly. Even for monitoring development in Godot! To me this is the final nail in window's coffin, deleting it today.

    Obligatory Fuck Spotify comment.

Yerbouti , (edited ) to Memes in Oh tell me again how it loads faster and takes up less resources

People saying FF is slower: like how much slower? are we taking like 14 millisecond slower? Cause everything seems pretty instantaneous here. Maybe its because i'm old enough to remember DSL and 56k internet, but I think FF os crazy fast and even if Chrome would be 25% faster I wouldn't switch to evil google for that.

Great. Consider yourself a member. " - Church of the flying spaghetti monster website.

That time I joined the Pastafarian church.

Yerbouti , to linuxmemes in A broken man

I'm starting to think I'm some kind of Linux Genius because I've installed Nobara, clicked on "yes" when it asked me if I wanna install the driver and voilà. Never had an issue except steam flickering but I really don't care.
