Yerbouti ,

I've installed Linux on my dad's surface 2. He's more than happy, I bassicaly could'nt do anything with it because how slow Windows had became.

Yerbouti ,

Why not use that screen time to promote alternative to YouTube?. Or even a simple Fuck google screen : " insert why google sucks here".

Yerbouti ,

Not if it brings people to a user controlled FLOSS platform (Peertube for example ) and make them ditch Youtube. We need to move the viewers and content to FLOSS alternatives so anything that will bring new users is good. Youtube will be the biggest battle IMO. Plus it would be kind of fun to trash Youtube on their own platform. Let's settle for an optional functionality.

Yerbouti ,

What if I offer you an add-on that would promote healthy life-habits instead of black screen? Would you be interested in that? For example, it's important to squeeze the sponge after using it, this would be super useful to remind you about it!That's just an example, there are dozens of small tips like that requires a daily reminder.

Yerbouti ,

Ok hear me out: an add-on that promotes "Watching less youtube!!!!". Isn't that genius? It could be 50/50. 15 seconds of blackscreen for people like you who enjoy starring at it, and 15 seconds of "less screen time" promotion. That way you are frequently reminded that you could do better things with your time. Example : "You have starred at a black screen for XX minutes today. Did you know that a basic ukulele cost around 30$ and you can learn playing by investing as low as 30 minutes per day?" On top of it, I will ad a functionality that let you customize the color of the blackscreen! What do you think, are we getting somewhere or what?

Yerbouti ,

Ok got you. So you'd rather stare at a black screen for 30 seconds every 5 minutes than switch to an alternative where you can have exactly the same service, but without advertising and where control is based on the user rather than a multi-billion dollar corporation. So you want youtube and nothing else, but you refuse to support youtube. Basically, we're back at good old advertising, were people will pick up their phone during a break and wait for the program to resume. But you don't see things you didn't ask for! One last thing, did you know that "Vinegar is perhaps the best way to clean a toilet tank, as it’s naturally acidic. It removes lime and calcium deposits, and it’s a natural antibacterial. Pour two cups of vinegar into the tank, allow to sit for an hour, scrub, and flush to rinse." You're welcome!!

A social app for creatives, Cara grew from 40k to 650k users in a week because artists are fed up with Meta’s AI policies | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

Artists have finally had enough with Meta’s predatory AI policies, but Meta’s loss is Cara’s gain. An artist-run, anti-AI social platform, Cara has grown from 40,000 to 650,000 users within the last week, catapulting it to the top of the App Store charts....

Yerbouti ,

I personally think we have reach a point where we actually can do this. User controlled project can now keep up and sometime beat big business. Look at Asahi Linux, a small group of nerds are reverse-enginering Apple's latest tech, and allowing us to do all kind of things Apple never wanted us to do with these machine. Mastodon, Lemmy, Nextcloud, are all open-source projects keeping up with huge company.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

Yerbouti ,

I don't understand your VR reference, but I need to say it: yesterday I got VR working on Fedora!!! Like almost perfectly. Even for monitoring development in Godot! To me this is the final nail in window's coffin, deleting it today.

Yerbouti ,

I'm actually really impressed by how smooth it is, especially since I use ALVR wireless on my home network, with an NVIDIA. It does require some tweaking but once it works it goes really well. I've tested 4-5 games and it's super smooth. Better yet, I can use my quest to monitor and play projects directly in Godot while I develop them! It's awesome. Goodbye forever windows. I already have 555 since I'm actually on Nobara, not sure it would have work with the previous driver.

Good luck to you!

People saying FF is slower: like how much slower? are we taking like 14 millisecond slower? Cause everything seems pretty instantaneous here. Maybe its because i'm old enough to remember DSL and 56k internet, but I think FF os crazy fast and even if Chrome would be 25% faster I wouldn't switch to evil google for that.

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. I am amaze by how complete this is!!! Apps let me configure my instance to fit everything I need, my workflow is now crazy fast and I can finally say goodbye to...

"So you want to be a Pastafarian?
Great. Consider yourself a member. " - Church of the flying spaghetti monster website.

That time I joined the Pastafarian church.

Yerbouti ,

I'm starting to think I'm some kind of Linux Genius because I've installed Nobara, clicked on "yes" when it asked me if I wanna install the driver and voilà. Never had an issue except steam flickering but I really don't care.

Yerbouti ,

The best tablet for a kid is no tablet. Screen time is a serious issue, dont mess with your kid's brain.

Yerbouti ,

No need to be an asshole and no need to presume I'm stupid. My kids dont have any tablet, we monitor screen/tv time and they play with my phone from time to time. That's enough for at least until they're 12. Every recent study shows that kids spend way too much time staring at screen.. It should be less then one hour a day, we keep it under two. I teach to young adult and this generation is litteraly addicted to their phone. Most have a 6 minutes attention spam and get anxious if they can't look at their phone for more then 10 minutes. Lot's of my friends kids have their own device and the parents keeps fighting with them over screen time. You do what you want, I'll keep my way.

Yerbouti ,

Of course. And I'm not saying you're a asshole, just that you sound like one.

Yerbouti ,

The problem is no other platform has that much content. Looking for an obscure scene from an old tv show? It's probably on YouTube. Wanna know more about Brigitte Bardot's career? Someone has a nice channel about her. The fact that the platform sucks amd his own by effing google doesn't change that there is just so much great niche content to be discovered. Hopefully we'll have a fully working foss alternative soon enough. I'll gladly pay for that if the money goes back to creators.

I hate Ticket master with passion. It's a personal life goal to see this disgusting business die.

Yerbouti ,

My students with the 8gb version struggle to do basic audio work with only a few plugins. This is BS from apple. Unless you use your computer only for web browsing, in which case you shouldn't get a stupid mac in the first place.

Yerbouti ,

One day, about 10 years ago, a guy pull out a knife to fight me in a subway station because he thought I was staring at him. Also got some nasty comments from women who thought I was looking at them when I didn't even notice their presence. Now I try to look at the floor in public in case I get lost in my mind.

Yerbouti ,

That's not really fair to Crowder. He's also a misogynist and racist piece of shit.

Music tech. teacher. I still rock my pair of 7506 from 20 years ago. They are not ideal for mixing bass tho, but otherwise really solid.

My new black cat friend is the chillest little buddy. Just saying.

    Yerbouti ,

Is that something Benny did? Gotta see that. This guy is full of not-so-surprising surprise.

    Yerbouti ,

Can I offer you an herbal tea? You seem stressed

    Yerbouti ,

So, if I was to download this, I could play all the Switch games? Sounds fun. I definitly wouldnt do it, I have too much respect for Nintendo, but if I had do it, what games do people would recommend, for example? I just want to bring awarNES on this.

    Yerbouti ,

Thanks. So, someone with a Steamdeck who would like to hurt Nintendo could play it just like that... Kind of crazy when you think about it.

    Yerbouti , (edited )

Would you believe that 2 days ago I didn't know this was a thing, and now, I have the software and a list of great games to play? Now I know, and I'm gonna have to make sure as many people as possible are aware of this. I think I'll make a document with simple download links, so people can make sure to block this content.

    Yerbouti ,

That sounds like something I would like to play. If only.....

    Yerbouti ,

Lol. I can't believe this so I will try it just to make sure you're wrong. But if it's true..... more people need to know about it.

    Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don't care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the "blue vs green bubble" drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure isn't...

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

    @fuck_cars

    Yerbouti ,

Linving in.Montreal. Hospital is about 25 walking. No university but one college under 15. I have the mf olympic stadium at a 10 minutes walk lol. Everything elses checks.

I teach my students to do manual save every 5 minutes. Just hit ctl+s and it's done. I basically save everytime I make a change in a project. I've learn the hard way while working on my thesis piece. Pretty much cost me 6 months of my life.

EDIT: Here is my save/backup story.

It was a composition, score + electroacoustic piece. (music master’s). At some point, I made a backup save on an external drive and forgot to change back the save location to my internal drive. One day I was using the vacuum cleaner, the hard disk power cable got caught in the vacuum cleaner and fell out. The external drive was broken, and I realized I had been making all of my saves on it. I’ve lost months of work, had to start over the piece, and I wasn’t able to submit my piece and thesis until the following semester. Now I teach computer music and I always tell that story to my students lol.

I had online backup of the written part. It was 12+ years ago so even that wasn't that common. But the main project was a composition, score + electroacoustic piece. (music master’s). My old boy Mr.Pouce would always be sitting there when I woke up. He passed 2 weeks ago at 15, R.I.P, good cat.

    Yerbouti ,

What do you people need prime for? Like, how many times a year do you order on amazon, and what products? Its really a mystery to me.

    Yerbouti ,

Is that really the chair you're going for?

    Yerbouti ,

Lol, I don't know where you get your information, but Quebecers who are for separation, like me, don't think they'll still have a Canadian passport, nor a job in the federal government. The fact that many in Canada would think we're that dumb only reinforces my conviction for separation. Dont get me wrong I think most Canadian people are really nice and I love them as brothers, but I just dont think they understand or care about our culture.
