They're Apple users. They aren't used to making any decisions when it comes to how their phones work

akilou ,

Don't tell them about all the different ad blockers we can use!

akilou ,

They work the way Apple wants them to

akilou ,

Man just needs to look at the moon to mark 28 days

akilou ,

Proton Mail is great. Can't compare to fastmail because I've never used it. But I enjoy being a paying customer instead of an advertising target and I use every product in their suite. Happy to answer more specific questions

akilou ,

Why would it be better?

akilou ,

You shouldn't be forced to be anonymous. If you want to pick the same username, you should be able to. But even so, there's still a required number at the end. So unless your username elsewhere ends in 2 digits and isn't already taken, then you can't pick it anyway

akilou ,

But doodlebug69 needs to accept a message from you before you can see their profile info.

akilou ,

That's not even how it works. No one sells your data, they sell access to what the data means.

akilou ,

“There is no technological or security justification for Apple mandating the use of iCloud for Restricted Files,” the lawsuit reads.

Wouldn't this argument also be true for everything else Apple restricts you from doing? Texting app, browser, Apple music on a home pod, etc? (I don't have a lot of good examples because I don't have an i thing but I'm sure there are more)

akilou ,

And they are really moving quickly with development. I feel like we're getting new features monthly

akilou ,

Both Signal and Threema can now theoretically ask Meta to open access for basic messaging interoperability

Why is it a one-way thing? Would Meta ever be in a position to force Signal to interoperate?

akilou ,

That's not really a problem. The biggest problem Signal has is people not caring about privacy enough to use another messaging app.

If Signal dropped the phone number requirement they'd get a handful more users. If people started to care about privacy they'd get millions of new users.

akilou ,

Forgot the part where they only get married for the tax benefits

akilou ,

Enshitifcation happens when users, advertisers, and investors are all competing for resources. With Proton, the users are the investors and there are no advertisers. Users are paying customers. It won't get enshitified.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@fuck_cars

akilou ,

All but 5: grocery story, mall, university, sports stadium, hospital

akilou ,

Is this in response to Skiff shutting down?

akilou ,

Not directly, I had to click through to a reddit post

akilou ,

Proton Drive can already automatically back up your phones photos. What else do you want? Albums?

akilou ,

OK, we'll they're not going to have that. They're just not going to implement facial recognition or search images by text or map the photos baed on the geolocation metadata. They're just fundamentally anti privacy features. I doubt they'd even implement photo editing and callages or whatever

akilou ,

You can't do it. Authy's FAQ page says it's for security reasons or whatever. I moved to Aegis a bit ago and had to do them one by one.

akilou ,

Electricity is already wired throughout, you just need to get to the closest plug. You have to run ethernet the whole length and it has length limitations. It's not trivial.

akilou ,

You could just pay $8.99 for one month, delete the data from the brokers, and cancel the plan

akilou ,

So is all the water it's holding back 😱

akilou ,

Must have been the cart full of groceries you're pushing....

akilou ,

There's no longer any way to see twitter things people send you without an account

Thank God. Maybe news articles will stop embedding tweets in articles.

akilou ,

So does whatever extension I have but I don't love it. I don't want the article to cite it at all

akilou ,

Enjoy your walled garden, you paid for it.

akilou ,

He saying he didn't pay for the walled garden he's now stuck in, he inhereted the iPhone.

When is a gift not a gift?

How a 27-Year-Old Codebreaker Busted the Myth of Bitcoin’s Anonymity (www.wired.com)

"This is the story of the revelation in late 2013 that Bitcoin was, in fact, the opposite of untraceable—that its blockchain would actually allow researchers, tech companies, and law enforcement to trace and identify users with even more transparency than the existing financial system."

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I've been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I'm looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will also...

akilou ,

You should definitely set up pihole but I don't think it'll block ads on streaming apps unless I'm wrong and someone can point me to something that explains how I can set that up.

akilou ,

Right. I mean, I looked into this a few years ago when I set it up and just accepted my fate

akilou ,

There's no way cans of cat food are cheaper then buying rice and dry beans in 50 lb bags

akilou ,

We don't need a theory, the answer is because of the chicken tax and the CAFE light truck loophole.

(I did not read the article)

akilou ,

Oof. This summarizes perfectly what it's like to give a shit about privacy.

akilou ,

Explain setting up a Raspberry Pi to your aunt and have her tell me it's a low pricw. Let alone lineage os, Jellyfin, Smart tube, and whatever else was in your list. And that solves just casting and steaming. Now do email, messages, browser tracking and fingerprinting, and everything else in our lives... It a lot. And honestly too much.

akilou ,

For large chains in the suburbs this is totally normal. They're basically warehouses in a sea of parking lots filled with shelves and racks. Sometimes there's carpeted areas in between the tile walkways or displays that go up high enough that it feels enclosed. For smaller or more urban stores, you don't see this kind of construction.
