Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough (www.xda-developers.com)

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

akilou ,

But do those benefits outweigh doubling or tripling the amount of RAM by simply inserting another stick that you can buy for dozens of dollars?

akilou ,

Proton just bought Standard Notes, so keep an eye out for changes there. Otherwise, I use Obsidian but I have it sync to my home server so I can access the same data from my phone and computer.

akilou ,

Same.

akilou ,

anyone who’s sent/received a garbage and cares enough knows to send via third party messaging apps anyway

Tell that to my in-laws

akilou ,

They just don't understand technology enough to appreciate the difference. You should see them drive with a navigation app

akilou ,

Guy shoulda used Signal

akilou ,

Interesting. I've never liked those notifications but I've seen people on Signal message boards defend them to the death. There's no privacy issue! You're only getting it because they're already saved in your phone! This is a good scenario to illustrate the point.

akilou ,

90%?

akilou ,

Those are not features, those are whole ass inventions

akilou ,

Awesome. Every so often I try a few different keyboards but always go right back to SwiftKey because the predictions are so good. I'll give this one a shot

akilou ,

It does swipe. If Swype is something different, then no

akilou ,

Fuck that. I'm not switching between apps for every god damn function my browser does. I intentionally decline to install apps when I can just use the browser.

akilou ,

The catch is that Turbo Tax and H&R Block are gonna lose a ton of revenue

akilou ,

Well, at least they aren't outright throwing the functionality in the trash.

Yet

akilou ,

Proton. Bitwarden

akilou ,

The difference is their business model is privacy. Google's business model is advertising. I'm Proton's customer, but advertisers are Google's customers.

akilou ,

We need more public transportation, not privatized bus routes

akilou ,

Yes. Allowing Uber to do this justifies a disinvestment in public services. "why should we spend more on bus service when no one rides it anyway? They're all taking Uber bus"

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog (blog.mozilla.org)

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

akilou ,

This is why I don't feel bad about pirating

akilou ,

You could have before. I moved from Authy to Aegis a few months ago

akilou ,

Then how do you secure the backup without 2FA?

Or is it 2FA all the way down?

akilou ,

Aegis doesn't run on your desktop using the same key, it's just a key stored there, right?

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

akilou ,

I disagree. I've been using SwiftKey for years and it's decent. It's by no means mind blowing, especially given the current state of affairs with LLMs, but it's not crap.

akilou ,

OK, yeah, try not relying on any company for any service. Proton is as reliable as it gets.

akilou ,

The advisor said that "it is a known issue in the Cybertruck that when you do a screen reset, instead of resetting in the standard two minutes, it takes five hours."

Proton: "Introducing Dark Web Monitoring for credential leaks"

@privacy

akilou ,

Also, I have a ton of aliases through Proton. I'm not going to put each on into haveibeenpwned

akilou ,

You should go down below 69% and then charge back up to it close to 4:20

akilou ,

It's because the explanation in the last panel should have happend before the 80s

Apple Removes WhatsApp, Threads, Telegram, and Signal from China App Store, says it complied with orders from the Chinese government (arstechnica.com)

Apple said it complied with orders from the Chinese government to remove the Meta-owned WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China. Apple also removed Telegram and Signal from China....

akilou ,

You can't even sideload on ios can you? So if Apple removes it from the app store you're shit outta luck?

Fuck apple. But it stuff like this that makes me have no sympathy for people who buy iphones.

Edit: also fuck China. Just being thorough

akilou ,

What a stupid thing. What is this preventing? Like if Apple is trying to prevent you from side loading a malicious app, it's cool if it's only malicious for a week?

akilou ,

I had a extra stick of RAM available the other day so I went to open my wife's Lenovo to see if it'd take it and the damn thing is screwed shut with the smallest torx screws I've ever seen, smaller than what I have. I was so annoyed

akilou ,

I thought I did! Until I got the smallest one out and it just spun on top of the screw

akilou ,

Yeah, it's a Yoga

akilou ,

Why not use DDG?

akilou ,

I've used it every day for years and I haven't noticed a difference

akilou ,

The distinction here is not "suburb and non-suburb", it's "car-dependent suburb and non-car-dependent suburb" the large large majority are the former.

You don't have to be a farmer to have chickens. Get chickens

Has anyone calculated the administrative costs associated with traffic safety research? (crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov)

Just had the fleeting thought that maybe there is a substantial cost to review and create enormous traffic safety research systems and the subsequent training required of law enforcement personnel and administrative staff....

akilou ,

This is one of those things where the answer is "it depends". Like what counts as traffic safety research and what doesn't. I'm sure depending on how you choose the end result is wildly different.

akilou ,

I thought Classic Rock was a defined genre including Led Zeplin, The Who, The Doors, etc. Not just "popular rock from 30 years ago"

akilou ,

Right, well they couldn't have. Just like it wasn't called World War One until the second one happened. But after rock as a genre was founded, the classic version of it should always be just that. So are you saying that that A) Led Zeppelin is no longer classic rock or B) Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam are the same genre?

akilou ,

Yes, and how are we choosing to construct this one? That's the whole conversation

akilou ,

I use pocket casts and I tried switching to antenna pod because of a thread like this one and came right back to pocket casts. The deal breaker for me was no skip forward 30 seconds (e.g. ads) from the lock screen.

akilou ,

Total bullshit

Apple says that it determined an Apple Watch with Android support wasn’t doable because of technical limitations. As such, it scrapped the idea.

What technical limitations? Smart watches that work with Android exist.
