Yeah I get the whole “no model year” thing to a degree. It’s exactly the sort of shit you’d think of as disruptive if you were him. But there’s a reason the auto industry does it. It’s convenient to put in minor changes once a year and major changes every five or so. It keeps the car modern, new, and easy to figure out what parts you need. You just know the model year of your car because it’s regularly convenient to know

captainlezbian ,

He’s a modern Howard Hughes, and there’s a reason we know that name

captainlezbian ,

I fully agree, I just think the solution is cash. Use cash for normal payments. Buy a house with 20s even. Ok maybe not that, but for groceries or when you would use Venmo yeah do it

captainlezbian ,

I fully agree. I just also think crypto is terrible for that use case. If you’d be caught for using Venmo for drugs they can catch you using crypto. It might be harder, but that whole public immutable ledger means all they have to do is tie accounts to names. Which coincidentally you need to do to cash out or cash in.

captainlezbian ,

In America who knows. In Europe, it’s probably the law

captainlezbian ,

Honestly it’s still strange to me that the us dod doesn’t have their own in house operating system

captainlezbian ,

They’re all bad guys. That’s the point of the game. The Legion are the worst bad guys, and the NCR are probably the least bad, but they’re all bad

captainlezbian ,

I agree. And with the institute I find it particularly frustrating because of what they could be: scientists and engineers unconstrained by obligations or laws. They shouldn’t be the enclave, they should be defending themselves by talking about the calculation of the risks, and how they produced these good things as well. They should be mostly kept in check by internal conflicts and a lack of desire to rule. When they’re enclave level boogeymen they aren’t as interesting.

I felt like the game wasn’t trying to say that Caesar was justified. He kept the raiders at bay but was generally worse to live under

I hate gnome and it was part of what hurt my initial attempt at linux. I’m also very happy they’re doing it. Like you say, it’s good someone is trying new things. And maybe I would like it if I really gave it a try. But I also prefer my ability to customize over on KDE. Maybe I’ll try a gnome like setup at some point

    captainlezbian ,

How did a state with the Appalachian mountains, major cities, a major tributary of the Mississippi, and a Great Lake make your bland list. You want to see nothing? Go to Iowa. The Great Plains are a magnificent ecosystem with immense value, but gods is it a boring one to look at. You glimpse at it and are just like “yep, it’s grass and farmland”.

As a kid we drove from Dayton to Denver and yeah that chunk of Ohio is boring, as is that chunk of Indiana and Illinois, but once you pass the Mississippi holy fuck is there just nothing until mountains show up. It’s like being on the open ocean

    captainlezbian ,

I loved the little dis, but for real the Great Lakes Region is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, I’d put it on par with our mountain ranges. Indiana only has a sliver of it, but northern Indiana is beautiful unlike the hellhole that is Fort Wayne. It’s like if a bunch of people decided to move to Lima for some unknown reason.

    captainlezbian ,

As someone from the northern Mississippi basin y’all are crazy to live there. I’ll stick to my wet cool climates. I can handle the frigid weeks and the snow isn’t that bad

    captainlezbian ,

Keep them out of our post industrial hellhole!

But for real idk if these people can handle snow, so give it a few years before they move here

    captainlezbian ,

I feel that as an Ohioan. I’m here half out of spite and half out of inability to find a job in the northeast or Chicago.

It’s a hellhole here, but it’s my hellhole and we were supposed to be a purple state that matters none of this fashy bullshit. Fuckin hell these confederate flag waving motherfuckers better get the hell out of the home of John Brown and Ulysses Grant

    captainlezbian ,

Nah I chat with the other people in the car.

Listen I’m down to risk my life to save my wife, but I’m getting a gang together to do it. Going alone is suicide

    captainlezbian ,

Want to get bad drivers off the roads? Give them another way to get around.

    captainlezbian ,

They’re a regulatory body. If a Republican president really wanted to ban pasteurizing milk they could make the FDA do it

Killing net neutrality was a political whim that went against expert opinion, undoing it isn’t. Much in the same way that a liberal court would almost certainly reinstate roe

    captainlezbian ,

Ok how about YouTube which has those analyses. I’m not opposed to the TikTok ban, on these grounds. I just think it’s a half measure

    captainlezbian OP ,

Ok I’m going to sound like an idiot but this is my first doing of anything with any servers, so I apologize if I’m missing something obvious. What command should I use with it? I typed it in alone just in case and got an unknown command

    captainlezbian OP ,

No i followed the x86 instructions from the website, so I was using an Ubuntu (ok I deviated to kubuntu because I wanted a drive with it anyways) flash drive to run disks to put the os on the internal ssd from the link found here

    captainlezbian OP ,

    Thank you.

My desktop can access ghcr.io (assuming it’s supposed to return GitHub).

I don’t know how to ping from cli on haos. (It autofills the ha command)

I’m connecting over Ethernet using the same cable and connections that did work when kubuntu was on it

    captainlezbian OP ,

Yes, I was able to access it from my desktop while it still says the error (initial attempt was Sunday, also attempted Tuesday)

    captainlezbian OP ,

How do I get the CLI to let me ping without interpreting it as “ha ping” ?

    captainlezbian OP ,

    Yeah I do

    captainlezbian OP ,

In my router or on the machine? I’ve tried on the machine, but it didn’t work

    captainlezbian OP ,

Ok, is there a different haos I should download to put on my machine? Idk how to use docker and the machine is formatted aside from following the haos on x86 instructions from the website

    captainlezbian OP ,

Ok, it looks like I’m setting up Debian today and seeing if I can get a virtual machine in the background. I wanted this to be an easy way to dip my toes into self hosting…

    captainlezbian OP ,

Fucking hell I tried installing Debian and it didn’t even see the boot media…

Now to see if home assistant running in the background of my small kubuntu will work…

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

    captainlezbian ,

Yeah I use Garuda, but generally recommend kubuntu or mint for most people switching. Switching is so much less painful than I expected it to be

    captainlezbian ,

I did. I was naive and had just built a gaming pc. 10 was no longer for sale

    captainlezbian ,

Randall Monroe helped radicalize me as a teenager and I didn’t even realize it was radical. Like of course information wants to be free! And of course techno feminism makes sense. And of course dvorak is the superior keyboard layout.

Also his cancer comics were at one point the most stabilizing part of a particularly unstable part of my young life.

    captainlezbian ,

I believe it was formatted for a book

    captainlezbian ,

Idk the 00s? I get the arguments for colemak but Dvorak has a certain elegance to it that’s unsurpassed. I like my vowel row.

    captainlezbian ,

The hand alternating is actually supposed to be for ergonomics and typing rhythm. It’s one of the perks imo. But yeah that’s totally fair. And colemak has its advantages, I hear it’s easier to pick up, and someone like me would probably have benefited from it being less different from QWERTY as I lost my QWERTY abilities. But I too am not spending another 3 months learning a new layout

    captainlezbian ,

Yeah! It’s annoying the hell out of me as I’m troubleshooting what’s going wrong with my home assistant setup. Let me use my superior layout.

But yeah I think it really comes down to muscle memory. I know what action produces what letter and don’t even have to think to spell it all out. I just think words and can tap them out on my phone or keyboard without looking at the keys.

    captainlezbian ,

Yeah I switched in college when my wrists started hurting. My wrists are fine now despite typing a lot and doing other stuff that’s hard on them like bicycle repair. It solved the problem in months. And all it cost me was the ability to function in a QWERTY world. It does always get me nerd cred with IT departments though.

    captainlezbian ,

We are free from the 2010s regardless

Tesla’s in its flop era (www.theverge.com)

When Tesla releases its first quarter earnings this afternoon, the company’s CEO Elon Musk will field the usual questions about new products, new factories, and progress toward its futuristic vision of self-driving cars and robot workers. But Musk will also face increasingly urgent questions about its current state of affairs...

    captainlezbian ,

Yeah. Especially considering EVs were generally going to be more appealing to younger people as new technology that demonstrates care for the environment and future

    captainlezbian ,

It was also UAW made. Which is one of the most important things for me when it comes to buying a new vehicle

    captainlezbian ,

Very true. The unfortunate reality is no vehicle manufacturer is friendly to the UAW (to my knowledge, though Volkswagen claims to be apathetic, but when I was a union member of a company they own it certainly felt like they had a problem with us). I don’t support these companies because they’re good companies I support them because I want the industry to face financial pressure towards unionized labor. And my alternative isn’t nonunion vehicles, it’s used vehicles.

    captainlezbian ,

Ok how the hell did Ohio limit flamethrowers? We’re the Florida of the north

    captainlezbian ,

    Of course they are…

    captainlezbian ,

The thing is we on paper didn’t use incindiaries in Vietnam as anti personnel weapons, it was to torch the rainforest and deoxygenate tunnels. Now in practice we all know that flamethrowers were used on homes and have seen the pictures of the children with Napalm burns. But yeah this line of argument is nothing new.

    captainlezbian ,

Didn’t expect Cleveland felt more dayton with the whole lunatic idea with military applications thing
