Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

chronicledmonocle ,

It's one of the only non-Android TV, Apple TV, or Roku ways of streaming Netflix with a remote via HTPC. There are EXTREMELY niche uses for it.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

chronicledmonocle ,

If purchasing isn't ownership, piracy isn't stealing.

chronicledmonocle ,

They're in the UK. They don't have our stupid healthcare system.

chronicledmonocle ,

Clearly that's America smoke, which is far superior.

chronicledmonocle ,

As a Texan, not sure what part of Texas you think is so ugly. There is a lot of beauty here.

Our politicians just suck.

chronicledmonocle ,

I've traveled the country full time in an RV for two years. Yes, there are more beautiful places in the US (Sequoia, Redwood Forests, Olympic National Park, etc), but I'm just saying that Texas isn't all just some drab hole-in-the-wall. If you want that, go to Ohio or Indiana.

chronicledmonocle ,

I've seen basically all of the West half of the US and lived there. Yes, California is more beautiful. I'm just saying Texas isn't some horribly drab state all around. Big Bend, Davis Mountains, etc. are beautiful in their own right.

chronicledmonocle ,

Davis Mountains, Palo Duro, Enchanted Rock.......Texas is a huge ass state with a lot of different stuff to see.

Yosemite is my favorite National Park in the country, but Big Bend is a close second.

chronicledmonocle ,

You haven't seen Texas, then. Texas has Big Bend, which is my second favorite National Park in the whole country. And I've been to over 100 National Parks, Preserves, and Monuments.

Yosemite is still more beautiful, though.

Host your own Wireguard endpoint on any cloud provider. They give you elastic IPs that you can create 1:1 NATs for your hosts. Maybe not quite as clean, but effectively the same thing.

If the company is able to scale this technology large enough for consumer vehicles while keeping prices down, it could easily double the range of the farthest-driving EVs on the road today.

That's a big IF.
TL;DR: They haven't developed a means of making this scalable and able to be mass manufactured. Until they do, this is another "revolutionary" battery tech that may or may not actually be used due to cost of production. Most likely in the "not" category.

If you want to make EVs more popular, make them with Sodium-Ion batteries that are cheaper than ICE vehicles. They'll sell better as a result.

Hardly anybody needs an EV with more than 200 miles of range if they're plugging in each night. Most people's commute is round-trip sub-50 miles. "Range anxiety" is 95%+ of the time a "problem" that stupid people have for their theoretical future that never actually happens. Most people are impractical idiots.

chronicledmonocle ,

Or you could just get a Plug-in Hybrid, if that's a concern.

chronicledmonocle ,

Most people have the option of plugging in where they live and/or work. The only argument would be for apartment complexes. Townhouses, single family homes, etc. are easy to switch to electric.

chronicledmonocle ,

Yeah I get that. That's where Plug-in hybrids are a good fit.

chronicledmonocle ,

Cool. I switched to Linux and no longer care about Microsoft's BS. This continues to just reinforce that I made the correct decision.

chronicledmonocle ,

My kids have never used a Windows computer. Android and Linux are all they know.

chronicledmonocle ,

I made the switch between Windows 8.1 and 10, but I appreciate the welcome anyway 😂

chronicledmonocle ,

Until they take away the checkbox.

chronicledmonocle ,

This is a comments section. And I commented. Sorry you don't like it, but you're welcome to scroll on by.

I hope whatever OS you use works well for you. Even if it's Windows.

chronicledmonocle ,

This is like reading my uneducated Republican mother's ramblings on Facebook. Completely incoherent and gave me a brain aneurysm.

chronicledmonocle ,

The SATA controller on the motherboard. The thing you plug your SATA cable into.

chronicledmonocle ,

Same reason people get their WiFi from their ISP Modem+Router combo, even though it's stupid to do so: People often confuse initial convenience for good.

chronicledmonocle ,

They also are forcing US users into arbitration unless you opt out by May 15th by emailing arbitration-opt-out@discord.com, so you can't sue them. This is similar to LG with their compressor fiasco in their fridges where they put arbitration agreement crap on the box.

chronicledmonocle ,

If you want a smart home/devices, only opt for locally controlled, non-cloud, open source, and self hosted options. Home Assistant is great for home automation.

My mini splits used to be controlled by an Alexa dongle with no other choice from the manufacturer. After some research, I discovered that there was an ESPHome module for controlling them with about $8 worth of stuff. It's more responsive, reliable, will never stop working because some company decided it's no longer worth their time, and has more elaborate controls than anything the manufacturer provided. And I can control three mini splits for half of the cost of one "cloud dongle" from the manufacturer.

The best way to combat enshittification is voting with your wallet. Support projects by people who produce open source solutions. Donate the money you would have spent on the "turnkey cloud" option to help fund the open source project through donations. Until we stop giving these companies money, they're not going to stop screwing us.

chronicledmonocle ,

Are they called something else in other places? Heat Pump Mini Splits are pretty common in the Americas and Europe.

chronicledmonocle ,

Unfortunately, you're very right. I try to do my part in convincing people to choose otherwise, though.

chronicledmonocle ,

Yeah it's rather unfortunate that heat pumps aren't more common in the Midwest. As someone formerly from Michigan, I know it gets cold, but heat pumps can operate below 0 easily without aux heat nowadays and you can get gas or electric aux heat to supplement when you get below the operating temps of the heat pump.

Change is also hard for humans, so companies still throw in forced air systems that burn natural gas or propane.

chronicledmonocle ,

Do you have a Raspberry Pi, Mini PC, or media center PC that you already have running? Home Assistant sells a ready-made Home Assistant box (Home Assistant Green) if you don't. It has HASS pre-installed ready to go.

chronicledmonocle ,

Hell Cinnamon DE is literally an install option on Debian. LOL.

chronicledmonocle ,

The true Linux users are the ones that realize that all Linux is the same. The only differences is package management, Desktop Environment, and customization by the Distro creator.

You can literally just install Debian stable with Cinnamon DE and get basically Linux Mint on Debian. Bonus points for adding backports so you get a slightly more updated kernel.

I know this is a joke, but you should use whatever distro you want to use....because at the end of the day it's all Linux.

chronicledmonocle ,

I just put Windows in a VM, if I bother at all.

chronicledmonocle ,

Just deleted my account. I hardly used it anyway, so good job pushing me off the edge Glassdoor.

chronicledmonocle ,

I recently trashed my HP and bought a really old Dell LaserJet from government auction. $25 and it came with a 60% full toner. Been using it for 2 months and still have 54% toner left.

I'll probably never replace this thing and keep fixing it until I can't find parts anymore.

chronicledmonocle ,

Framework has their 11th gen Intel laptops right now as a barebones for $499 USD from B-stock, new components, if that interests you.

Otherwise, Chromebooks that you can flash replacement coreboot are another good option.

chronicledmonocle ,

It includes everything except RAM, Storage, and the USB C modular ports. With all of that you're probably looking more like $575-600. They do, however, have 8GB of RAM for $15, cheap storage options, etc, so it's a pretty good deal overall for such a repairable and upgradable laptop.

chronicledmonocle ,

Important to remember that not all Chromebooks are created equal. There are some that have i5/i7s or Ryzen CPUs in them that will rival most laptops. I see $200-500 USD Chromebooks all the time with decent specs refurbed or clearance.

chronicledmonocle ,

No there is dedicated LTE and 5G bans for First Responders. Normal users can use it, but when First Responders connect to it they deprioritze everyone else on the band.

chronicledmonocle ,

ATT doesn't have a 2G network anymore. They phased it out in 2017.

chronicledmonocle ,

No problem, home slice.

chronicledmonocle ,

I mean.... Did you not do laundry growing up? I've washed my mother's bras doing chores, so while I don't have the size exact or committed to memory, I can at least say "C or above" like the question asks. Lol.
