Asus used to be the Toyota of computing.

Nowadays I would recommend MSI or Lenovo.

Warranty is not the only problem. I ordered a Vivobook for a client. Upon arrival, I opened it up to see if there was space for a rusty disk. No space. Opening that thing was scary. I had the impression that it was going to break any minute. The thing is so flimsy it's scary. I feels like it's made out of a plastic pizza container and aluminum foil.

Thankfully we are in Europe, warranties here have teeth, and are 2 years minimum by law.

A Sharp?

elucubra ,

I never gave any thought to this. Why is base 12 better?

elucubra ,

The 10s are being held hostage by the 12.5/48.78 wrenches

elucubra ,

Plumbing is still described in customary in Europe. You have 1/2 or 3/4 fittings etc.

elucubra ,

Well, Germans are pretty anal about standards (thankfully) and they do them right, so why not copy them?

elucubra ,

Spain has Bizum, which I imagine is similar to Tikkie, where you go into your banking app, and instantly send money to a phone number, usually from your contact list, that is also in the bizum system, zero fees.

elucubra ,

I owned a business in Europe. My bank charged me a pretty low monthly flat fee for card charges, so I would take cards for any amount.

elucubra ,

Oh, that's simple and useful.

elucubra ,

Not only that, if you know your A4, you can do all paper sizes in you head: A3 has A4's long side as it's short side, and A4's short side x2 for it's long side. Rinse and repeat.

elucubra ,

They jam less

elucubra ,

And always fractional, so, to convert from Farenheit to Celsius (inferior to kelvin, though), you take farenheit, add 57 mice, and divide by a hamburger.

elucubra ,

Also, if you fold a sheet in half, both sets of two match, so if you cut 4 hole punched A4's in half, they'll fit in two hole binders.

elucubra ,

You forgot the /s

My first job was in a Big Iron shop in the late 80's, where I was in charge of backups. We kept Three sets of backups, on two different media, one on hand, one in a different location in the main building, in a water and fireproof safe, and one offsite. We had a major failure one day, and had to do a restore.

Both inhouse copies failed to restore. Thankfully the offsite copy worked. We were in panic. That taught me to keep all my important data on three sets.
As the old saying goes: Data loss is not an if question, but a when question. Also, remember that "the cloud" simply means someone else's remote servers over which you have no control.

elucubra ,

In a big iron shop?everything gets tested, dry run, etc, but shit happens, hence backups

These things (and Seagate's) have the usb interface soldered on, so if the drivd dies, forget about the data, no way to connect to another usb adapter to try to recover. Granted, it's usually the drive that dies, but in these cases, you have a 100% rate of non recovery . Any other brand's are standard drives. My favorite are toshiba.

elucubra ,

In my experience the drive fails more often than the adapter, but they do fail. Also, there is a good chance to recover data from a failed drive. With a soldered adaptor it's basically impossible.
The worst part is that the externals are often used for backups.

elucubra ,

Soldering is not the problem, unless its smd or tiny, its getting a non standard usb interface.

elucubra ,

Not particularly, but it happens.

elucubra ,

Thanks! Did the trick!

Generally you can upgrade RAM of different capacities, but only the amount of RAM that matches the original will run in dual channel. I've done it in a couple of machines, and it worked fine. the extra RAM should take a small performance hit, but In my case the tradeoff was worth it. I've also upgraded RAM beyond the specified max. Hasn't always worked.

In the US the most trustworthy media sources right now are Jon Stewart and John Oliver

elucubra ,

People assume that Boeing is behind this. I'm more inclined to believe that it's a major shareholder

elucubra ,

I use Affinity photo. Great program, and has a very affordable pay once model, no subscription crap.

elucubra ,

Who would pay for stuff? Ads are not inherently bad, it's misuse is. I wouldn't mind a website with one or two ads per page. I hate these sites with an ad after each paragraph. I use Firefox with Ublock origin, Privacy badger and use Next DNS in my router because of Ad excesses. Ultimately the greed of website publishers is their own demise.

elucubra ,

Fantasy ounces, I think it's used in D&D. What's an ounce, though? Beats me.

elucubra ,

I guess it translates to one of those units used in the US and UK, that you divide by twentyeleven, then multiply by two large fries, and you get the result in football (which is actually hand-egg ball) fields.

Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there's been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

Plenty of big box stores here carry computers. There are also also electronics megastores like Mediamarkt, Saturn, and others.

elucubra ,

Also, a larger capacity one is better, and it's likely you'll find a secondhand one with more capacity/features for a similar price.
