Bazzite has been designed to be an out of the box SteamOS distro. It's not based on Arch, so if that's what you're familiar with then that's not the same, but give it a try.

Ive been using Firefox on Android for years but it really needs some TLC. It doesn't support scaling to a tablet/desktop UI at all so it doesn't work well in DeX or anything larger than a phone. I also recently had to swap to Brave because I noticed Firefox was draining a lot of battery all of a sudden. There's some kind of leak or running process that isn't sleeping properly. In a few months I'll re-install and try again.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

I'd never once considered a phone being faster. I always see typing on my phone as a pain, an I'm no great touch typist by an means (around 80wpm).

How fast do you type on a standard keyboard, for comparison? I'm curious if you like the phone better because you're not very fast with a regular keyboard, or if I'm just bad with my phone.

What?! That's ridiculous. Hotswap ports are great for high throughput devices requiring PCIe lanes, but taking the audio port out gains you literally nothing. There should be some standard ports + hotswappable ports.

I also wish they could find a way to redesign the Ethernet port with a hinged jaw or something so it isn't so massive, I wouldn't want to leave that plugged in.

Starship is a terrible idea and vehicle. The fact they keep trying to make the thing work is just because Musk is burning government funds. It has no chance of making it to the moon, let alone mars.

foggenbooty ,

Anything can make progress if it's within the realm of possibility and you throw enough resources at it.

My issue with Starship is that it's not really good for any of the things Musk has promised it for. It's a heavy lift rocket that has not yet proven capable of surviving flight. Best case it can be used to get materials up to space, but used as a lander or a long distance ship? No way. It's just not designed that way. Too heavy, too unsafe, too inefficient, too complicated.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

foggenbooty ,

There are plenty of things I might not like that aren't illegal.

I'm interested in thr thought experiment this has brought up, but I don't want us to get caught in a reactionary fervor because of AI.

AI will make this easier to do, but people have been clipping magazines and celebrities have had photoshops fakes created since both mediums existed. This isn't new, but it is being commoditized.

My take is that these pictures shouldn't be illegal to own or create, but they should be illegal to profit off of and distribute, meaning these tools specifically designed and marketed for it would be banned. If someone wants to tinker at home with their computer, yoipl never be able to ban that, and you'll never be able to ban sexual fantasy.

foggenbooty ,

I think you might be overreacting, and if you're not, then it says much more about the society we are currently living in than this particular problem.

I'm not promoting AI fakes, just to be clear. That said, AI is just making fakes easier. If you were a teacher (for example) and you're so concerned that a student of yours could create this image that would cause you to pick up and move your life, I'm sad to say they can already do this and they've been able to for the last 10 years.

I'm not saying it's good that a fake, or an unsubstantiated rumor of an affair, etc can have such big impacts on our life, but it is troubling that someone like yourself can fear for their livelihood over something so easy for anyone to produce. Are we so fragile? Should we not worry more about why our society is so prudish and ostracizing to basic human sexuality?

foggenbooty ,

While this is true to an extent, the human mind is not evolving at the pace of technology. Eventually (not sure when) humans will become unemployable for the majority of jobs and the few that are left will not be enough to go around.

We need to start taking UBI ideas seriously now, so in a few decades they are palatable, because we are heading for a labour collapse.

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works (gizmodo.com)

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

foggenbooty ,

It's an interesting thought experiment, but we don't actually see what really exists, our brains essentially are AI vision, filling in things we don't actually perceive. Examples are movement while we're blinking, objects and colors in our peripheral vision, the state of objects when our eyes dart around, etc.

The difference is we can't go back frame by frame and analyze these "hallucinations" since they're not recorded. I think AI enhanced video will actually bring us closer to what humans see even if some of the data doesn't "exist", but the article is correct that it should never be used as evidence.

I hope this is a joke. There's no way a campus like this is going to deploy Ubiquiti.

I haven't tried my VR on Linux because the general consensus of people who have say it's bad. It's impressive how far Linux has come in terms of gaming in such a short time. Proton is incredible.

That being said, niche things like VR, or running multiple monitors with different high refresh rates and freesync simultaneously are still rocky.

The biggest issue in see however is multiplayer competitive gaming. There's no easy path to that in sight due to aggressive anti-cheat software.

As such Linux is currently relegated to mostly single player games that don't do anything crazy. That's honestly good enough for a lot of people, but misses the mark with a lot of gamers.

I also left Firefox for Chrome many years ago during that time period, but Firefox has been good again for quite some time. They did a big refresh called Quantum several years back and solved most of those issues. Give it a try.

How would you change his setup to prevent ARP attacks? More network segmentation (clients and servers on separate VLANs) or does OPNsense additional protections I should look into?
