I thought the restriction was CHARGING to replace a light switch as an unlicensed electrician, am I wrong? I've never heard of DIY being disallowed. The only restrictions I know of are needing to pull a permit for structural stuff and I'm in an area with pretty tight electrical regulations (EMT conduit, no Romex allowed)

glimse ,

Amcrest gets recommended a lot but I have no personal experience with them

glimse ,

I thought the doorbell camera worked great with frigate, is that not the case? I don't have a need for cameras yet but that was on my shopping list...all cameras will be on a locked down vlan so it's fine if it TRIES to phone home if it still works "offline"

glimse ,

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep them on my list. I wasn't considering the PTZ cameras just the inexpensive turrets and plan on running them PoE so it looks like those issues won't affect me!

glimse ,

I thought Reolink cameras were just rebranded Amcrest...or is it just the chips and lenses?

I will be using them with Frigate so I'm not too worried about the janky software unless it affects how Frigate operates

glimse ,

Are you running them with Frigate? I was thinking the lack of substream wouldn't be a problem because the frigate server could downscale if needed (but I haven't really looked into it yet)

glimse ,

Ahh gotcha, didn't consider that! I'll have to make sure my processor is up for the task. I think it will be...I'm doing 4 cameras + doorbell max and buying a NUC

glimse ,

I was planning on an Intel CPU that was recommended when I was putting my list together which I was told could handle detection up on to 8 cameras without issue (so I could skip the Coral all together)

glimse ,

Sure, I just figured if it worked well with 8 it would work well with 4 + 1 unoptimized stream. If it doesn't work, I can just spend $40 on a coral

glimse ,

Whoever paid you to spam this shit got scammed so hard lol

Did you really think that would work on the fediverse?

glimse ,

Chocolate chip vs chocolate chocolate chip

Twice as many things have chocolate in it (the chips vs the chips and dough)

glimse ,

I get how it would be frustrating for people who are reading it literally for the first time but I don't think it was worded like that to be deceptive. Baked goods don't have the most accurate names (Red Velvet comes to mind) and Chocolate Chocolate Chip/Double Chocolate Chip is a pretty common cookie

glimse ,

Criticizing Biden is totally fine. It's the pressure from these posters to not vote for Biden out of principle that's the problem.

Biden is flubbing the Gaza situation hard but he's still (unfortunately) our only chance to keep Trump out of office.

This post should really say "Just because we dislike Biden doesn't mean we shouldn't vote for him"

glimse ,

How the hell did you come to that idiotic conclusion?

glimse ,

"I don't like Biden's support for Israel's genocide so I'm going to make it more likely that the guy who would support Israel's genocide even more gets into office."

Incredibly dumb take.

"The time to make a change is election year and once it's over I'll go back to being politically inactive"

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

glimse ,

I'm glad this report showed their innocence but I unsubscribed after the GN/Billet Labs thing.

I might check them out again later but that situation made me kind of uncomfortable with supporting them

glimse ,

I saw that which is why I'm willing to give them another chance. I really don't think Linus is a scummy guy or anything, they just grew too fast without thinking.

I haven't had a strong desire to get back into the channel but if a video pops up on my feed again, I might resub.

glimse ,

I agree but it did shake my confidence enough to make me back off. I watched LTT mostly for entertainment (GN for news and reviews) and I've since "filled that spot" so it'll probably only make its way back into my watch list once a different thing falls off.

Strawman

glimse ,

The person you're demonizing is a minority opinion...especially on Lemmy.

Linkerbaan, I recognize your username and can say we are very closely aligned, but you're misrepresenting why the majority of people here are sick of people demonizing Biden. He is not well-liked even by left-leaning users but shitting on him all the time only makes it more likely that Trump will win.

Unfortunately we only have the choice between bad and extremely bad this cycle and now is not the time to tank our chances to make the next election better. The lesser of the two evils is still evil but actively campaigning AGAINST the lesser evil is nearly the same thing as campaigning FOR the greater evil.

glimse ,

"Genocide Joe" is literally the only viable option this election but that doesn't mean he's a GOOD option. The other options are RFK and Trump, both significantly worse in basically every regard.

Anyone pandering for Biden on Lemmy turns out to be a war crime apologist shilling against Snowden and Assange etc.

That's just not true, man. I have no idea how you can think that.

glimse ,

I wholly agree with your overall point but that's not why this exists. The ruling class is not so benevolent to give people jobs just to make sure they're fed - they don't care. This technology exists because it's good for the shareholders. Data - and control of said data - is valuable and their bosses want it. It's all about profits and consolidated power - this job would not exist if not for its benefit to the ruling class.

"Bullshit work" is stuff like paper pushing and those are the jobs that are disappearing with automation.

But surely you're aware how played out that joke is?

    glimse ,

Twitter was great and I think anyone who thinks otherwise either curated it to be awful or didn't really use it at all. Your Twitter experience was defined by who you followed. There was sports Twitter, political Twitter, science Twitter, weird Twitter...there were thousands of different spheres to put yourself in.

If you followed political accounts...yeah you set yourself up for a toxic experience. But I followed funny people so my experience was great. A seemingly endless series of one liners, comics, and weird observations.

    glimse ,

Twitter was no worse in that regard than any social media site until the 2016 election.

    glimse ,

It got worse but it didn't become a truly toxic cesspool until Elmo bought it.

It's not like the majority of the site was toxic, either. It was THE site for science, comedy, music, and a bunch of other interests until recently. It's like picking a couple shitty instances/communities we have here and declaring the entirety of the fediverse a toxic cesspool.

    glimse ,

HMMMM DO I WANT THE GUY THAT ISN'T GOING TO STOP OUR SLIDE TO FASCISM or the guy who is going to accelerate it??

It's such a tough choice! I don't know what to do! Maybe I should just not vote so the second guy has a better chance???

    glimse ,

It's easy. Do what the other commenter said and break them before opening. They suggest in half, I prefer in thirds. Then after you eat the solid pieces you dump the crumbs into your mouth. If they made them less crumbly, I don't think they'd be as good.

    glimse ,

I'm all for reduxcing packaging but...ewww I'm not eating these from an unsealed box. Bugs love the crumbs....I can imagine they'd love the full bars, too. Not to mention rodents.

The box would have to be fully resealable, too, or they'd be gross so they'd need to replace the cardboard with plastic

    glimse ,

Too risky. I'd rather have bite size pieces than try to catch the crumbs in the tiny wrapper

    glimse ,

To make them not turn to dust in transit, they'd need to be in a hard shell sleeve wrapped in plastic like Oreos...and they'd still likely get crushed a bit.

I'm not a packaging engineer but that seems like more plastic with little added benefit

    glimse ,

OP planned on using the device. They would not be complaining if it was crappy but usable...it was manufactured in a way that makes me unusable for 90% of people but marketed to 100% of them

    glimse ,

I get what you're saying but I feel like you're deliberately missing their point just to shame them..

The supply and manufacturing chain is fucked up for just about everything. OP is realizing that not only is it fucked up, all that effort in the mines and sweatshop endes up in a landfill without any sort of usable product or silver lining.

    glimse ,

I don't think you're implying this is exclusively an American issue or anything but that's just the nature of construction unless you're paying top dollar for accuracy when it matters.

I've been on a hundred or more construction sites and I'd confidently wager that most houses don't match the plans perfectly because of unforseen reasons...equipment changing due to lead times, electricians running their conduit in the wrong stud bays, etc. I've had to do a lot of creative problem solving and design modifications are inevitable. That's the only thing I really miss from my old career

    glimse ,

Dimensional lumber has negligible variance in width/depth most of the time which is why it's called that. It's really the length that's a crapshoot. Gotta love when you buy a bunch of 10' planks and a couple are a few inches short

    glimse ,

I loved every song featuring Remi Wolf but just could not get into her music....then like a year later it clicked and now I fuckin love Remi Wolf. I think I was too focused on the specific things I liked about her in the features and and missed out on what else she had to offer

    glimse ,

That's me, I love full albums.

    glimse ,

Dude that's the EXACT set that did it for me lol

I had listened to her studio stuff and it just wasn't hitting...but after hearing the live set, I went back and loved it all. I'm kicking myself for not seeing her live

    glimse ,

    Ok I will today

    glimse ,

Off to a strong start here. Are the horns sampled, a VST, or are you playing? My biggest struggle with music is getting instruments I can't play (horns, as an example) to sound how I'm hearing them in my head

I'm not drawing a comparison to the music itself but it reminds me of what I like about 3 artists in particular: A Cloud For Climbing, Broke For Free, and Mesita. They, and you, layer a lot of sounds in a way that pleases me.

    glimse ,

I liked Leveling Up and now I'm listening to your newest release

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

    glimse ,

Settings > Text Correction, uncheck third option down "Block Offensive Words"

Fuck fuck fuck cunt bitch asshole (all swipe texted, only the first "fuck" became "duck")

    glimse ,

    It's never let me down

    glimse ,

There's an old tweet that explains it well, I'm sure you've seen it.

(Paraphrased) "Elon Musk talked about cars. I don't know anything about cars so when people said he was a genius, I figured he must be a genius"

Investors don't know shit about the stuff they're investing in and Musk sounds really smart when you don't know anything about the thing he's speaking on.

    glimse ,

I wanted to figure out what game hosting sites were good and Google pointed me to reddit...every thread was full of boilerplate ads for different sites. The comments were the most obvious, marketing-approved sentences I've ever seen

    glimse ,

If you're terrified of honest conversations, your product is probably shit.

Marques Brownlee had a video recently about the question "do bad reviews kill products?" that highlights the issue well
