Damn that stings, but honestly your "failure" is more than I've accomplished even in my successes. Like I just wanted to make a roguelike game, but managed to make a bad roguelike engine that no one uses, not even myself. And I'm still calling that a win.

I know you weren't trying to solicit advice, but have you thought of getting other people involved in running the radio station? Then you can participate when you have the energy, and take a step back when you don't?

Also I have plenty of podcasts, essayists, and newsletter writers that I like, who have a very inconsistent cadence, and it's fine. It's a happy surprise when I see they're back online.

Just start. I made another email a few years ago and just started using it for new accounts, moving others over when I thought of it...

Slowly but surely my Gmail has become a ghost town that receives mostly just spam, and the odd password reset link for accounts I haven't bothered updating.

Sure it's not a 100% but it's a lot, and it's a little bit less of myself getting to google

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

You can also forward emails from your old Gmail to your new email as a bridge to ensure you don't miss anything.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Damn now I want to make a third, super-secret email address that I re-forward to. Darn that blasted nosey goog

There's also the question of ought we be pursuing a satisfying and fulfilling life, above other objectives?

I mean I am, but I don't think that's the only way to be

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I'd say "changed" or "interpreted" over "warped," but yeah those words in particular are poor containers.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

is that someone is going to create a defederated stackoverflow alternative?

God I would love that. But as simple as the UI is, it would be some real work.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

What do you think the hardest challenge would be?

I honestly wouldn't know where to begin. Hardest to start would be learning enough of the problem space to identify p problems, but that's just what's in front of me

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

You're a cat.

I'm a cat.

We're different cats.

We are not the same, cat.

On that note, both my parents were physically abused as kids, but never laid a hand on me or my siblings. Like most parents, they weren't great at parenting, but I am thankful I never had to be really afraid of my parents.

Great use of the trolley problem. Given the number of people in thought experiment, it's more likely that we'd be tied to the tracks than not

Good comic.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I just remembered what this reminded me. This ethical test for a situation or system, that I was taught as the Veil of Ignorance: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_position

Or in this case, would you still design a trolley system that runs people over if you didn't know which person you'd end up as?

Hey the whale's just doing what it's always done, it's these agitators who are raising their voices, behaving like animals

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Tea gang, what what.

But I think it's pretty much the same thing. I've overdrive tea and woken up in the middle of the night plenty of times.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

That's brain defrag time, buddy! Helps you think straight

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Am I the only one who doesn't want to go on vacation? I'll take the time off work, but I'd rather potter around my place, maybe go for some nice walks

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

That's me! But I'm a really slow reader, and have many other interests, so that number would be between 0-1 every time lol.

[•••] and I was thinking to myself that her way is certainly much less expensive

Maybe so, but if you like going elsewhere then maybe it's worth it for you. The main reason I don't travel is because it sounds like the opposite of fun to me, personally.

But I spend plenty on my introvert shit. Like just recently spent almost 100 EUR on these fancy recycled notebooks for my partner and I, because I spend so much of my time writing workbooks, navel gazing diary entries, filling out bespoke agendas rofl; all that stuff.

But that's me and my happy place.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Pedantry: it putter not potter.

I thought the same, but they're actually interchangeable depending on where you are, so I interchange them for fun.

I think it's a consequence of the late stage capitalist world. We're way too burned out to have the energy to go on adventures or the money to make it easy to do.

Perhaps at the level of statistics, but I have the opportunity to travel (now, for the first time in my life), but no desire. There's just so much to do locally, you know?

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I love near a metropolitan city, so I feel like the world kind of comes to me. And each passing year my small town becomes more and more diverse, along with my work and friend groups.

Obviously not the same as going somewhere with different history and culture, but I feel like my cup is full. Like, I'm good for pleasures. 👍🏻

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah the itinerary thing sounds so awful, especially if it involves traveling from place to place to place. But I guess some people really like it that way...

I like to exist in place for my vacations, but my partner is one of those who need to go elsewhere every now and then. I look forward to her stories, but am thankful I don't have to share in them haha

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

That's what I always thought. Or thought it was just what we called stat days since I never got vacation until I got into software. Now that I'm around people in a higher income bracket I discovered we get more than 2 or 3 days off?? And folks are going places like far away, for long periods of time.

I still have not adjusted from this middle class culture shock

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

What can't be true?

I do realise there are experiences I'm missing out on. I miss out on plenty of experiences other than traveling, though.

It would be neat to go somewhere I'm a visible minority, though. I don't get a lot of that life, except maybe at weddings, big cultural events, etc.

Anyway my wife is a traveller. She gets that wanderlust from time to time, so it's only inevitable that she take me on one her trips one of these days.

The airport sounds like the worst part tbh so much indignity

Comes up in politics or ethics discussions a lot. Or at least it used to when I was in school. Things like gay rights, women's rights, right to die, etc etc

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Made sense to me, even knowing the original meaning of the phrase. Good splainer though

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

we need to pick the side that will do the least harm. There is no way to be neutral with FPTP voting.

I don't think you need to actually "pick a side," in the sense like they're the team you support and root for. Vote for the best candidate available to you, yes; but don't stop complaining about the paltriness of your choice. Don't stop agitating for an end to an ongoing genocide that is being supported by your best-of-two-bad-choices rep.

Awards are just bespoke emoji. You can still react to a comment with a picture or emoji if you want.

IMO your comment, actually expressing explicit and specific approval, is worth more than, like... a picture of a little whale with money coming out of its blowhole, or whatever.

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Nice

I think it's cute, but haven't heard a single good thing about it. I also thought the "cyber truck" was beautiful so obviously I have some wires crossed compared to most folks

Bittersweet memories... I'll always associate this game with being down and out.

There was a jobs centre where I would go to search for jobs, print resumes, apply online, etc. Anyway, this was one of the games I played while in between interviews, or waiting for the men's shelter to open.

This game along with Ricochet HD got me through the wringer without needing drugs or alcohol as a pillow, so I'm thankful they were there when I needed them.

Anyway that's my needlessly wrought story of how lofi windows games saved me lol

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Conservatives and liberal chuds also use it because they see us saying it, not realising that it's a call-out of viscous authoritarianism, and not necessarily a critique of communism let alone socialism.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

I think it works as intended now, but it's just that the intended audience has changed. We all work for advertisers now.

At least if you follow the mainstream web experience. Luckily there are still nice places like this! :)

I've been using kagi for a couple months and it's great. The AI shit is pretty prominent, but optional, so your experience will vary depending on your tolerance for that stuff. Also it's not free lol.

For my purposes I find it worth the money

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Is the board paid? I thought it was a volunteer position, where you meet based on a certain cadence and vote on enterprise matters.

I'm also quite wary of corp/venture/capitalist influence on masto/fedi/décentralisation.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

So the employees who are employed by donations, or all contributors? Not trying to throw a wrench in your suggestion, just wondering what this would look like for masto

Israel using Meta's WhatsApp to kill Palestinians in Gaza through AI system (www.middleeastmonitor.com)

According to software engineer and blogger, Paul Biggar, however, one key detail on the methods employed by the Lavender system that is often overlooked is the involvement of the messaging platform, WhatsApp. A major determining factor of the system’s identification is simply if an individual is in a WhatsApp group containing...

Same. That's the biggest thing I'm seeing from orgs all over: using AI as a kind of "appeal to authority" to justify shitty behavior that they've been wanting to do all along. If they didn't want to act like this then they would double-check, adjust, or correct the results.

The AI gives them a headless authority to point to, saying in a way, that they were just following orders
