also be sure to disable cookies on youtube, it gets rid of weird suggestions and usually only suggests videos related to the current one

Safest way of using WeChat on Android?

I live in Canada. My girlfriend is Chinese (also living in Canada), and while we are able to communicate via SMS, her mobile carrier isn't the best, and so there have often been issues for us with regular texting. She expressed a strong preference to use WeChat, at least as a backup option for when texting fails us. While I...

hexagonwin ,

Not OP, but is this any better than the Island app? I've been using that for a long time and it seems to use the same android feature.

hexagonwin ,

gotta use a superior os https://devuan.org

hexagonwin ,

bruh, idk why i'm getting downvoted to hell but it's the exact opposite of a pointless unmaintained buggy fork lol.

yeah it's superior since systemd is inferior if you don't exactly need it

hexagonwin ,

i don't think you'll be able to run a proper linux distro with mainline kernel on it, better get an sbc like orange/rock/raspberry pi/odroid.

hexagonwin ,

This is news to me.. not sure why I missed it..

I can't find mention of Cory on that article though, maybe I misinterpreted, do you know where that is?

hexagonwin OP ,

One of the members and I used to chat on Matrix some time ago. I didn't encounter much issues but he had an awful experience (android/Windows, encryption related things and minor glitches on the client such as when syncing) that he refuses to move to Matrix unfortunately...

hexagonwin OP ,

Thanks. Have you tried configuring infinite time for retention/attachments/history? I can't find a way to disable those limits completely.
Conversations on Android and Pidgin on Linux/Windows look pretty good, I've yet to find a good OSX one though.
I'll try checking out Snikket, thanks.

hexagonwin OP ,

It's just a room for chatting among friends so not really, but I'll check this out as well, thanks.

hexagonwin OP ,

Looks great. Though we'd prefer selfhosting as of now. Thanks for the info.

hexagonwin OP ,

You're right that XMPP is federated as well and Matrix can be non-federated but I've heard some people had trouble with the Synapse server chugging resources despite not using federation.

hexagonwin OP ,

Thanks, but it's not ideal for our usage, it's not selfhosted and there aren't many clients available. Plus it doesn't have unlimited message and attachments history.

hexagonwin OP ,

I've tried installing and using revolt. It's okay and our members like it but the lack of support and a usable control panel makes it hard to choose.

hexagonwin OP ,

Thanks, actually WeAreAllOne@lemm.ee mentioned it earlier lol. I'm planning to try this as I get a linux box running.

hexagonwin OP ,

As I mentioned in the OP I tried Prosody on my FreeBSD server, I've yet to get attachments working.

hexagonwin OP ,

Looks interesting, but isn't this slow though?

Our chatroom is very active and the members won't move if it's much slower compared to Discord unfortunately..

hexagonwin OP ,

Thanks. I'll try Ejabberd as well :)

hexagonwin OP ,

You're right that it's not ideal, but somehow people like it... :/

Thanks anyway, I'll try if that works.

hexagonwin OP ,

Yeah it seems to have bunch of plugins but it's not working well for some reason.. :(

hexagonwin ,

maybe they don't enable js at all /s

jk, maybe they value fingerprinting over that? even tor browser doesn't have one built in.

hexagonwin ,

instaloader can scrape instagram accounts. do note that they'll ban your account if you use it in a 'suspicious' way, i.e. downloading multiple times or simultaneously.

you can setup a cron job on your *nix machine and setup a script to notify for new files (posts).

Office 365 asking for permissions to change browser settings (lemmy.world)

I have to use certain Microsoft apps for work, so I strictly only use the web versions as I am on Linux. However, just seen this setting pop up in Word while working on a document. I wonder what in specific they would change, considering i am on Firefox. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there an actual good reason for me...

hexagonwin ,

I ususally just get rid of those popups using custom uBO filters.

vmyz5wg7yt , to Selfhosted
hexagonwin ,

what is this?

hexagonwin ,

I use uMatrix for this purpose.. it hasn't been updated for long though.

hexagonwin ,

i just have top running through ssh on an xterm window.

hexagonwin ,

Users can just use W10 LTSC IOT until 2032 and switch to Linux or ReactOS by then lol..
This thing just isn't worth using

hexagonwin ,

Not sure which ports are required for your usage but maybe cloudflared would work?
It works on the free tier as well, you can install cloudflared on your linux/windows server (no BSD support afaik).

Freenom's domains are pretty unstable, they lost management for .ga domains last year and they often claim others' free domain when they have high usage.

though if you have unstable network I won't suggest self hosting fediverse stuff.
