Every capitalist industry on the Earth can't shake its human rights abuse problem.

Lots of organizations use "Open" because it has positive connotations in people's minds. They aren't trying to suggest that they specifically follow the FOSS philosophy.

And people's jobs (not because it can replace people, but because execs think it can)

At the time this comic came out, it would have been Democrats, not Republicans, who were viewed as the party of conservative racists. This is pre-Nixon and his Southern Strategy

bionicjoey ,

Yeah I totally agree. Just thought it's an interesting point considering this community doesn't normally have such old cartoons posted

Can AI automate the process of buying gf?

Everyone on the fediverse is a bot except you

Was fully expecting the girl to call the boy a blockhead

This reminds me of the guy who submitted a PR to the GitHub mirror of the kernel "minifying" the code for greater efficiency.

bionicjoey ,

It's nothing really. Heathcliff is a trash comic. The "jokes" are barely jokes. Maybe 1 in 20 get so much as an exhale out of me, let alone actual laughter.

bionicjoey ,

At its core its as bad as china's grasp on a lot of markets.

The government should be allowed to regulate markets as much as necessary to protect citizens from the dangers of capitalism. Laissez-Faire doesn't work.

bionicjoey ,

I agree, but part of the issue is also that this app is operating in bad faith with local laws, so trying to regulate their behaviour is an uphill battle. They just ignore fines or find ways of hiding their bad behaviour better. Obviously they aren't the only ones that do so, but I'm not going to complain about one shitty company getting what's coming to them.

bionicjoey ,

I'd love to see it, but as I said, I don't like letting perfect be the enemy of good. Banning Tiktok is a good thing IMO. I'm not going to complain that it shouldn't be done just because there is more work to do.

bionicjoey ,

I've seen lots of attempts to market on Lemmy. Most get called out as spam and shut down quickly, but there's also exhalting of YouTubers and other influencers who in turn shill stuff like crazy.

Also the gaming subs are really bad for this because posting trailers and announcements about games seems to be viewed by some as a way of "padding" Lemmy with content, so as to make it not feel so empty here. If you ask me, we should welcome the emptiness, only posting about things we actually want to talk about. People who post dozens of game trailers, announcements, and patch notes are just flooding the feeds with things that may matter to nobody.

That's the secret: in India, there's no such thing as being underpaid

They go together though. Like what's scary about the surveillance is how much censorship there is. Because it would be dead easy to arrest someone for thought crime if you are constantly surveiling them.

You could also replace the text body of the post with an explanation. It currently just says "what the hell?" which isn't helpful

Now I turned myself into a pickle. Funniest shit I've ever seen

    bionicjoey ,

Samsung basically owns South Korea right? Could this just be them exercising their control over the government?

    bionicjoey ,

People who have paid off their student loans are allegedly opposed to the government forgiving student loans for people that are financially burdened by them.

Google's motto used to be "don't be evil"

    Companies can change.

    bionicjoey ,

That's a code of conduct. It used to be their motto

    bionicjoey ,

The modularity makes it easier for them to grow slowly and incrementally. Slow and manageable growth is the key for a business to not overextend themselves to the point they get snapped up by the competition

Lucas used to be really good at "tell, don't show"

Who is this Han Solo guy? Why, he's the guy who can do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs!

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I've enjoyed Mark Rober's videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn't sitting right with me...

    bionicjoey ,

I always assumed they were brothers, idk why

    bionicjoey ,

I'm sure it's been implied by some joke they've made in one of their videos, but yeah fair enough that they look nothing alike.

    bionicjoey ,

There's a difference between showing off a technological marvel like a nuclear submarine and not really focusing on its applications as a weapon, versus showing off a weapon and being like "it's so cool to kill 'bad guys' with this stuff"

And yeah he probably hasn't been shy about it, I don't watch his videos religiously. I found out during his excellent talk on the Artemis program. IIRC, he mentioned he helped design missile countermeasures, which is pretty tame as military industrial complex goes, but it's still participating in the amelioration of killing machines, which doesn't sit right with me. And he talked about it so nonchalantly, like he hadn't considered that the people at the end of the barrel of the weapons he was helping design obviously were the "bad guys"

I still have a ton of respect for the guy and his educational outreach work, and I don't hold it against him, I just don't get how someone could sleep at night knowing that they helped make weapons more efficient at killing people.

    bionicjoey ,

Damn, never saw that. At least the general was forthcoming about why they do that sort of outreach.

I know he mentioned being from the Balkans in the video where he interviews the American gun nut.

Safest way of using WeChat on Android?

I live in Canada. My girlfriend is Chinese (also living in Canada), and while we are able to communicate via SMS, her mobile carrier isn't the best, and so there have often been issues for us with regular texting. She expressed a strong preference to use WeChat, at least as a backup option for when texting fails us. While I...

    bionicjoey OP , (edited )

Yeah I ended up installing it in an Android work profile using Shelter, and it is a disaster of an app. I expected a lot more of a professional looking app given how popular the WeChat service is and how big of a company Tencent is, but it's like a shittier WhatsApp. It's not even localized properly, a bunch of strings in the app (like error screens and stuff) are in Chinese, and the English is poorly translated. The mechanism to reply to someone's message is unclear (it's not just long pressing or dragging on a message like in other apps), and you can't send a reaction emoji to a message.
