Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

Goes to show the true state of the art for AI right now

To be fair, there was a time before Discord. People once used MSN, Skype, Teamspeak, IRC, etc.

They shouldn't get too comfortable with the idea that people won't just up and leave.

bionicjoey ,

I didn't get past the sign in page because I was having too much fun looking at all of the localization options for their website.

The default is "🇺🇸 English (Simplified)", but they have "☠️Pirate", "Toki Pona", "🥹Bottom", "😸OwO", "🪄 Enchantment Table", and many other funny options.

Which to me shows why enshittification is so closely tied to austerity and economic downturn. For example I have a buddy who bought Discord Nitro whenever he could. But he recently got laid off and of course that was the first monthly expense he cut.

bionicjoey ,

Weapons manufacturers are constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to murder people. I can definitely hold that against them despite the fact that it is simply technological advancement.

Content creators won't follow because there isn't any monetary incentive to do so

Look up Nebula

bionicjoey ,

My understanding is this: The model of Nebula is basically like a co-op. Everyone gets paid according to the views they get. And the higher Nebula's total monthly revenue, the more each view is worth.

Why not if you're a parent who thinks smartphones are bad, don't give one to your kid? No reason for a law here.

bionicjoey ,

I'm amazed this is even controversial. My parents didn't get me my first cellphone until I was in the 8th grade, and it was a flip phone. I didn't get my first smartphone until the 10th grade, and it was a Blackberry. My first Android wasn't until I was almost finished highschool. And I turned out just fine.

bionicjoey ,

You can already put parental restrictions on a smartphone

bionicjoey ,

If hiring JB to cheer them up doesn't work, they're already dead.

Yeah agreed. Unless there is a pattern of shittiness from the employer, it's probably best to handle this diplomatically and firmly.

    bionicjoey ,

In addition to what Hello_There said, (which I think is good advice), try to find a paper trail that supports your version of events. If there are emails still in your inbox from that incident which show how things truly went down, you should try to dig them up.

I don't recall The Wire ever showing someone innocent getting wiretapped. They always need a judge to sign off that there is probable cause for every single wiretap they get. It's even a plot point a few times that they aren't sure how to prove probable cause for a particular SIM card. Obviously there's the question of whether or not drug trafficking should be illegal, but you have to accept the premise that the characters in the show are fighting the war on drugs.

    Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

option to hide your personal data until you approve a future employer

I think this is impossible in a fediverse context. Data is either shared publicly or only shared with your home instance's admins. There's no other sharing model as far as I know.

    bionicjoey ,

My understanding is that Activitypub federation and that sort of privacy are somewhat incompatible. Because someone could always just create a new instance and then federate the stuff you don't want shared with them.

If I tried to make an illegal move 20% of the time, would you also say I am good at chess?

    bionicjoey ,

Okay. What if the circumstance is because I'm just recalling a bunch of chess puzzle solutions I've seen before and regurgitating the one I think is the correct solution for this particular pizzle without really understanding the rules of chess?

It doesn't matter if the CEO was an engineer or not in a previous life. The job of a CEO doesn't change and he did exactly what he was supposed to do: made shortsighted decisions that maximised profit and took the fall for it when the short-sightedness of those decisions blew up in their faces.

    bionicjoey ,

That doesn't change what I said. He did exactly what all boards expect their CEOs to do nowadays. No board of directors expects their CEO to have actual product knowledge.

    bionicjoey ,

I'm not talking about history. I'm talking about the climate of capitalism in America right now

    bionicjoey ,

I gotta say, I only became aware of Cory in the last year or so (around when the first Reddit exodus to Lemmy happened), but I'm consistently impressed by how based he is.

    bionicjoey ,

Reminder that VLC is on F-Droid

    bionicjoey ,

What exactly is the issue preventing them from updating the Android version?

Also, if that's the case, it sounds like "App stores were a mistake" is a bit misleading, since the particular app store isnt the problem.

    bionicjoey ,

While I have no interest, I appreciate the attempt to segregate business news out of other communities

    bionicjoey ,

Nothing wrong with being a communist. Being a tankie on the other hand... Fuck them

    bionicjoey ,

Unfortunately executive power tends to coalesce in a single person whenever an emergency situation occurs. Rome tried rule by committee like what you're describing but gradually slid into dictatorship because of various forces that are basically just human nature.

    bionicjoey ,

Most platforms lead people to more of what they already believe. If you watch one video from the wrong YouTuber, your entire feed will be nothing but neoconservatives.

    bionicjoey ,

Lol you should move to an instance that doesn't treat you like a child, and has admins that aren't too dumb to know about the Penistone problem.

    bionicjoey ,

I appreciate TH not parroting Huang's nonsense in their headlines. He's clearly just trying to get attention by saying outlandish things

    bionicjoey ,

It's tragic for the people of his country that they are being essentially forced into participating in a pyramid scheme

    bionicjoey ,

I thought we were some with blockchain techbroism and had moved on to LLM techbroism. Did nobody inform Iceland?

    bionicjoey ,

I'm amazed there are still people out there who consider blockchain a positive buzzword.

    bionicjoey ,

Because there have yet to be any valuable applications of blockchain. It's an interesting idea in computer science theory, but you can't do hardly anything useful with it in the real world.

    bionicjoey ,

    China isn't communist.

    bionicjoey ,

This reminds me of a famous quote from Karl Marx:

"If you call yourself a communist, you must be a communist"

    bionicjoey ,

I think your problem is assuming that just because a revolution is led by a person who purports to be communist, therefore the new regime established by that person must also be communist, even after almost a hundred years of political evolution. Just because they put "The People's X" on everything doesn't mean that any of it is actually operating in a way which upholds any of the ideals of communism as described by Marx.

China is an authoritarian capitalist oligarchy. There's some state intervention for welfare, but honestly not that much more than a country like the US (eg. both have for-profit healthcare, both have a pretty jingoist/exploitative attitude toward other countries, both have a prison-industrial complex, both have rampant wealth inequality).

    bionicjoey ,

In my city, that specific kind of asshole is someone with multiple DUIs, since they can still legally ride an E-bike

    bionicjoey ,

Why would streaming make it anymore valid? If he enjoyed it, who cares if it was a waste of time?

Amazon's Hidden Chatbot Recommends Nazi Books and Lies About Amazon Working Conditions (www.404media.co)

An Amazon chatbot that’s supposed to surface useful information from customer reviews of specific products will also recommend a variety of racist books, lie about working conditions at Amazon, and write a cover letter for a job application with entirely made up work experience when asked, 404 Media has found.

    bionicjoey ,

It's funny that this one does both at once. It lies about Amazon working conditions, meaning it probably has been censored in some way, but at the same time it is recommending Nazi books. Really shows Amazon's priorities when it comes to censorship.

    bionicjoey ,

    I'm not most people

    bionicjoey ,

Honestly I might dispute your assertion that "most people" are doing anything different. IME, people are generally pretty disorganized.

    bionicjoey ,

Interesting that setting your location to the UK gets you EU protections. Do the EU protections apply in the UK? They Brexited didn't they?
