I’m a male, 23 yo software developer. Admin of lemy.lol instance.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a substitute and that’s a problem?

Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the .

That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.

Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?

Why fork though? You can still create an instance with strict rules and karma requirements (with help of new plugin system?).

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I guess the new plugin system is capable for those features but unfortunately I have to reject. I already have some hobby projects in mind but I don’t even have time for them because of my job.

Is it just Kbin, or does every fediverse service have the issue of being totally swarmed with bots advertising illegal pharmaceuticals? Is this just the result of limited moderation?

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It’s just Kbin and I hate it 🙂 Kbin has 10x more spam than Lemmy due to poor moderation.

Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I don't think XMPP is simpler than Matrix. With my insufficient knowledge; XMPP servers and clients have different standards. Some supports audio/video calls, some requires encryption while other maybe not etc.

Matrix has a standard set of features and all software around it built for those features. TBH I find Matrix pretty instable lately tho.

@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Yes, you can shoot me from there and you're right but I don't see much difference between Matrix clients. The experience is pretty common between them. Synapse is de facto standard.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

“Ubuntu added on top” you mean Snap? No thanks :)

You've picked a nice name :) I'm glad you didn't choose fedipedia.

I just created an account on open.ibis.wiki and created "Lemmy" article but it's not shown on ibis.wiki 🤔 I guess it still has a long way to go, but I think it's a nice project 👍

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Nice. I guess "Summary" is something like git commit message. I thought it more as the summary of the article :)

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Nice post but hard to read. How about using tables?

head 1 head 2
body 1 body 2

like this:

| head 1 | head 2 |
| --- | --- |
| body 1 | body 2 |

Edit: are we sure the data is correct? For example; Lemmy.ml has 16 communities over 10k. Which are linux, memes, asklemmy, technology, worldnews, privacy, opensource, gaming, fediverse, unixporn, linux_gaming, reddit, science, lemmy, selfhost, jerboa.

I don't understand those who criticize Lemmy developers. They were developing it while you were not here, I don't think they will stop just because you are leaving :)

For it to be donationware, you must not be able to use it without donating.

iso OP , (edited )

yes, those.

I have no problem with "pay what you can". I just hate "you must donate X amount to use this software". If I need to donate, then it is not donate. It is payment.

You need to pass host header. But if you really want to hide your IP, you need to proxy your outgoing activities too.

A new internet is forming (& Meta wants to control it) (yewtu.be)

A federated internet is forming. It's built on open protocols like ActivityPub & connects services like Mastodon, Threads, Pixelfed, Tumblr, Wordpress and more into a connected network known as the fediverse. And everyone from tech enthusiasts to Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey seem to want in.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Literally this. Right now you can’t create your own mail server because big corpos like Google, Microsoft is going to make you end up in spam folder.

Now, apply this to fediverse.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

You can technically create but you can never be sure that your mails will received.

They don’t usurp the service but make it uncomfortable/unstable to you.

iso , (edited )
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It is about power. If they have more than 50% of the users, then all other instances should comply with their changes and obey them. If they don’t, then they’ll be blocked by more than half of the users. No instance owner will take this risk.

I’m trying to explain you that you don’t really need to own something to own it. If you have enough power, you have it already.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I’ve never used XMPP. Can someone compare it with Matrix?

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I've used Matrix for months and agree with most points. I would like to try XMPP but it is clear that it does not have the best onboarding experience.

The problem I've observed with XMPP as an outsider is the lack of a standard. Each server or client has its own supported features and I'm not sure which one to choose.

Which client would you recommend?

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Thank you for the suggestions. I just created an account on jabber.hot-chilli.net and downloaded Gajim. It looks really cool!

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

You need to search them to make them available to your instance. You can also use lemmony or lemmy community seeder to automate it if you care enough.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It wasn't but now it does I guess. I just searched a community didn't existed locally on my instance and I got same result as you. No votes, no comments. I think this is enough to open an issue in the Lemmy repo.

Should I move to Docker?

I'm a retired Unix admin. It was my job from the early '90s until the mid '10s. I've kept somewhat current ever since by running various machines at home. So far I've managed to avoid using Docker at home even though I have a decent understanding of how it works - I stopped being a sysadmin in the mid '10s, I still worked for...

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It just making things easier and cleaner. When you remove a container, you know there is no leftover except mounted volumes. I like it.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Nice test! I’m a Tailscale user and I liked it being faster than others. I don’t care about memory usage but curious why there is a big gap 🤔 Like its using 20x more memory than Zerotier.
