Nothing could possibly go wrong open sourcing a missle rocket guidance system...

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

VMWare workstation is now free for Linux!!!!

Just run windows 10 LTSB!

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, nothing beats the Adobe suite for doing creative stuff. I really wish they offered CC on Linux.

Yeah... GIMP is a joke compared to Photoshop, just find a copy of CS6 😉

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I really wanted to like GIMP. I'm a huge Debian / Ubuntu fan and love OSX as well. Like for dev work, Linux is amazing, best tool for that job hands down.

I might try DaVinci resolve, cause running Premiere in a VM, I don't think will work well.

And yeah, the Linux community can be super elitist unfortunately, nerds that gatekeep their niche...

Like, when did a operating system become a core personality trait? Folks treat it like a sports team. 🤔

I get flack for liking Ubuntu and Mac 😑

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Same, just use FolderSync to get photos to it. Works like a cham.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

What the fuck is wrong with you... No... Don't you dishonor my house like that...

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

It... Depends...
Also, you picked the wrong platform to argue against Linux on 😅

Which RSS aggregator do you use? I cannot seem to find one that works for me.

I cannot stand google news any more, too much spam, clickbait and advertisement. So I decided to try to selfhost an RSS aggregator to make myself a news feed that I would be comfortable with. Being RSS such an "ancient" thing I thought there will be many mature systems, but I'm not sure that's the case.....

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I've looked at other options as well over they years. I just ended up with Inoreader. You get 150 feeds for free and the interface is amazing. Also works with a ton of different apps.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, neat. Been wanting to add all my peeps on Flickr to it. I'm curious how their "magic" option works. Also might be able to do neat stuff w their API.

eBay and look for used Dell servers. I'd go for a Dell R2x0 series for a starter box. Maybe a used Dell Workstation if you want a tower.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

My man!!! I forget about this site!

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

You need Waterfox! It has that functionality. Your title bar becomes a tab bar.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I have MATE setup to look like OSX. Beach ball go BRRR.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Matrix is nice and Mattermost is basically self hosted Slack. Probably better off with Matrix, if you don't need voice. Mattermost I'd you do. Rocket chat seems nice as well.
I'd probably run Matrix and Mumble?

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, for business I use both and Slack is quite nice to work with. Everyone forgets the hidden cost of running your own chat server. It's fine for a hobby, but I'd always have a larger company run critical back end services. They have the time and the money to invest in keeping things working when it matters most.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Neat! I'll check it out!

@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Most of the .world Linux users are chill... Folks from other servers, hit or miss...

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

NGL sometimes you can only find the software you want as a snap, it sucks, but it's the price you pay for not using Windows or Mac. At the end of the day, it's Windows 11, OSX or Ubuntu for most folks outside of Lemmy. I really want to swap to Mint w Debian, but they don't have support for MATE out of the box. Maybe in a year or two. Hoping 24.04 LTS works well.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

PopOS seems neat, I like their window manager alot.

I've never met a HR person I liked. The best I could feel twords then was quiet toleration... Now Ops folks, those people busy their asses to keep the ship from sinking.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Go hang out with GoLang, it's fast too AND easy.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I literally learned it over a one week vacation. The only other language that comes close to being that easy to learn is Python. I often tell folks, if C and Python had a baby, it would be GoLang.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure why your getting down voted, I wish I could switch, but only X works reliability.

I tried their mail app, it's Electron garbage.
I love all their other stuff tho.

TBH KeepassXC + SyncThing is superior in every way.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Have you used KeepassXC or BitWarden? Just curious.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, nice! Yeah, I have a seperate KeepassXC on my work Mac, so the ones on my Linux desktop never touch. I do sync my general Obsidian notebook back and forth which is nice. Client specific notes stay seperate due to NDA's. It's easier having to seperate devices with a KVM.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

They did! I switched to Monarch, it's REALLY nice. They even have a feature tracker for ones they are working on AFAIK.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Man, might swap to Debian 12, trying it on my netbook, it's nice.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I just wish they had it w MATE

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I get newer packages on my netbook then my desktop running u Ubuntu 22.04.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Office is a cloud application, didn't you get memo?😵

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Aside from the snaps being annoying, it's really not bad and works with any hardware you throw at it.

TBH, some software unfortunately is ONLY available via snaps... I'm looking at you Telegram and TradingView...

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

It is. I think it's just a Lemmy thing. All the folks I know use Ubuntu or Mac TBH. Debain is also nice too.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Docker on Windows... That's some scary shit.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I've used XFCE for old netbooks, it always felt like it was too bare bones. But TBH it's prob the lightest thing that doesn't look like garbage.

Cinnamon always felt like it was too fancy for me, but I get that it's great for most folks.

TBH if your using either Debian or Ubuntu, changing your DM is a much easier thing to flip flop on. Nixos always worries me for gaming.
