Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

Maybe just get a large monitor? Its probably cheaper too

First of all you'll be really happy with all those babies when you turn 80 and society hasn't fallen because the average age is 70.

Second, when childcare is free more people can join the workforce, this increases taxes and productivity.

But maybe the most important it will make society more equal. When you're poor working almost doesn't make sense if you have to spend 80% of your salary on childcare. So more people don't work, these people are usually women. That really doesn't help with an equal society, because a big group can't really work so they can't really climb any ladders.

camelbeard ,

Yeah it's like saying if you support free software, you support companies to not pay taxes or companies putting nicotine in products.

I don't really visit reddit anymore, but still end up there sometimes because of a google search. Anyway there is an extension for Firefox Android to always show old Reddit. So you don't have to log in or install the app.

camelbeard ,

No problem the chemicals and heat will fix that

I was thinking the same, this looks well organized compared to how my wife does it, she even puts silverware on the top rack instead of in that little basket, or glasses drink side up (instead of upside down). I have talked to her about it so many times but she is incapable of doing a better job somehow (and she's a smart, thats what really irritates me).

Is your wife also incapable of seperating trash?

Musk probably said something like they used a revolutionary new type of stainless steel, designed for spaceX rockets. Have you ever seen rust in space? No because it's that revolutionary, and we all know space is filled with water and oxygen.

camelbeard ,

No but I am looking for a new laptop and this time I'll definitely spent more time checking Linux compatibility.

My previous thinkpad worked fine out of the box, but my current laptop is an HP Omen, that I mostly selected for the price to performance ratio. But I immediately learned that Linux compatibility sucked. Like not being able to boot an Ubuntu usb drive (without messing with the boot parameters).

camelbeard ,

I'm used to K&R so no real need to switch, also my IDE by default formats in that style. Allman also looks fine, most of the others just seem to make code less readable.

I pay for a plugin so I can use Thunderbird with the exchange server (and 2FA) my office has. Best purchase in a long time, I think it's like a dollar a month or something, pretty cheap.

camelbeard ,

One thing I like is that it runs on Linux, so outlook isn't an option for me anyway.

I tried other mail clients but most of them don't work with exchange servers (and 2FA)

camelbeard ,

There's an addon that can do it and remember the setting per domain or website.

camelbeard ,

Is this like Franz ? I used that for a while, was pretty good actually.

I now use the unofficial teams client, it works ok for me.

camelbeard ,

Do you think I'm using teams because I want to use teams??

camelbeard ,

Awesome I was on my phone so I couldn't quickly check what addon I was using.

camelbeard ,

You will probably be mentioned in history with Hitler and Stalin.

camelbeard ,

I have an nvidia card and don't game, that Intel might be the better option.

camelbeard OP ,

Yeah I should have known, started the thing at 12:26 (actually know this because I called my wife to check if we had 3 hours and 38 minutes before we needed to go), its 17:18 and I just got the door open....

camelbeard OP ,

Very good reply, just one thing to add, it's both a washer and dryer, we did a full wash dry cycle.

camelbeard OP ,

I think it was 17:18 when the door lock finally opened. The very first time estimate said it should be ready at 16:10. So it was definitely a big lie.

camelbeard ,

With the way the world is going, maybe it's better to keep the military around for a while.

camelbeard ,

I kind of really dislike the notion that you only use Linux because you are too poor for Apple.

I don't use Apple because I don't like to be stuck in a walled garden where a company decides what's best for me.

I know it's just a meme, but I think too many people actually think Linux is somehow inferior to Apple (MacOS) while I think it's the other way around.

camelbeard ,

Do we really want to be bigger anyway? I kind of like where Linux as a desktop isn't really big enough for all the scammers and malware makers to care.

(And I know it's huge for servers and malware also targets that, but they are usually maintained by professionals, not your parents that would probably run every shell script they are offered as help)

If Linux would become the biggest desktop os you are going to find so much more bad advice whenever searching for help online. I wonder if the nice people we have now are really ready for when the terrible people invade the community.

camelbeard ,

I don't really think a country, where half of the population support a terrorist group, that recently performed one of the worst attacks on innocent people the world has seen in a long time, really has the right to claim any moral high ground.
