WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, etc. It's hardly the end, the market has just been gobbled up by the big players as usual

macrocephalic ,

It's so much so that every news article that quotes it still says "X, formerly Twitter".

macrocephalic ,

All future AI will have autocorrect errors and will look like no one read it before hitting enter. You're welcome.

I still remember mine too. I wonder what useful information I could remember if I didn't remember shit like this?

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees (arstechnica.com)

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company's return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

Which companies pay for WFH expenses? I worked for the biggest software company in the world in 2022 and there was no WFH allowance. We were 100% WFH at that point.

I use a 55" 4k TV. The screen real estate is great.

I have young kids and recently learned what Roblox actually is. My kids will never be allowed to spend a cent on that. I am happy to buy them suitable games.

The US rolled our democratically elected government in the 70s and we still lick their boots to this day. You'd be forgiven for thinking I was talking about a country in the third world, but I'm talking about Australia.

This is more like someone offering a "brand new method of personal travel" to replace your car, but it turns out that it's just an old Honda with only one seat, a fuel tank that only holds 10L, and a custom navigation app. There's nothing it does that your Honda can't do better, and you won't want to replace your Honda with this.

What's your problem with smart dildos?

macrocephalic ,

They should have just kept incrementally upgrading W10. People don't like big changes and there's not much encouraging people to 11 except 10 going EOL.

macrocephalic ,

Yes, Toyota is using these announcements to dissuade customers from going electric while they continue to sell only ice and hybrid vehicles. Remember that Toyota came out with the Prius 20 years ago and have done nothing since.

macrocephalic ,

Shouldn't he resign based on this criterion?

macrocephalic ,

I'm sure there are people, but I think you'd be surprised how few there are. The vast majority of people make long trips very infrequently - to the point that most could hire a car or find some other means for those situations.

macrocephalic ,

Given the number of other issues in the post I'm going to guess it was hurried and autocorrected wrong. Happens to me all the time.

Except David; he keeps leaving a big blue box in the lounge room.

If only the phone operating system allowed you to load applications from somewhere other than the official app store. Someone should make a phone that does that.

macrocephalic ,

My phone was manufactured in 2022, cost under USD250, and has 8gb of ram. New phones generally come with 12gb or more.

For Mac I use ARC browser. It's a bit different in UI than most browsers but it does some things I really like. It's heavily optimised for keyboard commands, and it has separate "spaces" which you can create and define (e.g. personal, work, etc).

macrocephalic ,

Arc has really changed the way I expect a desktop browser to work now. It's kind of annoying when I go back to Firefox on my PC now.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

Also cigarettes in Australia. They're not banned, obviously, they're just taxed so high that hardly anyone smokes them anymore. I'm probably a bit sheltered, but I'm genuinely surprised when I see someone smoking an actual cigarette now.

macrocephalic ,

If you try to buy alcohol in Dan Murphys with kids then you'll get the third degree. If they're teenage kids then they won't sell to you. Meanwhile if I order online it gets delivered to my door and my postie just leaves it there.

macrocephalic ,

In a true dichotomy they are the far better option. Unfortunately they were/are attracting new smokers. The rate of teenage smoking had been plummeting for decades and was only at a couple of percent - until vapes became popular and reversed about two decades of progress.

macrocephalic ,

What did Geppetto do to you?!

macrocephalic ,

Yeah, when I need one I buy one from eBay for about $8. Sure it's probably a bulk licence that's been setup on a stolen credit card, but in all my years of doing this I've never had one of these licences revoked.

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying (www.wired.com)

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying::Reddit says it wants to reward users by letting them buy into the company’s public listing. Some say it’s too risky—others say they won’t pay a company they’ve already given hours of free labor to.

macrocephalic ,

Exactly. It might be that the content they own (that we have them) is worth enough for them to be profitable, but I'm not going to put money down now based on something that might happen later. They're not a startup, they've been operating nearly 20 years!

I have over 100k comment karma (and much less post) and got an invite. It's meaningless anyway as I am not a US citizen.

Where do you think his seed money came from?

I bet they're taking pre-orders with a deposit though

macrocephalic ,

USD25K would buy you a sports spec Hyundai hatch, or a low spec 2wd SUV in Australia.

macrocephalic ,

Yeah I've been keeping an eye on old beaters just to drop my kids to school and a 20yo Volvo SUV is as cheap as a 20yo Mazda.

macrocephalic ,

Well it is a Japanese car, and they drive on the left side in Japan

macrocephalic ,

I also live in Australia and I think you're forgetting what 99% of vehicles are used for. I can't even remember the last time I was more than 50km from a fuel station.
